Chapter 999: Chapter 999 Confrontation 3
Now that they were confined to civilian security work, idle hours only left their minds wandering back to the horrors they had witnessed. Action, any action, was a welcome distraction from the weight of their past and the ghosts that lingered in their memories.
Fortunately, Hera’s bodyguards had access to proper healthcare and psychological support, which eased the weight of their PTSD.
Even so, they were men forged in life-or-death combat, and being reduced to ordinary bodyguard duty often felt stifling. But serving under Hera was different.
She wasn’t a master who merely expected protection while living in comfort; she fought beside them, drew danger to herself, and faced it head-on. That constant action reignited the fire in them, stirring the same rush they once felt on the frontlines.
And so, they realized that following Hera wasn’t so bad after all. On paper, they were just bodyguards protecting a civilian, but Hera’s life was anything but ordinary. It was filled with action that stirred their blood, challenges that kept them sharp, and drama that seemed to follow her everywhere.
Watching her face every problem head-on made them forget their own painful memories, burying their PTSD beneath curiosity and the thrill of simply being around her. After all, even battle-hardened men couldn’t deny that a little chaos, and even the occasional popcorn-worthy gossip, was enough to distract their minds from the horrors of blood and killing.
Besides, being by Hera’s side, they had long realized that the men around her came from all walks of life, and not just ordinary ones. They even discovered that Luke was from the underworld, an actual mafia boss.
Who wouldn’t get excited over that?
So when trouble came knocking on their door, Hera’s security detail wasn’t worried in the least bit. Instead, they were more thrilled than troubled, their eyes lighting up with anticipation as they even began taunting Silvia’s hired bodyguards.
And because these veteran soldiers were used to cursing and trading crude jokes back in the barracks, they could be downright vicious when they wanted to. Their taunts were sharp and biting, the kind of words that were hard to swallow.
The more Silvia’s bodyguards listened, the redder their faces became with anger. Yet, the men in front of them didn’t even bother acknowledging them properly; instead, they kept talking amongst themselves, openly mocking and criticizing as if Silvia and her people didn’t even exist.
And really, who could stand being humiliated like that?
The lead of Silvia’s bodyguards looked ready to burst a vein, his neck taut with rage as he barked, almost roaring, “Everyone, get them!” His men immediately surged forward.
Silvia, though furious herself, stepped back a few paces, smugly smirking as she prepared to watch Hera’s bodyguards get beaten down. In her mind, the floor would be wiped clean with them.
But reality struck cruelly fast.
With just a single move each, Hera’s bodyguards sent Silvia’s men flying like ragdolls, their bodies crashing down one by one. Instead of wiping the floor with Hera’s people, Silvia’s guards were the ones being used as mops.
Within moments, they were sprawled across the ground, groaning in pain and clutching their battered limbs. The sight left Silvia stunned; this was nothing like the victory she had imagined.
More than anyone, Silvia’s head bodyguard suffered the worst. The captain of Hera’s security detail struck him first with a brutal chop to the throat, leaving him gasping soundlessly, his airway squeezed tight as his eyes rolled back in pain.
But that was only the beginning. Before he could recover, a savage kick slammed into the side of his knee, forcing him to collapse onto the floor with a sickening thud that echoed the pain.
Then, without hesitation, the captain drove a crushing kick into his abdomen, sending the man hurtling into the wall. He crashed hard, his body crumpling as he briefly blacked out from the sheer force.
As Silvia’s head bodyguard struggled to rise, failing again and again, the rest of her men were struck down one after another like helpless flies. Against Hera’s security detail, they were nothing more than chicks flicked aside with casual disdain.
Even those livestreaming the scene were left utterly stunned; the fight had erupted without warning and ended just as suddenly, leaving them reeling. Their hands shook as they recorded, the harsh sounds of fists slamming into flesh and bodies crashing to the ground echoing in their ears.
