Chapter 554: Distrust ( 1 )
After all, they were born and had spent most of their lives there. Now that they were forced to move to another city, they didn’t know if they would be able to find a good place to stay.
“Ah Jiang, will we be able to find a good place to stay?” an old man asked worriedly.
Noticing his grandfather’s expression, Ah Jiang said, “Grandpa, don’t worry. A few days ago, I received a radio signal. Although it only lasted for a minute, it was a clear message from Gusu City. As long as we go there, we can join the Base.”
When they heard this, the family members finally heaved a sigh of relief.
Due to their hometown being far from the city, they didn’t receive news about the Capital and were still hoping for the government to send people to rescue them.
Even though no one came after so many months, they didn’t lose hope. They believed that as long as they went to the survivor Base, they would be accepted.
Meanwhile, a similar situation happened in other nuclear power plants located elsewhere. The explosions killed not only the survivors but also a large group of zombies.
Because of the radiation leak, the first wave of survivor migration had started. Right now, no one realized the consequences this matter would cause in the future.
In the afternoon, the news about Pei Yijun’s team being disbanded spread across the Jiangning City Base. When the guards and staff members heard the news, they were surprised. After all, his team was one of the elite mercenary teams at their Base.
Without his team collecting supplies and clearing zombies and Mutants, it would be hard for them to meet the daily demand for food and expand the safe area of the Base.
Inside the Commander’s office, Pei Xun read the report and was lost in his thoughts. As his fingers tapped the armrest, the corner of his lips lifted. After a moment, he picked up the phone and made a call.
“Commander, what’s your order?” a man’s voice came from the phone.
“What did Yijun do after he came back?” Pei Xun asked.
“Young Master didn’t go anywhere and just stayed in his house.”
Hearing this, Pei Xun asked again, “How is his mood?”
The man hesitated for a moment before he reported, “It’s not good. Young Master is currently drinking without even eating.”
The moment he heard this, the suspicions in Pei Xun’s heart were lifted. He nodded and said, “Keep an eye on him. Don’t let him drink too much.”
“Understood.”
After he hung up the call, Pei Xun made another call. The call was picked up on the third ring, and an old, hoarse voice was heard from the other side.
“Hello.”
“Brother, it’s me, Pei Xun.”
“Why did you call me?”
“Brother, Subject Eighty-Eight can’t be found. The Eleventh Elder said that he wanted to take Yijun to the Facility as the replacement,” Pei Xun said.
Hearing this, Pei Gan was angry and said, “That brat dares to target my Pei family’s heir? It seems that he forgot his identity after sitting on the Elder seat for a few years.”
“Brother, do you have any way to solve this matter?” Pei Xun asked.
“What are you worrying about? With me here, no one can touch our family’s heir. Isn’t it just a test subject? I have several replacements in my lab.”
After hearing this, Pei Xun heaved a sigh of relief and said, “Then I will leave this matter to you, Brother.”
“Ah Xun, although I can resolve the matter about Subject Eighty-Eight, your promotion this time might be off the table,” Pei Gan reminded him.
“Brother, it’s okay. I plan to train Yijun personally. I might not have time to handle the Elder’s responsibility.”
When he heard this, Pei Gan asked, “Are you sure about this? Didn’t you say that he is not mature enough and needs more tempering?”
“Well, he got his power and now lost it. I think now is the right time to tell him about the organization. When he takes over the Patriarch position, he has to deal with those old foxes. It’s better to train him from now on.”
“How about his ability?” Pei Gan asked again.
“Although he is only twenty-two years old, his lightning ability is already at level two. What’s more, it’s a high-grade ability. His potential is unlimited. With our grooming, he might be able to sit in the First Elder position in the future.”
Pei Gan went silent for a moment before he said, “Since you already made up your mind, then we will do as you said. Yijun is too stubborn and prideful. It won’t be easy to put him under control.”
“Brother, you don’t have to worry about this matter. I’m his father, and he has to listen to me,” Pei Xun replied confidently.
“Mhmm. If there is nothing else, then I will hang up.”
“Okay.”
After the call was hung up, Pei Gan turned to the Mutant tied on the operating table. He glanced at his assistant and said, “Continue.”
At the desolate Land of Snow, a metal door hidden behind a boulder buzzed open, and a group of people wearing hazmat suits walked out while pushing several carts.
They walked for twenty minutes before they pushed the Mutants’ corpses on the carts into a huge pit.
A huge fire was burning at the bottom of the pit. The moment the Mutants’ corpses touched the fire, they were ignited. After taking care of the corpses, the group of people returned, and the metal gate was closed.
At the same time, in the Lin’an City Base, Feng Xiu and Rong Qinyu were having their meal in the cafeteria when they saw one of the Vice Commanders of the Yunshan City Base.
Raising her hand, Feng Xiu called out, “Weiyi!”
The next moment, a woman turned around and met her gaze. She quickly patted the man beside her and said, “Lin Que, help me buy my dinner. I will go over first.”
Lin Que looked in the direction pointed out by her and nodded. “Go ahead.”
