Capítulo 768: The Mail Room Riot
Then again, maybe that would not be a good idea, when, aside from facing the wrath of several heavily invested figures, doing so would invite the ire of one unexpected cadet.
Jax.
As in Jackson Taylor, an intensely devoted plant parent who would absolutely be willing to go behind bars for a cabbage head.
Yes, him.
Because said cadet, who had recently been given a renewed purpose in life, was now busy creating his magnum opus with a partially traumatized Theo, who initially didn’t think it would be that bad.
Then again, the young pharmacist still believed he was doing better than Noah, who was currently out there learning how to make swirls with a trembling hand.
How could such a thing even be done?
More than that, how could such a thing be harder than using knives and piloting a mecha?
Noah felt his knees shaking with every attempt, terrified of wasting ingredients. But when the uncertain trainee glanced to his side to see how the others were doing, he was surprised to find a few… creative designs.
He blinked. Then he leaned a little closer.
“That’s a nice flower,” Noah said softly, genuinely meaning it as he looked at Ollie’s mug.
Instead of celebrating, the blonde lifted his trembling chin and stared at Noah with a wobbling lip.
“It’s a star! A star!”
“Oh,” Noah said, eyes widening as he looked at the cup again. Then he turned it a bit. Then the other way. Then upside down.
It still did not look like a star.
He wanted to ask how the star had become possessed, but with Ollie looking like he might explode into tears at any moment, Noah quickly said, “Very artistic… and very imaginative.” His gruff voice turned as gentle as Noah could muster after imagining that he was talking to a cornered bomb.
Ollie sniffled and nodded, accepting this.
Noah slowly turned toward Luca next. Because surely, with that guy’s skills, he was bound to see something interesting, right?
Well, it was definitely interesting.
But just to be safe, he decided to observe first.
After going through so many things in the past few months, he had already figured out how it would be better to learn as fast as possible from his mistakes.
This time, he examined the pattern carefully. It had a bell shape. Smooth. Very smooth. He felt confident this time.
“Luca, how did you make a mushroom?” Noah asked.
The reaction was instant.
Luca looked up at him. Then down at his cup. Then up again. His expression cracked in real time.
“This one… this one is Tortie.”
Noah blinked.
Luca looked demolished. Three attempts, hours of effort, and apparently none of them resembled the guardian tortoise in any known universe.
But before the frazzled Noah could think of something comforting to say, something else caught Luca’s eye.
Noah’s cup.
Inside, sitting proudly on the surface, was a legitimate-looking fern. Symmetrical. Sharp. Alive. It actually looked similar to the material they were using as a reference!
The wilted guild master came back to life.
“You got it!” Luca shouted, abandoning his tragic Tortie to grab Noah’s wrist and show the others.
Within seconds, everyone crowded around him.
They congratulated him. They praised the fern. Someone even clapped him on the back so hard he nearly swallowed his own tongue. Noah tried to smile, but he did not understand what was happening.
Then he noticed Princess Kira’s mug.
There was barely anything left inside it. The foam art had been scraped clean. And her grin was suspicious.
In fact, as he glanced around, it became horrifyingly clear that among all their attempts, his fern was the best.
The best.
His soul shrank in terror.
No. No, no, no. With the looks he was getting and how they were crowding around him, they couldn’t possibly be serious, right?!
They can’t seriously be thinking—
Oh hell no!
He screamed internally, face frozen in twitching horror as everyone continued cheering around him.
But as if to cement the issue, Ollie tugged on his sleeve and whispered, “Noah, do you want to exchange assignments? I can take that, and you can greet the guests. I swear, if I practice for the remaining days, I’d be able to get it.” said the blonde who was confident because he’d once passed that major history exam.
However, Noah paled instantly.
Just imagining having to deal with that many people would drive him crazy.
Absolutely not.
“Fine, fine! I’ll take care of it,” Noah said quickly, clutching his mug like a shield. “I’ll do it!”
Because if not this, then would he be expected to do the even crazier tasks?
__
Xavier, for one, was currently neck-deep in learning and reading Luca’s books while trying to dodge one persistent little princess who was attempting to convince everyone that the imperial family should also be able to visit her brothers’ booth.
It was a crisis, obviously.
Little Nina had been forced to stay back and watch as everyone fought valiantly during the Zone Four deployment.
And now she was being told that while she would definitely be able to visit the booth, the length of her stay would depend entirely on the official schedule.
The horror.