Each thud carried such weight that they could almost feel the pain themselves, unable to imagine surviving even a single one of those blows.
After the fight, the younger onlookers who had gathered for the drama were torn between panic and curiosity. None of them wanted to risk getting dragged into the brawl, yet the fact that Silvia was an heiress made the spectacle far too enticing to walk away from.
It wasn’t every day that they got a glimpse into the world of the elite, and the chance to capture it firsthand was irresistible. The thought of livestreaming such a scandal thrilled them; one viral broadcast could skyrocket their fame and followers overnight.
Compared to their own fragile lives, the onlookers knew they could never withstand those kinds of blows. Still, since they were already in a hospital, the thought flickered through their minds, it might be easy to get treated if they were hurt, and no one would actually die.
At worst, it would just mean excruciating pain. That small comfort kept them from leaving, though none dared meet the captain of Hera’s security detail in the eye. He stood there like a predator surveying its prey, and the civilians knew if Silvia’s bulky bodyguards couldn’t last even a few moves, people like them wouldn’t stand a chance.
“What’s going on here?!” A clear, melodious female voice suddenly rang out from behind the guards stationed at the entrance to the floor.
“Oh! You finally decided to show your face here?!” Silvia sneered, her tone laced with mockery. But beneath the sharp edge of her words, there was a faint tremor, betraying the fear she tried so hard to suppress.
The brutal fight had left her shaken; her people hadn’t even managed to land a single scratch, and she knew she was in serious trouble. Panic simmered in her chest, though she masked it with practiced poise.
After all, she was raised in the Avery family with strict lessons in etiquette. Silvia had long since learned how to hide her true feelings and put on an act when needed.
“Hmm?” Hera, who had just been gently pushed out by Rafael, turned her attention toward the captain of her security detail.
Moments earlier, she, Rafael, and Leo had been preparing to take their afternoon nap in Leo’s hospital room.
Zhane, on the other hand, had already left the hospital to visit his family and discuss the matter concerning his former uncle-in-law. Since that man had once been part of the Everett family, Zhane needed his grandfather’s approval before taking any action.
Though he wanted to teach his ex–uncle-in-law a lesson, he still had to consider his family’s feelings. For now, while Zhane was away handling that, Hera, Rafael, and Leo remained behind in the hospital, resting as they awaited a resolution in Cherry’s case.
But who would have thought that just as they were about to rest, someone would come knocking to stir up trouble?
Silvia and her entourage weren’t exactly discreet either; their loud voices carried all the way into Leo’s hospital room, immediately rousing Hera, Rafael, and Leo from their drowsiness.
“What’s going on outside?” Hera asked curiously. She already caught the sound of jabs and heated commotion, but she turned to Rafael, who was lying beside her, expecting him to take her to see for herself.
Rafael knew all too well that trouble was brewing, yet when he saw Hera’s inquisitive expression, he could only sigh. Resigned, he fetched her wheelchair and gently carried her over, preparing to bring her to the scene.
“Wait here. You can’t be seen right now; your enemies are already looking for you. If more people spot you in this condition, you’ll be as good as dead,” Rafael ordered, his tone sharp and uncompromising.
He wasn’t wrong. Leo’s location had been compromised, and while Zhane worked on dealing with the mole, moving Leo to another floor would only risk exposing him again. For now, the safest option was to keep him hidden and avoid drawing attention.
Although Rafael’s commanding tone grated on Leo’s nerves, but he knew he couldn’t argue. He pushed himself up slowly, pressed his lips together, and nodded. With Hera and Rafael stepping out to check the situation, Leo’s drowsiness faded; he couldn’t relax until they returned.
Only then would he feel any measure of assurance that Hera was okay.
As soon as Rafael wheeled Hera out of Leo’s room, they were met with the sight of a crowd gathered not too far away. The commotion was centered near the elevator, forcing Rafael to push Hera farther down the corridor since Leo’s room, after all, was tucked in the middle of the building.
