Villain Ch 2033. Perfect Family Portrait [Part 3]
Jason looked at her like he didn’t quite believe her. Like part of him still waited for betrayal to bloom from her mouth.
But she met his gaze. Steady. Unflinching.
“I’m not going,” she said again. “But Evan is.”
Jason’s mouth twisted. “And what? He’s going to stand there all proud? Like we didn’t raise him better?”
“No,” she said. “He’s going to stand there because we didn’t raise him better.”
That one hit.
Jason looked away.
Carla dried her hands and set the towel on the hook by the sink. The light above them hummed softly, flickering for half a second before settling again.
She turned to leave.
“Jason,” she said, pausing by the doorway.
He looked up.
“You don’t have to forgive Allen,” she said. “But don’t punish Evan for wanting to.”
Jason stared at the counter.
The dish towel was crumpled in his hand.
The smell of meat pie still lingered in the kitchen, thick and fading, like memories that refused to leave even when the plates were clean.
The light above the sink hummed. Soft. Constant. Casting that yellow, almost golden hue that made the soap suds glow like little halos in the dish rack. Carla had stepped back to wipe the water off her arms, her expression unreadable now. Quiet. Not cold, just… tired in a way that had nothing to do with dishes or years.
Jason let out a slow breath. Set the towel down beside the sink. The air between them wasn’t angry anymore. It was… still.
“Fine,” he said.
She turned to him.
“I’ll give him the chance,” Jason continued, voice low. “I’ll pretend I don’t know about this.”
For a moment, she didn’t move. Didn’t speak.
Then Carla smiled.
Not forced. Not polite. But something soft and real.
She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around him. Held him like he was her anchor in a storm she’d been braving alone for too long.
“Thank you,” she whispered into his shoulder.
Jason hesitated just a second before letting the sponge fall from his hand into the sink. His arms came around her… rough, calloused hands against the familiar fabric of her apron.
“No,” he murmured. “Thank you.”
He held her tighter. One hand cradled the back of her head. She smelled like dish soap and pie and that faint trace of lavender that always clung to her laundry detergent. It grounded him.
“Thank you for choosing me,” he whispered. “And staying. Even after you found out your mistake wasn’t a mistake.”
Carla froze just a little in his arms.
Jason’s voice dropped. “That he’s a billionaire. That you had the chance for something else. More. Maybe everything. But you didn’t leave.”
His throat tightened. “You chose me. Over him. Over the money.”
She pulled back just enough to look at him. Her eyes were wet, but she wasn’t crying. She brushed his jaw with her thumb, thumbprint warm on his stubbled skin.
“I told you,” she said, “it was a mistake.”
He scoffed lightly. “You sure? Because billionaires don’t usually come from nothing.”
Carla shook her head. “We were drunk, Jason. I didn’t know him. He didn’t know me. We ended up in each other’s arms.”
Jason’s jaw clenched, but he let her keep talking.
“I left because I didn’t want trouble. I didn’t want to be some summer regret that turned into court papers. He was a stranger. Still is.”
Her voice faltered a little. “If I had gone to him… maybe he would’ve given me money. Maybe he would’ve paid for everything. Maybe I would’ve had a mansion, luxury items, and jewels.”
She took a shaky breath. “But I know what I’d be to him.”
Jason didn’t move. His silence was the kind that let her keep going. She appreciated that about him, even if he rarely showed it.
“I’d be the mistake,” she said. “His mistake. Just like I saw him, once. Just like… I saw Allen.”
That name hung heavy in the kitchen. Like a ghost in the steam.
Her voice broke into something smaller. Something less guarded. “I was scared. Jason. I was scared that if I went to him, he’d look at me the way I looked at Allen. Like something to be tolerated. Like a scar.”
Jason didn’t speak. He just reached out, rested a hand gently on her waist.
“So I stayed,” she whispered. “With the one person who never made me feel like that. Who didn’t care about where Allen came from. Who accepted me after everything.”
Her eyes found his again. “You.”
Jason’s face twisted like he was trying not to cry and failing anyway. His mouth opened. Closed. Then opened again.
“I was a damn idiot to hate that boy,” he said quietly. “I know it now. I knew it then too, but hell if I was gonna admit it.”
Carla leaned against him, cheek resting on his chest.
“I know why you were like that,” she murmured. “It wasn’t just jealousy. Or pride. You were scared too.”
Jason kissed her hair. Not out of habit, but because he needed to.
“I kept thinking,” he said, “if you ever saw him again, if Goldborne came back with all that money and power and clean suits and polished words, you’d leave. How could I compete with that?”
“You didn’t have to,” she whispered. “You already won.”
His chest rose with a breath that felt too big for his ribs.
Carla looked up at him. Her fingers traced his shirt. “I never needed perfect. I needed real.”
Jason cupped her face. His hands were rough, but his touch was gentle.
“I wish I’d seen him for what he was. Just a kid. Not a threat. Not a stain.”
“You were protecting me,” she said. “Even when you didn’t know how. Even you blamed Allen as the result.”
He smiled. Crooked. Sad. “I was a bastard.”
“You were mine,” she said.
The kitchen had never been this quiet and this loud at the same time. The warmth of the oven had faded, but it lingered in their bodies. In their breath.
