Chapter 342: Chapter 341: Talking to the people in the warehouse
Even though they were far from the door, Luciel and the others could still see the state of the people inside.
Most of the people inside were skinny, and they didn’t seem to be in very good condition.
When they opened the door, most of the people inside also opened their eyes afterward, probably because of the noise they made and the brightness from outside.
Those people who opened their eyes immediately became vigilant and woke up the others beside them.
Those who were woken up also immediately looked at them, and their eyes were immediately full of wariness.
Those people immediately began holding the weapons near them.
“W-what do you guys want?” a skinny middle-aged man said while holding a bat tightly.
But even though the middle-aged man was holding the bat in his hand, it was very clear that he actually couldn’t do any damage, as he didn’t seem to have enough energy to even hold the bat for long.
They could see that the man’s hands were already shaking, even though he was holding the bat tightly.
The others in the room also had vigilant eyes, and most of them were already holding weapons in their hands. But their faces were too haggard, and they were also too skinny.
All of them looked like they had no strength to actually even swing the weapons they were holding.
“Hello, we mean no harm. We are just here to collect grains from the warehouses here. We had already finished collecting the grains in the other warehouses, and this is the last one we opened. May we know who you guys are and why you’re here?” Yang said.
“I-I see. You guys are here for the grains. Then, you guys can just take them, but please leave something for us to eat. We are only relying on flour and water to survive, so please leave some for us.”
“Of course, since you guys are already here, we will certainly leave some for you. But why are you guys staying here? Why don’t you go to other places for a better chance of survival?”
When those people heard that they wouldn’t be getting all the flour in the warehouse, it was obvious they were all relieved, and their vigilance against them decreased a bit.
The middle-aged man also became willing to answer Yang’s question.
“Of course, we wanted to leave here too, but we couldn’t get out at all because of the number of zombies outside.
We were all people living nearby. In the beginning, we were scared to go out because of the sudden appearance of the zombies.
We only dared to go out after we ran out of supplies. At first, we still found a lot of food and managed to get by.
We also killed some zombies when we ran into them, and it wasn’t that difficult at first.
However, the sudden heavy rain, the extreme winter, and other things that happened made it difficult to find food anymore, because most of it was washed away or destroyed.
The number of zombies also continued to increase, as they were coming out of the city, and the zombies were getting stronger and stronger.
There were also animals like dogs and rats that suddenly became stronger and more aggressive, some of them even turning into zombies.
They were getting more and more, and now they’re already too many and too strong for us to deal with. So, we can only choose to hide here.”
“Why didn’t you guys get away from here when you still had a chance at the beginning?” Yang asked.
The middle-aged man had already mentioned that they had been going out to look for food in the beginning.
They had been brave enough to go out, so it was really questionable why they hadn’t gone farther away from the start, knowing they were still near the city and that their area already had a lot of zombies because of the large population.
It seemed very reasonable for them to leave their area and head to less populated places, just like many others did. However, they were still staying near the city and hadn’t moved away yet.
When Yang asked his question, Luciel, who was still looking at the people inside the warehouse, could clearly see the anger and disappointment on their faces.
“We didn’t go far away because we joined with a lot of people in the nearby community.
Some people who had awakened their abilities and were strong were leading the group in collecting supplies and killing zombies.
Even though we had to leave some supplies we collected for them, we were still getting by and surviving.
Others had also suggested moving away, but those in charge weren’t willing to leave.
We’re just ordinary people, and we didn’t know if we could survive out there with so many zombies, so in the end, we chose to stay in the community with them.
However, two months ago, some people from somewhere else came to our community.
They were clearly stronger than the people in our group, but they were also very violent.
As soon as they arrived, they immediately fought and subdued those who could resist.
Anyone who tried to resist them was terribly punished. They also raised the stakes on what they would get when going out to look for supplies.
But as long as we didn’t offend them or disobey their commands, we were still safe, so we just endured it.”
After staying here for a month, they also offered to take us with them, but as compensation, all of us would become their servants, and all the girls would be taken by them.
If it was just being servants, we could still endure it since we’d only be working for others, but at least we’d survive.
However, we couldn’t offer them our wives and daughters, so none of us agreed to go with them.
There were some who didn’t have any girls with them, and most of them were willing to follow.
A lot of people went with them because they were indeed strong enough to kill a lot of zombies.
Some of the girls who were also willing to go, and some who were forced by their families, went with them.
Those of us who weren’t willing to go with them all dispersed, trying to find ways to survive on our own.
They took all the supplies we had collected, so we had no choice but to leave and look for another place to find food and other things.
But something seemed to have happened to the city, as a lot of zombies suddenly started flooding out.
We weren’t strong enough to go anywhere, so our group was unfortunately trapped here.”
No wonder more than half of the people inside the warehouse were women.
Those people were probably family members or part of the women who weren’t willing to go with the group the middle-aged man had mentioned.
It seemed that they had been living in the warehouse for a long time, as they had become too skinny and looked like they hadn’t eaten anything decent for a while, as they were all gaunt and haggard.
They probably hadn’t eaten their fill either, as they didn’t seem to have enough energy to do much of anything anymore.
“I understand. But you guys look too haggard, even though you’re in a warehouse with a lot of food. By the way, how come you’re in here? Didn’t the other people come here?”
“This place is closer to the city than the community we were living in. No one comes to this place, even though they know there are some warehouses here, because there are a lot of zombies in this area.
No one mentioned this place to the strong people who just arrived.
Even those who were willing to go with them didn’t say anything because they knew those people might use them just to get supplies from here.
They all knew that they would be the ones who were likely to die if those strong people became interested in this place.
So, those strong people didn’t know about this place and just left with the others.
As for us, we only came here because we had no choice. We were just looking for food, but suddenly a lot more zombies appeared, and we ran here unknowingly.
We were lucky to have come close to these warehouses, so we’re still alive. However, we couldn’t go anywhere else anymore because of the number of zombies outside.
As for why we’re in the state we are, even though there’s plenty of flour here, it’s because we couldn’t eat it properly.
We’ve already run out of gas and fire sources to cook with, and there’s nothing else we can use to start a fire.
Luckily, we still have someone with water abilities, so we’ve just been mixing the flour with water for food.
That’s all we’ve been eating. We also couldn’t move around much because the zombies outside would hear us. So, of course, we’re in such a bad state.”
