Chapter 744: The Great Escape
Well, Jax, for one, thought it was very cool. Then again, he had always enjoyed things like this!
Smack dab in the middle of what could only be described as guerrilla warfare, or well, just pure evasion, five figures moved with urgency through a dense, mutated forest.
It was dangerous, unpredictable, and filled with the kind of creatures that could chew through mecha plating like cardboard.
Naturally, this was the perfect place for five humans to decide to walk. Stealthily.
No mechas. No heavy armor. Just stealth.
Or at least, a couple of them thought they were moving stealthily.
Jax crouched low behind a giant root that looked suspiciously like a fossilized snake. His expression was serious. The whole creeping-around thing really spoke to him on a spiritual level. Every rustle of a leaf, every whisper of air—he felt like he was in a movie. A very low-budget film, but a movie nonetheless.
Also, when he entered the military, this had been the type of thing he actually imagined doing!
His hand went up, fingers slicing the air in a series of sharp, deliberate gestures.
Ollie immediately froze.
Luca followed, crouching beside a massive fern, his eyes darting left and right like a field agent deep behind enemy lines.
The three of them exchanged glances, each nodding with grave intensity.
A bird screeched somewhere above, and all three ducked so fast they nearly headbutted each other.
Jax’s hand flicked twice. Signal.
Ollie mirrored it. Confirmation.
Luca pointed forward, then made a swirling motion. All clear.
It was, in their minds, a flawless operation—one that deserved a thumbs-up like professionals concluding a high-stakes mission.
However, if anyone had seen them, they might have assumed these three had lost their collective minds.
Just like the two figures who followed a few paces behind.
Xavier and Kyle.
The contrast was staggering.
While the three eggs were crouching, rolling, and making unnecessary hand signals, the two of them walked in calm, measured silence. Their feet barely made a sound as they moved—each step cushioned by spiritual energy. They looked like they were gliding, because in a sense, they really were.
Xavier, in particular, moved with the kind of effortless elegance that made even the mutated flora seem reluctant to touch him.
Kyle, hands in his pockets, barely made a sound. His extended spiritual barrier expanded with every motion, bending the air around someone else for his personal peace of mind.
Together, they resembled two deities following a group of very determined grown-up children.
They were elegant. Composed. Effortlessly cool.
For about ten seconds.
Then Ollie tripped on an extended root.
Kyle’s elegant stance instinctively shifted into one where he shot out spiritual energy to balance his little star.
“!!!”
It was a close call, and the bright star, wearing a specialized exploration hazmat suit, sent over a flying kiss that hit a certain adjutant straight on the forehead.
“…”
“…”
Kyle’s expression remained impassive, but deep down, he couldn’t decide whether to be impressed or concerned.
Because all around them the forest shimmered with distortion—trees fused with crystal veins, mushrooms pulsing faintly with bioluminescent light, and vines that seemed to twitch ever so slightly.
This was a Mature Contaminated Zone.
So, who in their right mind would walk around a Mature Contaminated Zone on foot? With their spiritual energies exposed like that to boot?
Well, them. Apparently, the five of them.
All cadets, for that matter.
Sure, during the Astral Cup, they’d likely end up in such a place, but even then, they’d at least use mech—
“?”
But before he could ponder things further, his thoughts were derailed by a mop.
Specifically, a blonde one who made direct eye contact with him after peeking from behind a tree.
Those eyebrows wiggled together with his hair antenna, and Kyle could only accept his fate.
Ollie grinned and made that unmistakable “come here” gesture with his hand and head.
Obviously, the self-respecting adjutant bent to the will of heaven and came forward silently to evidently read the word his star mouthed with perfect clarity: “Snack.”
It was the look of a man who had fought valiantly and now believed himself deserving of sustenance.
Kyle’s lips twitched despite himself. With a faint exhale, he extended his spiritual energy, expanding the barrier coating the little mop to conceal him better.
“There,” Kyle muttered under his breath. “Eat slowly.”