Of course, the rule was meant to show that the Empire was not being partial to anyone. But if it were like that, then would she not miss all the good things she kept seeing in the dungeon space?
But who knew that one little girl’s struggle would echo through the hearts of so many?
Oh. Right. Kyle.
And if there was someone who skillfully orchestrated everyone’s struggles, a portion of the blame could be thrown at him. After all, who in their right mind would think of such a diabolical concept?
An overworked adjutant, that was who.
Still, in the midst of everyone else’s suffering, there would be the blessed few hundred people who were about to be touched by one hell of a golden finger.
Back on Planet Nova, where the soldiers were undergoing a massive debriefing, Marshal Julian casually sauntered up to the podium.
He tapped the mic once.
“Those who participated in the battle at Zone Four,” the Marshal announced, “may proceed to the mail room after this briefing and claim the promised invitations.”
Silence fell with the weight of a small supernova.
People actually stopped breathing for a moment, straining to hear every syllable. No terminal made a sound. Not a boot shifted. The tension was thick enough to collect in buckets.
Up until the Marshal finished speaking, the crowd remained frozen.
The soldiers who were only present to assist in the debriefing blinked in confusion. They exchanged puzzled looks, unable to understand why an entire hall had suddenly turned into statues.
Then the Marshal stepped down from the podium.
And the universe broke open.
The silence shattered.
Every soldier who had been present for the battle at Zone Four launched into motion. Chairs screeched. Equipment toppled. People practically vaulted over one another.
They raced for the mail room as if salvation, enlightenment, and a lifetime’s worth of credit bonuses waited behind its doors.
And among those sprinting with wild determination was a small crew from Zone Four who didn’t just run.
Surprisingly, leading through unscrupulous means was Nia, who used the fact that she was tiny to slip through the crowd and reach the mail room faster.
Sure, anyone watching would think they had all lost their minds, but the moment Nia cracked open her invitation and saw what was inside, she realized she had made the right call. In fact, she should have pushed harder.
Only, what she thought was fast had not been fast enough.
Because when she looked up, searching for someone to drag along, she froze at the sight before her.
Everyone.
Everyone had somehow already paired up.
“Hey! What the hell!” Nia muttered, staring around in betrayal.
Obviously, her elder brother was out there high-fiving her sister-in-law, both overjoyed at being an automatic pair. That was fine. That was expected. They were about to be married, after all.
But right next to her, soldiers were doing the unthinkable.
Pairs formed left and right, some subtle, others painfully obvious. Two soldiers stood awkwardly close, smiling shyly at each other. Another pair kept fumbling with their terminals while stealing glances that could melt a reactor. One more cleared his throat before asking, “So… do you want to go together? For convenience.” His ears were bright red.
They might as well just announce it to the world with how bright their faces looked!
Meanwhile, others were frantically tapping away on their terminals. They were supposed to send quick updates to their families, but no one was doing that. Instead, every message pop-up contained various versions of:
“Are you free that day?”
“Do you want to join me?”
“I really want to go with you.”
“Please answer. Time is running out.”
Confusion erupted from the receivers.
“What? What partner?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Hey! Where are you even?!”
Then suddenly, someone in the corner shouted triumphantly, “Yes! I got it! I got it!”
A wave of realization washed through the mail room.
They could not afford to dilly-dally.
Chaos followed.
People turned rabid. Invitations were clutched like treasure maps. Pairings locked in one after another with suspiciously quick handshakes and far too pleased smiles.
Nia scanned the room, hunting for familiar faces. She spotted Sam and Marco in the corner and made her way over, only to stop when she heard them arguing.
“Don’t you even think about it. We’re signing this in blood,” Sam said seriously.
Marco raised a brow as if daring him. “Just book it, so it’s done.”
Nia stared. “You two are going with each other?”
Sam blinked at her proudly. “Of course. Because like that, won’t we be able to go twice?”
The entire room froze.
The logic hit them like a divine revelation.
Two invites.
Two. Visits.
Everyone who had no particular partner in mind suddenly looked as if they had found the meaning of life.
Eyes sharpened.
Expressions brightened.
A dangerous spark filled the air.
Unfortunately, one of the people whose eyes glinted at the idea happened to be Eden.
She moved fast.
The moment the thought entered her brain, she lunged at one deputy officer and grabbed him by the neck.
The unfortunate man choked, not because he wouldn’t survive it but because he couldn’t believe who had grabbed him.
“!!!”
Was the world ending?
