Capítulo 2037: Wedding Gift
Villain Ch 2037. Wedding Gift
It came out too loud, a little crooked, the kind of laugh that didn’t know where to land, humor, disbelief, relief, maybe all three. His hand still clutched the small black box. The one Jason had sent. The one he had no idea what to do with.
Then there was a pause between them.
Not awkward. Just… weird. Still. Soft. Like the world had lowered its volume for a second.
Allen looked at the box again. Thumb resting on the edge, unsure if he wanted to open it. Unsure if he should.
Evan stepped closer, voice gentler this time. “Open it, brother. It’s not something shameful. It’s a real wedding gift.”
Allen’s chest rose slowly, and he exhaled through his nose like he was trying to ease a cramp that lived in his heart instead of his ribs. He nodded once. Snapped the box open.
Inside was a watch.
Not fancy.
Not even expensive, from the looks of it. He could tell immediately. The leather was real, but not high-grade. The silver casing had that subtle mass-produced shine, the kind you get in department stores next to the wallets and belts. But it was clean. Classic. Tasteful. Someone had picked it with intention.
Not money.
Intention.
Underneath it, folded neatly, was a single piece of paper. Cream colored. Handwritten.
Allen stared at it for a second before he slipped the watch aside and opened the letter.
His breath slowed as his eyes scanned the page.
He thought he knew what it might say. Maybe something like “I was wrong” or “Sorry I never gave you a chance” or maybe even “I didn’t know how to be a father, and I failed”. Things that hurt, but still mattered. Words that might have felt like bricks pulled off his chest, even if they were too late.
But it wasn’t any of that.
Jason had written
Good thing you found your happiness.
I hope you live well and don’t look back.
We will live well without you.
That was it.
Three lines.
Neat. Direct. Simple.
Allen blinked.
His jaw twitched once, like his body was still waiting for a reaction to come.
But nothing came.
No heat. No sharp inhale. No crack of a heartstring pulled too tight.
Just quiet.
He stood there, in the middle of the most extravagant wedding he’d ever witnessed, surrounded by crystal glasses and music soft enough to feel like silk in the air, and all he could do was stare at a letter that confirmed what he already knew.
Jason hadn’t changed.
Jason had, in his own twisted way, just given Allen permission to disappear.
Allen folded the letter again. Neatly. Precisely. He moved like he wasn’t even thinking. Just… preserving muscle memory.
Evan looked nervous now. “Are you… going to throw it away?”
Allen shook his head. “No.”
He closed the box softly, the latch clicking into place like the end of a sentence.
Then he held the watch out.
“To you.”
Evan blinked. “Wait. You’re giving it back?”
“I’m not keeping it.”
“You’re refusing it?”
“I’m accepting it,” Allen said, raising the letter slightly. “This. This alone is enough.”
Evan didn’t say anything right away. Just looked at him, eyes searching his face for something. A sign of anger. Sadness. Bitterness.
But Allen’s expression was unreadable.
Evan lowered his voice. “Don’t be mad.”
Allen turned toward him, slow. His gaze was calm. Not cold. Just… quiet.
“I’m not,” he said.
A pause. His lips pressed into a thin line.
“I’m not mad,” he said again, softer this time. “It’s just… after everything that happened. After all those years. I feel like I don’t care anymore.”
The honesty dropped between them like a stone in a lake. No drama. Just ripples.
“I don’t want to keep something that reminds me of the past,” Allen continued, voice low. “Of them.”
Evan nodded slowly, hands now curled around the box. “I get it.”
Allen didn’t look at him. Just looked past him. The crowd. The laughter bubbling under the music. The smell of roast duck and floral perfume and sweet wine all drifting through the air like something out of a painting.
His eyes found Shea talking softly with Vivian, their gowns brushing like whispers.
Jane stood near the garden fountain, hands clasped behind her back as she spoke to someone’s grandfather with perfect posture.
Mila was sipping wine beside Bella and Alice, all of them laughing like sisters.
Larissa stood near the dancers, holding her chin high like a warrior queen watching her territory.
Azura was seated at the edge of the dance floor, ankles crossed, biting into a strawberry with elegance.
They were his now.
His world.
His future.
Not Carla. Not Jason. Not the ghosts of who raised him.
Allen exhaled again. Longer this time.
“It was a decent watch,” he said finally.
“Yeah,” Evan replied. “He picked it himself.”
Allen snorted faintly. “You sure?”
“I saw the receipt. He didn’t ask Carla. He didn’t ask me. He went and bought it.”
“Wow,” Allen said. “That’s new.”
“Yeah.”
Allen let silence settle again. This one didn’t feel weird. It felt like a quiet acceptance of a truth they both understood.
“You think he meant it?” Allen asked.
Evan looked down. “About living well without you?”
“Yeah.”
Evan hesitated. “I think… It’s what he can say. The best way he can show anything without ripping his pride in half.”
Allen let that sink in. It made sense. Didn’t make it better. But made it… make sense.
“So this is closure?” he muttered.
“Looks like it.”
Allen nodded. Just once. “Alright.”
“Alright?”
“I’ll take it.”
Evan smiled softly. “Still proud of you.”
Allen gave him a look. “Even after I returned the gift?”
“Especially after. You didn’t punch anyone. That’s character development.”
Allen chuckled. Then glanced down at his suit, brushing invisible dust from his cuff.
“Now go,” Evan added, nudging him lightly. “You’ve got nine wives to kiss before dessert.”
“Not happening.”
“Oh it’s happening.”
Allen smirked. “Tell Gerry to stop crying. He looks like he’s sending his kids off to war.”
“He’s already planning a family dinner. God help us all.”
Allen rolled his eyes.
Then turned back toward the reception, tucking the folded letter into his inner coat pocket.
Not to carry it.
Just to keep it safe until he was ready to burn it.
Because some goodbyes don’t need fire.
They just need to be read.
Then left behind.
