Chapter 456: Second Phase Ability Awakening ( 2 )
Even though Li Yang was facing the zombies in close combat, there were walls built by the metal-type ability-users to block the zombies. With only a one-meter-wide opening, only two or three zombies could pass through.
No matter how fast the zombies moved, with several ability-users fighting in the front and a group of guards standing on the gate killing the zombies that managed to bypass the front-line fighters, none of the zombies were able to enter the gate.
“Grrhhh!!”
In the midst of the low-level zombies attacking the gate, a growling sound echoed in the area. Compared to the zombies’ roar, this sound was more like the growling of wild beasts.
Before Li Yang could react, a black, massive dog suddenly leaped from behind the zombie and lunged at him from the side.
Seeing this, Chu Zhimiao’s eyes flickered as she shouted, “Li Yang, be careful!”
Crash!
“Ugh!”
Li Yang let out a grunt as his left arm was bitten by the dog. As the dog’s sharp teeth pierced his skin, he felt as if his arm was injected with cold water.
Duagh!
The next moment, he grabbed the dog’s head, pulled it off his arm, and kicked it away. As his flesh was torn, warm blood flowed from his arm and dropped to the ground.
Using his palm to cover his wound, he endured the pain and returned to the base. As soon as he retreated, several ability-users went forward to take his place.
Chu Zhimiao noticed his wound and rushed over to check on him. Noticing that even his bone was visible, she said, “Li Yang, let’s go to the infirmary.”
Feeling that his arm had started to become numb and stiff, he shook his head and said, “Something is wrong with my wound. Don’t go to the infirmary, let’s go back to my place.”
Hearing this, Chu Zhimiao glanced at his wound and saw black veins starting to spread around it. Seeing this, her face turned pale as she said, “Li Yang, you…”
“Miaomiao, tie me up,” Li Yang said before he fainted suddenly.
Before he fell to the ground, Chu Zhimiao reached out and held onto him. Fearing that he might die from blood loss, she quickly carried him on her back and ran back to his place.
Ten minutes later, they finally arrived at a small house located in a narrow alley. Taking out a set of keys, she opened the door and entered the house with familiarity.
The moment she entered the house, she closed the door and placed him on the small bed. After she locked the door, she went to get a rope and tied him up.
Only after she was sure that he wouldn’t be able to move freely did she go to find a first aid kit box and tend to his wound. Seeing the flesh around the wound starting to rot, her eyes reddened and tears threatened to fall.
When she was done, she held onto his cold hand and muttered, “Li Yang, you better hold on and not give up. If you turn into a zombie, I will kill you.”
Due to her anxiety, she didn’t notice that her hand clasping Li Yang’s hand emitted a soft blue light as her energy seeped into his body, helping him fight the zombie virus inside.
As the night deepened, the zombie horde continued attacking the bases.
When the red moon hung in the sky, Li Yang’s body twitched as his eyes turned gray. His nails grew longer and a low growl escaped his throat.
“Grrhhh…”
Hearing this, tears slipped from the corner of Chu Zhimiao’s eyes. Even when the sharp nails almost pierced her hand, she still refused to let go of his hand and said, “Li Yang, don’t give up. Please wake up…”
Similar situations happened everywhere. But their fates were worse than Li Yang’s. The moment the wounded showed signs of mutation, they were killed by the guards.
Due to this, the morale of the guards and ability-users defending the wall hit rock bottom. Some people even sneaked into the warehouse and military barracks to steal supplies and weapons before escaping from the base.
When the report reached Pei Xun, lots of supplies, five military choppers, and dozens of weapons were stolen and several groups of ability-users and survivors had already escaped.
After he read the document, he threw the folder at his subordinate and shouted, “Useless! You can’t even handle this small matter, what is the use of having you alive?!”
The folder hit the man’s forehead and blood seeped from the wound, but he kept his head lowered, saying nothing.
Only after Pei Xun calmed down did he open his lips and say, “Commander, there are trackers on the choppers. From the direction they go, we are sure that their destination is the Lin’an City Base.”
The moment he heard this, Pei Xun narrowed his eyes and said, “Xun Che’s base?”
The man nodded and replied, “From the information gathered by our spies, the Lin’an City Base was managed by Xun Che and his men. But the one providing the supplies, tools, and weapons is Jin Xuyan and his team.”
Hearing the familiar name, Pei Xun tapped his fingers on the desk and said, “Keep an eye on Jin Xuyan and his team. They might be useful one day.”
The man nodded and said, “Understood.”
After he picked up the folder and placed it on the desk, he gave him a salute and left the office.
Thirty minutes later, he walked into a narrow, dark alley, took out his satellite phone, and dialed a number. Not long after, the call connected and Jin Xuyan’s voice came from the receiver, “Hello.”
“Captain, it’s me,” the man said.
“How’s the situation in the Jiangning City Base?” Jin Xuyan asked.
“The situation is not promising, but we are still able to hold on for another week. But Pei Xun has his eyes on our team.”
Hearing the report, Jin Xuyan went silent for a moment before he said, “He won’t do anything to us, but he might be suspicious of you by now. Find a way to retreat after the zombie horde passes.”
“Understood,” the man replied and hung up the call.
