Chapter 983: Chapter 983 Preparing For The Worst?
Besides, Hera’s family had been involved in countless charity cases and even sponsored research on cancer and other difficult health issues, because Hera firmly believed that many people in the world were suffering and needed help.
Although cancer studies and drug development weren’t their main focus, Dr. Zigheart was experienced enough, having run numerous tests in his lab, that he might be able to find a solution. That was why Hera immediately sent him when the opportunity came.
More than that, Hera didn’t want to give Sophia the chance to shine or take advantage of the situation. From what she had observed earlier, Sophia carried a strong “green tea” vibe, sweet on the surface but sly underneath, and seemed to be targeting Cherry and her family.
Considering that Cherry had access to the secluded garden where they had gone and was even assigned to a floor just below Leo, it could only mean that Cherry’s family was influential. If that was the case, their family held significant weight not just in the city but perhaps across the entire country.
Hera didn’t want to judge Sophia too harshly on a personal level, after all, she didn’t truly know her. But thinking of the worst-case scenario, whether about people or situations, was a habit that helped Hera stay prepared.
If she was wrong about Sophia, she could always apologize later. But if she was right, she might even prevent something dangerous from happening, maybe even save a life.
She wasn’t targeting Sophia because of Leo. Rather, after everything she had been through, Hera’s instincts had become sharp, and her tendency to overthink made her consider every possible angle and outcome.
Sophia kept lingering in her thoughts, raising suspicions that she might be a mole or a stalker. Whatever her role might be in harming Leo, Hera couldn’t shake the feeling that Sophia wasn’t completely innocent.
If they kept a close watch and investigated her further, Hera was certain they’d uncover at least a few unsettling truths.
Until then, Hera resolved to keep a close watch on Sophia.
So, when everyone gathered at Cherry’s hospital room, Sophia and the Sullivan brothers were firmly ushered out into the hallway. Zhane’s suspicions about Sophia made him wary, and he refused to let her interfere with Cherry’s examination or treatment.
Fortunately, Hera had called in Dr. Zigheart for support, which gave Zhane the perfect excuse, claiming that too many people crowding the room would only hinder the patient’s care. In reality, it was a convenient cover to keep Sophia at a safe distance.
Sophia was barred from entering, so she lingered outside the hospital room with everyone else. Hera, Leo, Rafael, and Terry stood off to the side, trying not to draw attention since they had only followed Hera there to gossip. From where they stood, they could clearly hear Sophia’s soft, reassuring voice.
“Cherry’s big brother, don’t worry too much. Director Zhane may be young, but he’s highly competent and already revered as a genius. And with Dr. Zigheart assisting him, you can rest assured.”
“I’m sure you’ve even heard their names before, your parents themselves once consulted with Director Everett,” Sophia said gently, her tone dripping with concern as she tried to calm the Sullivan brothers, showcasing her tender, virtuous side.
But behind the facade, her thoughts were far from pure. ‘Hmph! Even if Dr. Everett or Dr. Zigheart are in there, the result won’t change. They won’t find anything. As long as I keep playing the good, caring girl in front of the Sullivans, I’ll win their attention. And once Cherry is gone, they’ll have no choice but to take me in.’
On the outside, Sophia continued her act flawlessly, sobbing softly and pitifully, drawing sympathy from the brothers, who actually thanked her for worrying about their sister.
But what Sophia had expected never came. She had been waiting for the alarm to blare from inside the hospital room, for panic to erupt as Cherry slowly slipped away. Yet no matter how long she waited, the silence remained unbroken. Nothing happened.
Her confidence began to waver, unease creeping in until she found herself fidgeting restlessly. Hera, who had been keeping a close eye on her, noticed the shift. Sophia looked tense, like she was anticipating something that stubbornly refused to occur.
‘Is she… waiting for bad news?’ Hera wondered dryly, half in jest, though the thought stuck.
After three long hours of tense silence, Sophia could no longer contain herself. The waiting was too much, the uncertainty too sharp. Finally, she stepped forward and rapped nervously on the door.
