Chapter 459: Everything At Once

Though I had completed my mission, I didn’t inform my handler/guardian. Instead, until he came searching for me, I planned to make use of this time to figure out the truth behind the Roanoak conspiracy. Fortunately for me, I have found a strong lead vetting all files in this branch of C.I.B.

The lead was none other than a newly awakened curse master, Ace Lander. He, despite his meritorious record, was entangled in many controversies. I didn’t care about the rest but two.

The first was that E.A.D Matthews strongly believed he had broken past the branch’s firewall and infiltrated its mainframe on numerous occasions, accessing sensitive information. But she had no evidence to back her claims.

The second was that the Void-tier Prince McSuile had accused him of meeting and coercing the Overlord’s descendant they had in custody at the secret base Wulfric. But he too didn’t have any evidence to back his claims, like E.A.D. Matthews.

However, Prince retracted his statement later, just a few hours before the McSuile family shared the information on the Roanoak Conspiracy with the C.B.I. and other concerned authorities, earning a huge amount of merit and goodwill from the government.

Clearly, there was something fishy going on here. Therefore, I decided to investigate this Ace Lander character. He had a very impressive track record for a newborn curse master, but his life before that was too boring and depressing, a little cringe even.

Still, I decided to meet him in person to get a better read of him. Therefore, I pulled my rank to speed up the process of approving and creating his and his sister’s curse licences in under an hour. Successfully, bringing him to me, to my home turf. If he stood out as suspicious, I planned to have my assassin droids follow him and learn everything there was to learn about and figure out how he fit into all this. I had to find the mastermind who orchestrated his war and turn the winds my way asap.

…

“What now, Master?” DD asked, surfacing from the underground, fully aware of her master’s worries. What he tried to avoid the most, happened. His enemy knew more about him than he knew about them. This meant they knew all his weaknesses while he didn’t even know how they looked or what their names were or what they wanted from him. Things couldn’t be worse.

“Specroll, eat one of the droids and see if you can find something. Emi, store the other two droids away and take the electric bike out,” I said, planning to head back home on the bike. Choosing to prioritize Specroll digesting the droid and finding clues on our enemy over returning home as fast as possible. Also, I need the ride to clear my head. Too many things were happening at once and I just needed a little peace to let my mind think.

After Specroll ate the droid completely, I fled the scene on my bike, taking directions from DD, who was tracking the orchids in my estate using her abilities. After fifteen minutes or so, I had to stop as Specroll reported his findings using the status screen,

[ —Status Screen—

Specroll: Master, I am sorry. I failed to get any clues because the master of these droids didn’t leave any. They seem to have foreseen a scenario like this occurring and taken precautions against it.

Specroll: Also, they appear to have thoroughly destroyed all the communication devices used to communicate and collect data from the droid. They were very thorough in covering their tracks.

Ace: Congratulations on finally being able to communicate in my native language, Specroll. So, I take it these curse droids were more advanced than any curse tech we stole from the secret base Wulfric.

Specroll: Thank you, Master. And your right, the communication module on this curse droid is indeed far advanced compared to the curse tech I have come across so far. I am afraid your worries are not unfounded.

Ace: To be able to decisively discard three Hero-tier curse droids with advanced curse tech specializing in assassination, our enemy is not only well-funded but ruthless enough to achieve their goal regardless of losses on either side. Now that’s a very difficult enemy to face, especially if we have no idea who it is.

Ace: Alright. I had enough mountain riding for today. Take me home. They should be waiting for us.]

Storing away the electric bike with Emi, I summoned Specroll, who immediately warped me in an exo-armor, taking me to the sky, executing another mid-air takeoff. It seemed to have gotten the hang of it. A few more times and it will perfect it. We were back home safe before I could even finish my thought.

Landing in front of the servant villa, I could hear Janice, at the Lansky manor, shouting at Lilith, “Lil, don’t play around in the dirt, you will get your dress dirty…Didn’t you hear me? I said, stop playing in the mud. Are you doing it purpose just to make me scream.”

The atmosphere was too lively for a funeral. Well, I couldn’t blame them. Except for Dee3 and her animal cyborg, no one actually really here to mourn Mr. Birdie’s death. The funeral to them was more like a get-together to pay respect to the owl hero that saved the day.

It was a miracle that people were willingly coming to this funeral even, considering Agent Berry died on the same mission too. I believe most of them were coming out of respect for Dee3. It has been ten years since she left, but for some reason people still respected her enough to pretend they cared about stupid dead bird.

I never planned to call this many people, but once they heard Dee3 was throwing a funeral for her bird, they shamelessly invited themselves. Matthews and her team actually hurriedly handed in their prison transfer so they could attend the funeral.

Dee3 had no authority in the C.I.B. Or in other government organisations for that matter, but people who worked with her and owe her, her old friends and colleagues, were very high up in the ranks of the C.I.B. and various government organizations. These people knew one word from Dee3 was enough to revitalize their career prospects.

I bet many in the government already got the news that Dee3 was hiding on my estate, but none had the balls to say, “Let’s go and bring our slave back.”
