Capítulo 1034: Chapter 1034 Battle Of Wits

One of those silenced victims was a police officer assigned to investigate the girl’s suicide. He had wanted to give the grieving parents closure. He refused to give up, chasing every lead quietly after his own chief shut down the case, because he was afraid of offending someone powerful.

So the police officer continued in secret… and paid for it with his life. He was killed in the line of duty, and his death shattered the last bit of hope the poor couple had of ever getting justice. Broken and defeated, they eventually died in their grief.

And even after all that, the culprits were still living comfortably, enjoying their lives as if they had never caused anyone’s death, and continuing their reckless, cruel ways.

How could Hera turn a blind eye to that?

Sending the evidence of their infidelity to his wife was only the first step. Before, she hadn’t even known about them, but now, they had crossed into her line of sight on their own. That was their fault.

And by taking action, Hera could protect the community, ensuring no one else would fall victim to people as venomous as them, just like how the college student and her parents had.

Since the victim’s parents had already passed away, filing a case in court wouldn’t be easy. Instead, Hera could rely on Dave to use his influence to pressure the chief of police into reopening the investigation into the bullying, putting Christy and President Lincoln behind bars.

To ensure they couldn’t evade justice, she planned to weaken President Lincoln’s power, letting his wife reclaim most of his assets and authority. Once that was secured, she would have Larry Wickman oversee the case.

With his legal expertise, he would know exactly how to ensure these two wicked people faced the harshest possible punishment, all while using her family’s influence to apply pressure on the court.

This approach would not only set a precedent against those who abuse their power, but with Dave’s involvement, it would also raise his public visibility and strengthen his reputation as the Young Minister of the country.

In short, it was like hitting multiple birds with one stone.

Especially now, with Dave’s war on drugs at its peak, opposition was mounting. People both domestically and abroad were rallying against him, claiming to think of human life or justice, and that Dave’s way of dealing with things was over the top, while launching smear campaigns to tarnish his reputation.

Dave, however, remained confident that no one could stop him from ridding the country of the scourges and pests that caused so much death and crime.

Still, Hera was worried.

She knew others might exploit this situation to attack Dave. With the benefits he had gained from other nations, she was certain that many countries harbored grudges against him. They could use his uncompromising war on drugs, where some criminals inevitably died, as ammunition, and many would argue for those criminals’ second chances or the value of every life.

But Dave refused to relent, fully aware that his actions would step on many toes. And, as Hera feared, some nations were ready to take advantage of that.

Hera wouldn’t have been surprised if other nations sent envoys to drag Dave before a world court, claiming “justice for the deaths of those criminals,” arguing that he should have let the legal system decide rather than taking matters into his own hands.

Thinking it through, she realized that Dave and Luke’s situation was already precarious. They were stretched thin, battling three powerful mafia groups, each with far-reaching influence and even connections within certain authorities. Some of the mudslinging against Dave likely came from these factions.

If he wasn’t careful, he could get seriously hurt. That made dealing with President Lincoln and Christy all the more useful, helping to reopen the case could slightly repair Dave’s tarnished reputation. Even though Dave was eloquent and had the support of many civilians, Hera knew it was always better to be cautious than regretful.

Now, Hera was thinking ten steps ahead, planning how to help her lovers navigate the current predicament, while also giving Athena and Zen a measure of justice for their minor quarrel that had somehow spiraled completely out of proportion.

“Why are you going this far? Was it really necessary?” Christy suddenly asked, her face pale and lips trembling. No matter who looked at her, she seemed pitiful, and many of the men nearby, although they were already aware that she had been a mistress, couldn’t help but still feel their hearts tugged at by the sight of her beautiful yet vulnerable expression.

Hera wasn’t sure whether Christy was deliberately trying to garner sympathy or if she truly felt that way.

But it didn’t matter. What Christy had done was long past, and countless lives had already been ruined by her actions. Even if she was now terrified and fearing President Lincoln’s wife would come after her, Hera felt no pity.

This was simply retribution for her past deeds. Being a mistress to a married man with a family was never right; no one had forced her at knifepoint. It had been her choice all along, and now, she had to face the consequences.

Still, even Hera had to admit that Christy, being a beautiful girl of a similar age, knew exactly how to use her charms to tug at men’s heartstrings. Even President Lincoln, despite his own fear, managed to pull himself together and wrap his arms around Christy protectively, his instincts awakened by her pitiful expression, just like many of the men nearby.

Hera, meanwhile, couldn’t help but sneak a glance at Zhane and Rafael to see if they were similarly affected. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, they weren’t looking at Christy at all.

Instead, their gazes were fixed on Hera, amusement and expectation dancing in their smirks, as if they were watching a live drama unfold with her as the heroine catching the culprit red-handed.

Somehow, Hera realized her worries that they might pity Christy had been for nothing, and she couldn’t help but laugh at herself for overthinking it. She rubbed her tingling nose, feeling a twinge of guilt for even doubting them.

Her gaze shifted back to Christy, who, despite her pitiful act, seemed to be waiting for Rafael and Zhane to fall for it and scold Hera for being cruel. Christy even peeked out from President Lincoln’s arms a few times, hoping to see Rafael or Zhane’s eyes filled with pity or anger toward Hera.

But no matter how much she looked, both men’s eyes remained fixed on Hera alone. Christy’s frustration grew, her teeth gritting in anger, yet she knew she couldn’t break character now; any slip would instantly turn the little pity she’d earned into fury, exposing her attempt to manipulate her way out of the situation.

The scene had now turned into a battle of wits between Hera and Christy, whether Hera could successfully expose both Christy and President Lincoln, or if Christy’s pitiful act would be convincing enough to rally support and push back against Hera.

After all, everyone gathered in this VVIP parking lot was either a big shot in the entertainment industry or from a wealthy family, and even one ally siding with Christy could give her enough leverage to stall Hera and buy herself time to strategize against President Lincoln’s wife’s inevitable wrath.

Christy didn’t even want to stay in the venue anymore. The fear that Mrs. Lincoln might already be on her way and could catch her with her husband made her dread the potential disaster that awaited her.

“We were only fighting over a parking spot, and yes, it was wrong of me to slap your friend, but was it really necessary to drag me through the mud?” Christy sobbed pitifully, noticing that Zhane and Rafael weren’t reacting as she had hoped. So she needed to assert her presence, to pull their attention back to her.

“If that’s the case, I’ll kneel and apologize, okay? But you don’t need to ruin me by calling me a mistress. President Lincoln has been supporting my studies as a sponsor to an impoverished student.”

“Sure, he gave me extra attention out of pity, but he treated me like a daughter all this time, I even forgot I wasn’t really his daughter…”

She tried desperately to defend her name. Seeing this, even President Lincoln nodded, hoping to salvage his own reputation. No matter what slip of the tongue or evidence surfaced, he clung to this narrative, hoping it would allow him to coax his wife later and avoid the threat of divorce.

“Treated like a daughter?” Hera sneered, a laugh escaping her lips as she took in Christy’s shameless expression.

Christy clearly thought Hera didn’t know the full extent of her entanglement with her sugar daddy. After all, Hera wasn’t much older than her, so Christy assumed her knowledge of the situation was shallow.

She believed she could still twist the facts, make Hera look overly aggressive, and redirect the crowd’s judgmental gaze onto Hera, turning the tables so that Hera would be the one persecuted.
