Chapter 728: The Explosive Plan

Or… Maybe not.

Not after a thunderous tremor rippled through the deep.

No one really heard the thunder. Instead, there was a dull, crushing vibration that rolled across the ocean floor, shaking sand and silt into a swirling dance before everything snapped into chaos.

“Hey! What the—?! I thought you said that was the weakest you had?!” One adjutant’s surprised voice came through the comms

Bubbles burst across his screen as another shockwave hit, rocking his mecha so hard he almost bit his tongue. And yet he was still out there wrapping his arms protectively around the likely culprit whose expression didn’t match the soft body’s jerking movement.

It was suddenly chaotic.

But the same shining mop would like to remind everyone that, to be fair, this wasn’t entirely his fault.

See, before all this, the blonde had been personally assigned what was arguably the fourth most satisfying job of his life: blowing things up.

Legally.

With full authorization.

Okay, maybe with partial authorization—since the Marshal and the other military personnel weren’t exactly privy to this, but still. The Imperial Crown Prince said it should be fine!

Then it should be fine, right?

So it was a rare, beautiful moment that should’ve made every childhood dream come true—except now, some people couldn’t see the beauty in it!

“Kyle! They are! I swear! See, you can’t even hear the boom!” Ollie “The bomber” protested with a pout as another finger hovered over another dangerous button.

“Well, yes,” Kyle’s calm voice was definitely for the person secured on his lap, but there was definitely one redhead who needed to hear it over the comms. “That’s because we’re underwater.”

Because if they had heard such a thing, wouldn’t that be bad?

It would be, and from inside the parasitic bloom, Jax was already saying, “Then why does it feel like my ribcage just heard that?!”

Then again, he wasn’t exactly wrong.

For even without the sound, the concussive force rippled like thunder made of pressure. It struck the seabed, rolling upward in waves so powerful that even the surrounding dead monsters would’ve flinched had they been able to.

And yet, the targets weren’t even the tentacles themselves.

That was something Xavier had been clear about, as they couldn’t possibly risk damaging the core.

So why even do that?

Because the probably insane prince wanted to force the hand, well, the tentacles of the monster.

Every blast hit the seabed strategically, shaking the terrain in measured rhythm, each one closer than the last.

From Sid’s cockpit, Xavier’s voice came steady and precise, each coordinate crisp and deliberate.

“Three o’clock.”

Another blast erupted below, scattering debris like dust.

“Five o’clock.”

The ocean floor trembled again, and with it would come the slight snicker of a maybe possessed companion pilot.

“Just give me a sec!” Jax yelled again as the seabed shook beneath them, his voice a mix of outrage and panic.

“How can I finish this properly if everything keeps shaking?!”

While he wasn’t really touching the floor, his mecha was definitely up close and personal with the lining of the monster’s gastrovascular cavity right now. And every time the underwater bombs went off, the creature whose polyp was underground would similarly shake.

Just a bit more! Prayed the heavy mecha pilot as he tried finishing the task of forcing an ungodly amount of spiritual water into the monster’s body.

Hah. Yes.

Spiritual water.

It sounded insane, and that was because it absolutely was!

How could the monster not act like it had won something when it was getting this much spiritual energy?!

“Captain,” the redhead called over the comms, voice strained. “I’m done with the last barrel!”

And what do you know? It was apparently time for Xavier to start.

__

Meanwhile, in one of the familiar rooms, one anxious son was teary-eyed, his relief overflowing as color returned to his father’s face.

He had checked twice, then thrice, with the elders, who confirmed that Duke Leander Kyros was, in fact, alive and now safe from spiritual energy exhaustion.

Only then did Luca finally relax enough to stand.

“Alright,” he whispered, taking a deep breath and preparing to return to the battlefield.

Or at least, he would’ve—if not for the sudden noise that filled the room.

A sharp whistle.

A collective gasp.

And then, utter chaos.

Everyone inside the room— his mother, his in-laws, his aunts, and the brave souls who rushed in after hearing about the Duke’s collapse—were now staring wide-eyed at the live projection displayed by D-29.

“W-What’s going on?” Luca asked, looking up in confusion.

The moment his gaze found the feeds, his breath caught.

Each mecha’s perspective displayed a different angle of something that was equal parts terrifying and mesmerizing.

From Xavier’s feed, nothing but a wall of frost.

From Jax’s wider feed behind him, it was even crazier. The frost wasn’t just ahead of the prince; it had spread everywhere Jax looked, coating the entire view in shimmering ice.

It was patterned, as if following something the others couldn’t make sense of.

And there, right in the center of Jax’s view, was Sid, whose hands were practically fused with the frost.

But it was only with D-64 and Kyle’s feeds that they saw the full scope of it—an enormous, flower-like horror slowly being transformed into something ethereal. Frosted filaments bloomed outward like glass veins, suddenly glittering beneath the dim ocean light.

The entire bloom was freezing from the inside out.

And it was breathtaking.

Terrifying, yes. But looking at it now, it was mortifyingly beautiful.

But what was probably even more beautiful was the moment Luca watched Xavier detach Sid’s arm from the frozen wall.

In one smooth movement, Sid’s wrist shifted, spiritual energy gathering and forming into a massive ice blade that glimmered faintly in the cold water. The mecha moved with quiet precision, slicing through the frost-coated surface in a clean arc.

At first, nothing was visible beyond the pale shimmer of ice. But when Sid turned the frozen section around, the clear underside revealed something that stole everyone’s breath.

Encased within the translucent frost was a cluster of crystal cores, perfectly preserved, shining like a constellation trapped in glass.

And then Xavier’s voice came through the comms, low and soft, as if this wasn’t a battlefield but a quiet evening between two people.

“Here. I hope you like this.”

Every head in the room turned toward Luca, who stood frozen in front of the projection.

The poor money-grubber, already wrung out from panic and stress, could only gape at the sight. While he expected they’d be able to get crystals, their original plan couldn’t have allowed for the whole piece to be taken out like that.

So how?

Did his husband do all that just to take out the core for him?

Of course, he liked it.

How could he not like it?!

He liked it very much!

His heart leapt, his throat tightened, and before he could stop himself, he blurted out, “Yes! Yes! I love you very much!”

“???”

“!!!”

Gasps filled the room.

And before anyone could react further, a faint, amused chuckle came through the open channel.

Then, the calm and unmistakable voice of one prince—completely unfazed by the audience—replied, “I love you too.”

“!!!”
