Chapter 681: We’re Here For Your Ship Buster
Alright… If I were a rebel, where would I put the controls to the guns on this station?
Hmm…. Probably somewhere that is close to the guns itself?
We already know the giant gun at the top of the station was something that was installed after they had taken over the station.
Which meant that it was a new addition to the station and I doubt they would be able to reroute the controls for the gun somewhere deep inside the station since they had to get it up and running as quickly as possible.
That would mean the controls for it would most likely be close to the gun itself.
“We’ll need to get to the top of the station,” I decided.
Yumiko pointed to the side, “The sign there says the stairs and the elevators are over there, Mistress.”
Well, that’s very helpful, let’s start from there then.
We followed the sign and found our way up easily enough since this was technically the maintenance part of the station so we didn’t have to worry about moving through the main streets where most of the guards would be stationed.
Fortunately for us, the other Mercs should be making a lot of noise and drawing their attention right now so we should be free to head directly to the weapon’s control room.
No doubt those Mercs were aiming to earn more Credits by hunting down as many of the rebels as they could.
We waited patiently until the elevator came and we filed inside it before I pressed the button to bring us to the top floor.
I had to collapse my halberd back to its box shape since the elevator wasn’t big enough to accommodate its full length.
When the door closed, I realised that Amber had been pretty quiet all this time which was rather unusual of her.
When I turned to look, I realised she was busy typing something into her personal terminal which was definitely weird.
“Amber? Is something wrong?” I called out to her.
She jumped and turned to me, “Eh? What? What’s wrong? What happened?”
“You just seemed to be distracted and we’re in the middle of enemy territory right now?”
She quickly put her personal terminal away and gave me an innocent smile, “Ehehe~ Sorry, sorry! I had to send a message to Mara to let her know how we’re doing!”
That’s odd… Why would she need to update her through a text message? And why would she need to be updated on it anyway?
Even if she needed to know, Renata could be the one doing the updates anyway since she has a copy of herself there.
I narrowed my eyes at her, “Is there something you’re not telling me?”
She opened her mouth before she snapped it shut, as though she thought about lying for a moment but stopped herself at the last moment.
She let out a sigh and it looked like she was going to start explaining when a ding came from the elevator indicating that we had reached our floor.
The doors slid open and we found ourselves staring at a bunch of Zwergers outside, all of them frozen in place when they found us standing inside the lift.
At a quick glance, it looks like we got the place because I could see what appeared to be a section of the ship buster cannon poking through from the ceiling with several Zwergers crowding around it as though waiting to fire it.
The other Zwergers seemed to be busy trying to fortify the position and were caught by surprise when we appeared here.
“We’ll talk later,” I told her, right before I charged in and assembled my halberd to slash at the closest Zwerger.
His dying screams seemed to wake up the rest of the room as they hurriedly fumbled with their weapons to try and retaliate.
Lea and Amber immediately rushed out from the elevator to start shooting at them while Yumiko joined me in the melee, her figure already disappearing into a bunch of afterimages as Zwergers were cut down left and right.
I had to take this fight more seriously as a few of the Zwergers were using energy weapons which would be a problem for Renata to deal with.
Thankfully, the energy projectiles are slower than their ballistic counterparts so I was able to just deflect them with my halberd.
Some of them I even managed to deflect the projectiles back to the shooters themselves.
I heard a yell coming from the side and I peeked at the side to see a Zwerger charging at me while firing his shotgun at me.
He was using a ballistic type shotgun so all the pellets were being eaten up by Renata.
I’m guessing he already tried shooting at me from a distance but that was not effective so he thought coming closer would somehow solve that problem.
One of the Zwergers tried to shoot at me with their energy rifle again so I angled my halberd and deflected the projectile towards the charging Zwerger instead.
The shot would have nailed him on the head but a shield materialised in front of him, absorbing the energy before it could reach him.
Huh… No wonder he wasn’t afraid to just charge at me like that.
But well… Still a bad choice for him.
I spun my halberd in his direction and the energy in the blade dissipated to transform back into a normal blade, the axe cutting past his shield and slicing through his neck to decapitate him.
His head went flying and the headless corpse continued for two more steps before it collapsed onto the floor, his head bouncing onto the ground a second later.
Before my halberd had completed its swing, I had turned on the energy blades on it again, just in time to smack against another energy projectile aimed at me to deflect it back to my shooter and nailing him in the chest.
“How is this human still alive?!!” One of the Zwergers cried out, still firing his rifle at me.
“She must have some kind of shield on her!! Just keep shooting at her until the shield breaks!”
“I think I know now! Her shield protects her against projectiles but not melee attacks! Just attack her with melee weapons!!”
As though those words lit up a figurative lightbulb in their heads as a few of them immediately discarded their guns and started running towards me with an assortment of tools in their hands.
I’m talking about pipes, hammers and a few knives scattered in there.
Really? Do you not see that I have a halberd in my hands right now? Do you really think that you stand a chance trying to rush at me with those kinds of weapons?
Well, I’m not going to complain if they were going to serve themselves up like that.
I swung my halberd behind me and concentrated for a moment to charge up the energy in the halberd.
As they converged towards me, I swung it back in front of me and sent an energy blade flying towards them.
None of them managed to react to it before the blade slashed through them, cutting all of them down like a hot knife through butter.
Only four of them managed to survive as they weren’t close enough to the larger group that I targeted.
They watched the bodies of their decapitated comrades topple to the floor and… Decided that their best course of action was to continue charging at me.
Seriously? Are all of them just dumb or have the survival instincts of a dead fish?
I was going to slash at them to finish them off but an after image appeared above them for a moment before it disappeared.
A split second later, the remaining attackers were sliced up into pieces and collapsed into diced up pieces.
Eww… Did you really have to slice them up like that, Yumiko? That feels a little too excessive…
The Zwergers were now down to the last few who were hiding nearest to the gun’s controls so if we took them out, it would clear the room.
“Why won’t these fuckers die?!! What are you waiting for?! Hurry up and call for backup!!”
I turned in the direction of the voice just in time to see another Zwerger near him pull up his personal terminal.
As he started to tap on it, a gunshot came from the direction of the elevator and his head was blown open by a sniper shot, courtesy of Lea.
Amber then rushed towards the last few Zwergers that had opted to duck behind cover and leapt up into the air above them, spinning through the air so that she was looking at them upside down before firing her dual pistols at them.
She then landed on her feet with a flourish and the room that had suddenly been filled with gunfire became absolutely silent.
Well… Now that the room was clear, we’re free to make use of the big gun to target the real money maker of this entire operation.
Hello Rebel Cruiser~ How nice of you to be in firing range of this big gun we have here!
I wonder how much the pay would be for taking down an E Class ship?
Captain’s Log:
Step aside rebels, we’re firing this baby~
Amber’s Log:
Ugh… I should let Mara know about this…
