Capítulo 813: Watching From the Shadows

But what thousands?

More like millions.

And maybe it was for the best that the easily distressed Chief of Staff did not get to hear the internal commentary of one particular Count, who had been very busy and very entertained since early morning.

Count Alexander Taylor was having the time of his life.

He couldn’t recall the last time work had been this enjoyable. Perhaps the closest comparison was when he had foolishly agreed to jointly oversee the security of the Imperial Palace. That had been chaotic. This, however, was art.

He hadn’t seen such a diverse range of attacks all aimed at a single location since he had started working for the Imperial family. But after several years, threats had started coming in neat categories that had become rather predictable and familiar.

This, however, was different.

This was inspired. Or maybe just desperate.

Digital probes. Social infiltration attempts. Credential fishing. Long-range surveillance tests. Some clever. Some laughably bad. Some so bold they might as well have sent letters.

And all of them were aimed at DG.

Then again, it was likely because the people they believed they were targeting were not only young, but also never expected to have security at a level that would be this difficult to crack.

So everyone seemed willing to take them on, and now he had contenders all over the universe.

But maybe best of all, he was able to enjoy every second of it while fulfilling his most permanent responsibility.

Keeping an inconspicuous eye on his child.

Alexander Taylor had been monitoring threats directed at his son since the day he was born. Quietly. Relentlessly. Thousands of incidents had been intercepted over the years without Jax ever realizing they existed.

Which was exactly the point.

He didn’t want their child to grow up under a microscope if he and his wife could help it.

Jax had been allowed to roam freely. To make friends. To choose his interests. To live without being crushed beneath the weight of his family name.

And so far, he had done just that.

Maybe too comfortably, as it turned out.

Because since joining the Royal Military Academy, he had seen a sharp increase in threats.

So who wouldn’t eventually realize that their child was likely involved in something rather interesting?

And it was interesting, alright.

His wife, Jenna, had one fervent hope.

She prayed it wasn’t drugs. Because their son was a little too honest for something like that.

Alexander had not laughed so hard in years.

But how could he blame her for thinking that when Jax always uttered words they couldn’t really comprehend while looking a little too excited every day.

Unfortunately, the truth was worse.

Or better.

But in general, he felt that “interesting” didn’t begin to cover it.

Whatever their son had become involved in was carefully hidden, aggressively shielded, and absurdly well protected. So well protected, in fact, that even Alexander’s usual search led him nowhere.

Then one day, the impossible happened.

His main network came under cyber assault.

“!”

And against all odds, the attack practically succeeded. If someone was trying to capture his attention then they definitely succeeded.

But what do you know? After getting to the bottom of it, he realized it was all related to their son and his friends!

Then came the unusual proposition that he couldn’t possibly reject. Because wasn’t it about time to figure out what their son was up to?

And he did. Or apparently he managed to figure out a part of it as the person who needed to know enough to at least establish the level of security they wanted.

However, this meant he couldn’t exactly tell Jenna what they were up to since he wasn’t one to break confidentiality. Aside from betraying trust, he also understood why that level of security mattered for what they were doing.

It was just a good thing that his wife seemed fast on the uptake.

More importantly, it was great that she didn’t push when she was aware that he didn’t want Jax to experience the level of surveillance he grew up with.

Thankfully, they didn’t have to wait forever to know more.

His wife, who had been busy practically praying for their child anywhere and everywhere finally received an invite to formally attend an event!

And sure enough, it was more interesting than drugs.

The parade alone got them looking at each other. But when they went inside that tunnel with everyone else, he had to grasp his wife’s waist to keep her upright.

Yes. This was why DG kept being attacked.

Because just what was this?

Light poured in from above, soft and warm, slipping through glass and leaves and branches that reached higher than they could see. Green was everywhere. Above their heads. Under their feet. All around them. Trees grew through open floors, water sparkled beneath stone paths, and the air smelled clean and alive and nothing at all like the capital.

Well, it definitely looked great. Actually more than great.

It was just that no one would have expected such a thing anywhere in the known planets save for maybe the virtual world.

And yet, that was what they were seeing. Just right in front of them.

One could have confused it with the wilderness if not for the seating areas and several other people walking and gawking about.

__

Jenna Taylor stopped walking.

She did not mean to. Her feet simply refused to move.

Her hand tightened around Alexander’s sleeve as she stared, eyes wide, taking it all in. The scent alone was enough to make her feel like she had stepped into a dream she was not dressed for.

“What’s this?” she breathed. “How could something so beautiful…”

Her voice trailed off, lost somewhere between the trees and the light and the very unsettling realization that this place was real.

Alexander opened his mouth, about to explain. Or at least to attempt to.

But before he could say a word, an excited voice cut in from the side.

“Yes! I thought so too!”

They both turned.

Luca was standing there, bright-eyed and smiling like someone who had been waiting very patiently for this exact reaction despite being surrounded by one fluttering Duke.

He clasped his hands together, clearly pleased. “It’s amazing, right? I’m really glad you like it. And My Lady,” he added earnestly, turning toward Jenna, “your son did really well with this!”

There was a pause.

A very small pause.

“Huh?” Jenna said.

Her brain visibly attempted to catch up as she slowly turned back to Luca.

“…What?”

The golden-eyed cadet beamed.

It was the pure, radiant smile of someone who believed this was perfectly normal information to share.

Lady Jenna stared at him.

Then she stared at the trees.

Then she stared at the light.

Then she stared at Alexander.

“What?!” she exclaimed, finally finding her voice.

Alexander cleared his throat and looked very carefully at a fern that absolutely did not need his attention.

At least he didn’t randomly say, “Say hello to your grandchild.”

Hello! Sorry I made an error when I dragged chapter 812 over and I only realized late that I missed several paragraphs at the end! I added them now so if the start of 813 doesn’t make sense, it’s likely because the chapter you’re seeing hasn’t been refreshed!

I’m sorry! :<
