Capítulo 766: Booth Negotiations
“Sorry, Guild Master Luca, are you sure about that?” asked the bewildered chairman, whose hair had turned white halfway through the meeting.
While he expected an inevitable backlash and probably a rightful thrashing, he had apparently learned that dealing with such people was much harder than dealing with tantrums.
But what exactly had him reacting like this?
Well, maybe because they didn’t expect to be greeted cheerfully, most organizers were actually taken aback by the calmness of the people who actually bothered to introduce themselves.
Adrian had actually thought they were rather humble, since most guilds of their caliber would have gone straight to the point and assumed their name was prestigious enough that everyone already knew who they were.
But that wasn’t the case for these two.
The Chairman cleared his throat the moment the introductions were over. “Young Lords, first of all, I would like to apologize for the last-minute communication. The booth draw has already concluded.”
There was sincerity and unease in the Chairman’s voice, and Adrian felt like he understood why.
After he berated everyone about putting themselves in someone else’s shoes, they had thought about a compromise. Cutting out a chunk of the center stage allocation to open up a new booth space.
Obviously, that once again drew arguments about showing too much favor, but when Chairman Lan asked if they would then be willing to ask the other guilds to give up space, the other members immediately shut up and just grumbled to themselves.
With the location alone, some guilds would be willing to squeeze themselves into a tinier space. So the organizers hoped that with nine members, they might be fine with such an arrangement. Less space meant less need for manpower, right?
“To make up for the situation, we’ve come up with an option. While the booth itself will not be as big as the others, the location is most definitely prime.” He tried smiling as he pointed towards the display where the new intended booth was placed.
They were relatively confident about this because who wouldn’t want such a spot? And yet when they turned to see the reactions of the cadets, they couldn’t help but flinch. It was as if someone had aimed a cannon at them because, before their eyes, the young lad just wilted.
Luca’s shoulders drooped.
And as if on cue, his golden eyes dimmed.
There was an awkward silence.
Then one organizer, in a heroic and exasperated attempt to salvage the situation, piped up with a forced laugh.
“It is so much better than the original one. Look, your previous booth was right there by one of the unused garden exit doors. Compared to that, this spot is an upgrade. And for the new place, we will not even charge the additional expense. Only fifty million guild credits for literally the best location in the exhibition.”
The others turned to him with the exact expressions of people ready to strangle him with a nameplate.
How could he possibly think now was the right time to reveal where they were originally supposed to go?!
Luca, meanwhile, was scandalized. And rather confused.
Fifty million guild credits.
For a tiny rectangle in the middle of what was probably going to be a very noisy hall.
The little money-grubber tried to assess the situation once more, but his brain, with the help of D-29’s whirring, was really not helping make sense of such an expense.
Why would anyone pay that much? Sure, DG had significantly more guild credits than they could possibly use, but even so. That was daylight robbery!
Moreover, how could they charge that much when the original space that was so much better was only for five million guild credits!
Luca had to look at it again; it was tiny when compared to the other booths, yes, but it was out of the way! Not only was it out of the way, but it also had a much nicer price tag! Look at that one entire missing zero! That alone made it all better!
But how come their location was suddenly changed to a more expensive one?
While Luca tried to understand the situation, Kyle quietly assessed everything, watching for cues. He tried to keep track of Luca’s reactions, the officials’ expressions, and the booth projection. Then, unexpectedly, a paper note slipped in front of him. Covertly. Silently.
Kyle blinked.
The note read, “Get back the original one. Luca wants that.”
Kyle lifted his gaze slightly. Luca was staring at the layout projection with grave concentration. While that wasn’t particularly obvious, the experienced adjutant knew better than to dismiss the note written in that distinct handwriting.
With everyone else being that busy, such words could’ve only come from the only person who could correctly interpret the slightest arch of Luca’s brow or the small tremors of his lips.
Definitely from his boss, Xavier Solaris.
While the two communicated through the ancient art of handwritten notes, the rest of the committee was undergoing the fight of their lives.
From their perspective, the young guild leader had started terrorizing them.
Not verbally.
Not even intentionally.
He was simply… looking at the holographic and holographic projection of the Imperial Summit Exhibition Center and reacting.
Which, to them, was worse.
“Oh, so that is where the Silver Serpent members are,” Luca said in a small voice while staring at their highlighted booth.
Several organizers stiffened.
“The Iron Panther and the Gilded Stags ended up next to each other?” he murmured. “Look at how expensive these are.”
His face fell with tragic disbelief. The organizers panicked. They began sweating through their suits.
Then Luca’s eyes drifted to the largest highlighted zone on the map. “Whoa. How come Horizon Traders Guild paid two hundred million credits when Crimson Foxes, right next to them, only paid eighty million credits?”
Silence.
Pure, airless silence.
The officials paled so quickly they looked powdered.
It was clearly obvious to everyone that the innocent-looking cadet had just highlighted the committee’s most embarrassing inconsistency. They had allowed guilds to buy extra spaces before DG even had a chance to pick. Chairman Lan’s eyes narrowed slowly at the officials, who collectively looked away like synchronized criminals.
Selling remaining spots was fine in principle. It happened every year. But only when every guild had gotten their fair choice. The Chairman finally realized he had made a grave mistake in assuming silence meant consent.
And now they were bound to pay for it.
But before he could speak, Kyle Nox stepped forward.
“They probably bought the other extra booth spaces,” Kyle said smoothly. “ISEC is capable of holding at least sixteen times the number of booths present this year. Since mechas may be involved, larger guilds probably wanted display space. Perhaps even wanted more room to display spacecrafts.”
“Oh. Then we can buy more space too, right?” Luca asked brightly, face lighting up.
Kyle nodded. “Yes, of course. According to the rules we all received, selling additional space can only begin after every guild’s right of first refusal has been considered.”
“What’s even better is that Guild Ranking decides the sequence, and there is also a limit per guild per turn.”
“See, there are supposed to be several rounds of this until all the spaces available are purchased. And the way it’s done ensures that by the time it’s over, everyone will have access to additional space. Some guilds, however, would choose to trade locations because it’s better to consolidate space, while others prefer to have smaller but more booths all over the place.”
“But in the end, the goal is to offer the same opportunities to everyone. While there are guilds that got to choose first because it’s officially part of their winnings for the last Astral Cup, that’s relatively negligible given the size of ISEC. So by all accounts, we should be able to buy a bigger space.”
Kyle smiled brightly. The type of smile that said he had so much faith in the system and the adults around them.
It was that naive smile he’d learned from their most innocent members. And the kind that would honestly hit the gut of anyone with at least a grain of conscience.
The officials stared at each other in growing horror. There was no bigger space left to sell. In fact, there was really no more usable space left for negotiation!
However, before they could do something about the building excitement, Princess Kira clapped her hands proudly. “Great. Then I will tell my father to visit. I was hesitant because of the small space, which is honestly smaller than my closet back home, but seeing how big our booth could also be, it should be fine.”
It was absolutely not fine.