Sophia was ignored several times, but on her fifth attempt, the door finally slid open. Zhane stood there, looking utterly drained, his clothes clinging with sweat. Before Sophia could even glimpse inside, he quickly shut the door behind him, making sure she had no chance to disturb the people within.
His expression was grim as his gaze settled on the Sullivan brothers. The weight of his look said more than words, but when he finally spoke, his voice was low and heavy.
“Mr. Sullivan… it seems your sister’s condition is far worse than we anticipated.”
“What do you mean, doctor? What’s wrong with my sister?” the eldest brother blurted out, his voice cracking with panic. “She’s here to regain her strength before the bone marrow transplant.”
“We already have a donor ready; we were just waiting for her body to recover enough for the procedure. So… what’s wrong?” His eyes were bloodshot with worry, clinging desperately to hope while refusing to imagine the worst.
His words made everything clear for Hera and the others as well, their expressions shifting in quiet realization. Hera, especially, cast a thoughtful glance at Sophia.
Zhane exhaled slowly before suggesting, “Perhaps we should continue this conversation in my office.” He turned and started down the hall.
“Wait, I’m coming too,” Sophia said quickly, stepping forward with a nervous eagerness that betrayed her unease.
“Why?” Zhane asked sternly, his voice cutting like a blade. In moments like this, his authority became unmistakable, reminding everyone that he wasn’t someone to trifle with when he meant business.
“B-Because I’m the donor they mentioned,” Sophia stammered, her voice trembling under the weight of his unyielding gaze.
“You can’t,” Zhane replied flatly. “You’re neither her attending physician nor a family member. Only immediate family may be present.” His tone left no room for argument, making it clear he had no intention of entertaining Sophia further.
Before turning away, Zhane cast Hera a meaningful look, one that spoke volumes without words. Then, with a brisk nod, he led the Sullivan brothers down the hall.
Moments later, a pair of security guards positioned themselves in front of Cherry’s hospital room, making it clear that no one unauthorized would get inside.
Sophia wanted to protest, but no one spared her so much as a glance. Every attempt she made to step forward was blocked, and the nurses, along with Dr. Zigheart, remained firmly inside the room, showing no sign of leaving anytime soon.
Catching Hera’s gaze, Rafael understood instantly. With a smooth shift, he stepped in front of the two nurses and took charge. “Please escort these two back into the room,” he instructed the nurses, his tone firm but calm.
Then, narrowing his eyes, he added, “And remind the guards, no one is to approach their floor. Under no circumstances are Leo and Terry to be brought back to their room by anyone other than the two of you. If you fail to follow orders, you’ll be held personally responsible should anything happen to them.”
The two nurses paled, nodding rapidly like frightened birds pecking at rice before hastily ushering Leo and Terry away. Rafael then turned on his heel, then he pushed Hera’s wheelchair and followed closely behind Zhane.
So preoccupied with her own worries, Sophia didn’t even notice Leo leave, much less think about following him. She stood frozen in front of Cherry’s room, unsure of what to do next, her mind spiraling.
To steady herself, she clung to a single thought, that Zhane wouldn’t uncover anything. The meeting he mentioned in his office had to be nothing more than a way to prepare the Sullivan brothers for the worst.
‘Right. No one will ever know I had anything to do with this,’ she repeated to herself like a mantra. Yet, as she paced restlessly back and forth, her composure began to crack, her fingers fidgeting, teeth gnawing at her nails.
As soon as Zhane and the Sullivan brothers reached his office, Zhane gestured for them to sit while he moved calmly toward the side table to prepare drinks.
“Tea, coffee, or something else?” he asked casually, taking his time as though he were in no rush, when in truth, he was only waiting for Hera to arrive.
“Just water for us,” the eldest brother answered, his hands fidgeting as he sank into the couch, unable to hide his unease.
“Alright,” Zhane replied evenly. He set out glasses, poured each of them water, and then quietly brewed a pot of tea with a small plate of snacks, clearly meant for Hera.
