Chapter 635: You Don’t Get To Run, Suit Guy
I kicked down the doors, my weapons raised and ready to fire.
Almost immediately, flashes of gunfire came from the front and my shield materialised to protect me from them.
Seems like they had also intentionally turned off the lights just to limit my vision I guess…
I did not need to make sure my aim was precise and just pointed my arms in the general direction of where the gunfire was coming from before I started shooting.
The number of flashes quickly decreased as several of them fell from my hail of bullets, right as my HUD switched to thermal vision without any prompting from me.
Thanks Renata, you’re the best.
I aimed at the largest group of thugs and fired a mortar round, blowing the entire group up before I finished the rest with quick bursts from my shotgun and minigun.
It didn’t take long before the entire place went quiet again, but there was one problem…
I turned on the lights and changed the view back to normal before I started scanning the room.
Sure enough, I do not see that suit guy anywhere…
There was, however, another door at the far end of this hall so I assume that the suit guy had gone through that door already.
It might even be the secret escape route that Renata had told me about.
In that case… I went over to the door and grabbed it by the handle to try and open it, only to find that it was locked shut.
Well, that wasn’t a problem because I just put more strength into my grip and yanked the door off its hinges before tossing it aside.
When I shone the light at the area behind the door, I couldn’t help but frown.
The door led to a staircase leading down into a tunnel that was obviously below the ground level of the station.
The reason why I was frowning wasn’t because I found the escape tunnel but because the space to get into the tunnel was not big enough for my Power Armour to squeeze into.
So unless I intend to start enlarging the tunnel, there’s no way I’m getting this through there.
And seeing that I don’t see the tunnel being blocked… Either Amber hasn’t collapsed the tunnel yet or she got the wrong tunnel.
Either way, I wasn’t going to wait around and risk this bastard escaping so I guess I have no choice…
I walked the Power Armour to the side before opening the back up and climbing out of it.
Learning from the previous experience where I was forced out of the Power Armour, I had Ries make an additional compartment that I could use to store my shotgun and ammo in case I meet a situation where I need to proceed without it again.
Sure, Renata assured me it won’t be hacked again but I thought that there might be other instances that would prevent me from using it. An instance like this one for example.
Renata’s voice came from within the Power Armour, “Daddy? Are you sure about this? It could be dangerous…”
“It would be troublesome if this guy manages to run away. We don’t have a way to track him and I don’t want to stay here longer than we need to since Feng might also make some trouble for us if he knew we sold to both sides. I’ll have to take care of him as soon as I can.”
“Maybe wait for the others, Daddy?”
“It’s fine. I have fought without the Power Armour at the start and only started using it recently. I should be able to take care of a few thugs even without it. You can control the Power Armour as well, right? Help me keep watch, will you?”
“Mnnn… Okies, Daddy…”
Somehow, I could still feel that she was extremely reluctant about it but she still obeyed me.
Still, I couldn’t let this guy escape so I had to do this.
I made sure my shotgun was properly loaded and my personal shield was active before I descended the stairs. There was no need for any light since the tunnel had strings of light at regular intervals to illuminate this hidden passage.
Damn… Did this guy really manage to escape? Amber said that she would collapse the tunnel and I believe she would be able to do that easily so… Where is she?
Actually… How would she even collapse the tunnel anyway?
Well… No use thinking about it now so let’s just focus on trying to catch up to that–
“What the fuck are you doing?!”
I quickly raised up my shotgun, expecting someone to suddenly appear and shoot at me.
But then nothing happened and I realised the voice was not directed at me but came from somewhere up ahead around a bend in the tunnel.
I crept towards the bend and the same voice continued shouting, “You’re telling me we’re not getting through?! What do I even pay all of you for?! The one thing that this is supposed to do and you guys can’t even make sure it’s usable?!”
I stuck myself as close to the wall as possible as I snuck closer towards the voice.
“Boss… This… This is not natural… We maintain the tunnels every other day, there’s no–”
“I don’t want to hear excuses!! Get this out of the way right now or we’re all dead! And I’ll make sure to kill you first before that!!”
Moving closer, I finally got to see that it was actually the suit guy shouting at some of his men that were trying to move a pile of rubble that had blocked the way ahead.
It actually looked like a part of the tunnel had been crushed to cause the walls and ceiling to collapse and block it off.
Looks like Amber probably went above ground and used her telekinesis to collapse the tunnel from there.
I didn’t even know she could do that.
But well, this works in my favour.
Doing a quick head count, there were about six thugs and that’s not including the suit guy. Should be doable…
I pulled out my pistol as well and rushed towards the group of thugs.
Most of them were busy trying to move the rubble aside so they didn’t see me coming until one of them happened to look behind as he was placing one of the scraps behind him.
I could see his eyes widening as he realised I was not one of them and he opened his mouth to shout out a warning.
He never got to say anything as I lifted my pistol and fired three shots quickly, just in case he had a personal shield.
Luckily, he did not and all three rounds landed on his chest, the thug letting out a choked gasp before he fell backwards onto the rubble.
I immediately shifted my aim to the next thug and fired another shot as he turned to look at his friend.
The bullet blew through his head before he could even comprehend what had happened.
The third guy spun back around and made a grab for his gun, reacting more to the sound of my gunshots than the sight of his comrades falling.
Unfortunately for him, I was already shooting at him before he managed to point his gun at me, emptying the rest of my mag on him.
I quickly stuck my pistol back in my holster while raising up my shotgun at the same time, firing the first shot at the fourth thug who just managed to raise his rifle before a rain of pellets blasted him back into the wall.
The fifth and sixth guy managed to get off a shot each but my shield flared to life to protect me before I fired another shot at the fifth guy to blow his brains off and rammed my shoulder into the last guy, sending him stumbling back.
I then did a spin kick to knock his gun out of his hands before placing my shotgun barrel at his chest.
He had time to look up at me in fear before I pulled the trigger, blasting his chest open without mercy.
Finally, I turned to the suit guy who was backing away from me, the smile that he had shown me during our trade nowhere to be found.
“Why… Why are you doing this?! We have no quarrel with you! Are you Mercs?! Were you paid to take us out or something?! Tell me who and how much! I’ll pay you double… No, triple! Triple whatever they are paying you just to let me go! You can say that I died! Just let me go!”
I lifted my shotgun to point at him, “Oh no. This is not a job, this was personal.”
“Pe… Personal? I… I didn’t do anything to you!”
Hmph… He doesn’t recognise me since he only saw me when I was wearing my Power Armour huh?
“Really? Then what about the case of energy cells you gave us? Does that not have anything to do with you either?”
His eyes widened, “Wha… What? If… How… How are you still alive then?!”
“That’s what I thought.”
There were no other words that needed to be said.
I pulled the trigger.
Captain’s Log:
No need to hesitate, just pull the trigger.