Ollie grinned like a child on his birthday and immediately pulled a wrap from his space button.
Oliver Mylor was beyond thankful. Of course, because after thirty minutes of having to suffer on his own two feet, who wouldn’t be this hungry? At times like this, didn’t he deserve a snack?
Well, normal people.
Normal people likely wouldn’t have asked for a snack just thirty minutes into their venture.
Then again, normal people also wouldn’t even be doing something as insane as this to begin with. So maybe he really deserved that snack, no?
But if sane people wouldn’t be caught dead strolling like that, what were they even doing out there in the first place?
Ah, well, it was because one Luca Kyros had to make a run for it. Literally.
See, his earlier clean-up and storage efforts had done wonders for Zone Four and for his reputation. And while that was great and all, it may have been too effective in gaining a reputation as Luca ended up being followed everywhere.
Eager greetings, and people making heart gestures they had learned from one D-29 were all over the place. But Luca had no problem returning them with heartfelt thanks.
So, ideally, even if someone decided to once again let loose fireworks with his face on them, Luca would’ve just blushed and thanked them for their affection.
However, it was a different matter when the little money-grubber and full-time hoarder found it difficult to gather materials and conduct investigations due to that newly formed entourage.
It was a disaster!
During an eventful break at the shelter, the soldiers of House Kyros practically formed giant hearts for Luca every time he stood by the observation deck so he could see it from where he stood above them.
They would arrange themselves in figures and look at him with such earnest and shining eyes.
It was relatively soundless, with the soldiers understanding that, despite wanting to scream about Luca’s greatness into space, they couldn’t do that just yet.
So they wanted to do it through wordless gestures.
Several wordless gestures that got everyone wondering if they actually rehearsed such a thing. And it was even done in shifts! So Luca would always be able to feel his people’s love for him!
“…”
“…”
And it was sweet, alright.
Until the soldiers stationed initially in Zone Four, as well as the imperial reinforcements, thought it was suspicious.
Because who wouldn’t find such movements utterly suspicious when they’ve already encountered so many crazy things in the past how many days?!
And that curiosity turned into action, so everyone started to stare at what the young Kyros heir would do.
Therefore, when D-29 and Sid mentioned finding something interesting during cleanup, they encountered a big problem!
Because now, everywhere Luca went, it was as if he were being followed by a giant mass of shadows!
Then just how would he be able to see that interesting thing?!
And so they escaped.
Running away from all the hearts with all their might.
__
And what do you know? It might have actually been a good call, because it led them to an interesting and definitely controversial discovery.
It was just that leaving the place had been a little too difficult.
Mostly because Luca had to quite literally become one with the foliage to escape the people chasing them.
“Stay still,” Jax whispered, his voice calm and oddly serene for someone half-buried in a bush. “We’re part of nature now.”
Luca blinked, crouched beside him, his hair sticking out like a branch among the leaves. “P-part of nature?” he whispered back, confused but obedient. “Okay.”
Kyle thought that was absurd when Jax’s hair definitely gave up on blending about five minutes ago, but who was he to judge when his charge’s blonde hair stuck out like a sore thumb?
See, they’d split up in different directions earlier, each trying to find an inconspicuous place that they could teleport to without being spotted.
Unfortunately, their pursuers were nothing if not persistent.
Every time someone managed to find a safe area, D-29’s similarly panicked voice would sound in Luca’s mind.
“Host, someone is approaching your direction!”
And a beast would’ve been nice, but these were the same soldiers who had been passionately looking for him earlier!
So move they did. Through three doors, in fact—each one leading to another “safe” area that turned out to be anything but.
At one point, Ollie stepped out and almost came face-to-back with two patrolling soldiers. So he quickly returned and screamed, “Abort! Abort!”
Then, finally, Jax’s voice came through the comms, calm and reassuring as always.
“Well, my location should be safe.”
It wasn’t.
Then again, the operative word was “should.”
