Chapter 684: I Have Potential?
I kicked the Zwerger rushing at me with a knife before I slashed him into two with my halberd, his corpse dropping onto the floor with a loud thud.
I looked around the rest of the street as the other Mercs were engaged in their own firefight with the remainder of the rebels, gunning down the ones that still chose to fight.
We’re not here for extermination so if any rebel threw down their weapons and surrendered, we would take them as prisoners of war and hand them over to the Zwerger military.
Honestly, if it wasn’t because of the fact that they were also paying us a bounty for the captured Zwergers, most of the Mercs would have just shot them anyway even if they surrendered.
Although… It does seem like most of them don’t even want to surrender, which I suspect it’s either because of pride or because of what might happen to them if they surrendered to the military.
Either way, for us, we’ll show mercy to those that surrendered and no mercy to those that don’t.
Right now, the rebels are down to their last legs and we were basically cleaning up the remnants that were still around the station.
Since the fighting had died down, I figured that our work here was essentially done so I decided to just pull us back from the fighting to head back to the ship.
After all, our ship wasn’t even properly docked with the station yet and we still need to retrieve the spacesuits we have stashed in that maintenance room.
I could leave the rest of the cleanup to the other Mercs since there were a number of them who were still trying to earn Credits from hunting down the rebels, especially those Mercs who ended up being pinned down earlier and weren’t making a single Credit while pinned down.
Hey, Mercs are people driven by Credits after all so it’s easy to understand them.
We made our way back to our ship and the first thing I did after the airlock closed behind us was turn to Amber.
“Alright. Talk. What are you keeping from me?”
She grimaced, “I was hoping you’d forget that…”
“You were acting really out of place, it was hard to forget.”
“Unn… Well… I’m not the best person to explain it so could we get Mara instead?”
I frowned, “What does Mara have to do with this?”
She opened her mouth to answer but Mara’s voice came from behind me, “It’s alright, Captain. Let me explain.”
I spun around to see my doctor standing there with her doctor’s coat which told me this was something serious.
Ries was also there with her but my catgirl looked more confused than I was so she must have been dragged here by Mara without being told why.
I’m guessing Renata wasn’t told to come because I’m already wearing her or because her other bodies were occupied with the ship at the moment, since we were currently moving towards one of the station’s docking arms.
Yumiko pointed at herself, “Should we… Give you some privacy?”
Mara shook her head, “This also involves all of you which is why I got Ries here as well, so stay for now.”
I looked between Amber and Mara wondering what this was about. They… Aren’t planning to tell me that they intend to leave the crew, are they? Because if they are, I think I will be quite devastated…
Mara sighed, “I suppose it would be the most efficient if I were to just say it directly to you, Captain. We believe that you have Psionic potential.”
There was silence as everyone processed what she just said, including myself.
It took me a moment to realise what she meant before I responded with the most eloquent answer I could after hearing what she said.
“What?”
“You have Psionic potential, Captain. In other words, you are able to be a Psionic.”
“What?” I repeated myself.
Amber popped up from my side, “It means you can move things with your mind, Tera!”
I coughed, “No, I didn’t just forget what a Psionic is. I’m just still in disbelief of what Mara just revealed. How could I be a Psionic?”
Mara shook her head, “You’re not a Psionic, Captain. You just have Psionic potential.”
“What’s the difference?”
“Someone with Psionic potential does not mean they would become a Psionic. It depends on how big your Psionic potential is. If it’s really low, you won’t even be considered a Psionic.”
“Oh… So… Err… How low is my Psionic potential?”
“Very, very, very, very… High.”
“Huh? Wait… Didn’t you just say that I’m not a Psionic? If I have really high Psionic potential then…”
“That’s because it’s so high that I don’t even know if what you are is a Psionic anymore, Captain. I have not seen readings this high like… Ever.”
I blinked at her, “Eh? Wait… Does that mean you already had an idea of this before today? You already scanned me for this?”
She nodded, “I have, Captain.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“Because back then I wasn’t sure what I was detecting when I was scanning you. There was a lot of Psionic energy when I scanned you but I don’t know if it came directly from you or it was just hanging on you because of other reasons.”
“Hanging on me? How?”
Mara tilted her head at me, “You are sleeping with two Psionics every night. Not to brag but one of them is a really powerful telepath and the other is an Elemental Psionic who is way stronger than normal Psionics. Not to mention the fact that you also have an entity that you are literally wearing that also has Psionic energy.”
Ahh… Well, when you put it that way… I guess that makes sense.
“So if someone hangs around Psionics, they would also show up positive in Psionic scans or something?”
“It is a possibility.”
Hmm…
“So… What does this mean? You’ve confirmed that the Psionic energy or whatever came from me right?” I asked.
She nodded, “Yes. I am sure that at least some of the Psionic potential that was picked up by the scans definitely came from within you instead of hanging around you. And… Can I see the weapon that the Zwerger smith made for you?”
I didn’t ask why and took it out to hand it over to her.
She reached out her hand but didn’t try to grab it, meaning she was trying to use her telekinesis to try and lift it.
But… Nothing happened.
The box just stayed in my palm even after she was holding her arm out towards the box for at least a minute.
I gave her a look to ask what she was trying to do and she shook her head, “This is more serious than I thought… Captain, this confirms it, you really are a Psionic.”
I looked down at the box, “I don’t understand? How does this prove it?”
“You have your own Psionic energy wrapped around the box that is preventing me from even trying to pull it to me. The weapon has bonded to you.”
“Eh? What? Wait… What does that mean? The weapon has bonded to me?”
“That weapon is made of a material that has a special property that can retain Psionic energy allowing a Psionic to pour their Psionic energy into it to prevent other Psionics from affecting it. I believe the Zwerger smith somehow managed to realise that you were a Psionic and specifically used this material for you.”
“Wait, wait, wait… You’re telling me that Franz knows that I’m a Psionic?”
“He most likely had his own scanners that told him you had Psionic potential as well and guessed that you were a Psionic.”
“Ok… So… Does that mean I could move things with my mind? Isn’t that really cool?!”
Mara raised her hand, “I will have to stop you there, Captain. I will have to warn you that I am recommending you against trying to use any Psionic abilities right now.”
“Eh?! Why? I want to learn how to throw stuff with my mind too! Wait… Is this because I would get the attention of Nobles or something? I will be careful!”
She shook her head before bringing up her personal terminal to show me a screen.
There were two bars that stretched from the left to right with the one above only a quarter in size compared to the second bar.
“The one above was the Psionic energy you had when I last scanned you before today. The one below is what my scanners picked up when you walked through that airlock earlier and it’s still increasing. At this point, I believe your body is trying to adapt to that sudden increase of Psionic energy and if you do not contain it, it might be really bad for you and everyone around you. For now, I would have to suggest that I put you on some suppressants first to manage how fast it’s growing.”
Ah… Ok, that’s not good…
But still… I never thought that I would find out that I’m a Psionic today…
Captain’s Log:
Oh wow, so you’re telling me I can also potentiall move stuff with my mind?
Amber’s Log:
Mnn~ Tera being a Psionic… So hot~
Mara’s Log:
Captain’s Psionic energies are quite literally off the charts… This could be really good or really bad.
