Capítulo 1032: Chapter 1032 Hera To The Rescue 6
She could see the fine texture of his skin, the chiseled line of his jaw, and the delicate sweep of his lashes over his emerald eyes, though the expression hidden behind his glasses remained unreadable under the light.
“Thank you.” Hera smiled softly at Zhane, seemingly oblivious to the subtle shift in the pot-bellied man’s demeanor. But she didn’t care whether he feared them or not; it would only make him look like a struggling, dying man.
It was as if, to save face, the pot-bellied man refused to back down, even if it meant resorting to intimidation and even using interest in front of Zhane and Rafael. In the upper circle, almost everyone believed that personal interest could sway everyone to turn a blind eye.
He hoped to exploit that, expecting both Zhane and Rafael to defer to him out of junior respect for their elder. But he was about to realize that at this moment, seniority meant nothing to them. What mattered most was right versus wrong, and on that measure, he had no leverage.
Thinking he had found a new opening, the pot-bellied man started speaking again, as if negotiating a business deal. He assumed Rafael, who was mostly motivated by money, and always prioritized interest, while Zhane, though perhaps indifferent to profit, might still show respect, after all, he believed Zhane’s profession required it.
Buoyed by this belief, he felt a surge of confidence to push his argument.
“Young Master Briley, Young Master Everett, I… I’m so sorry you had to witness this, but as an elder, I couldn’t just stand by; I had to teach the brat a lesson. It’s not like I was the one offering his cousin to me, so how could I be in the wrong?”
“Who would have thought they’d misunderstand me… and speak to me so crudely? And even the girl with you… to speak to me that way, it’s just… too much.”
He spoke as if he were the one being bullied by his juniors, trying to make Zen and Hera appear disrespectful and ill-mannered, conveniently elevating the fact that they had just publicly humiliated him with their words.
Although he was clearly interested in Hera, he felt he first needed to put her in her place. Once that was done, he could attempt to steal her from under Rafael and Zhane’s watchful eyes.
He assumed that young men of their stature wouldn’t take someone like her seriously; men of power like them usually opted for arranged marriages for business alliances. Besides, it was widely known that both Rafael and Zhane had arranged marriages in place, so he reasoned that even if they were escorting Hera, it might be more for novelty than genuine concern.
After all, her beauty was undeniable, even he found himself captivated by it.
But unfortunately for him, the information he had about Zhane and Rafael having fiancées was outdated, a mere history that never truly saw the light of day.
Both men never fully acknowledged those arranged marriages, and when Hera entered their lives, they unhesitatingly ended the agreements. In Zhane’s case, Hera even knew about it firsthand, since Sienna had confronted her directly.
Hearing this, Rafael snorted mockingly. “I never imagined my woman would be offered to some unknown old lecher, such audacity!” He finished with a scowl, his aura flaring, and the pot-bellied man instinctively took a step back.
He hadn’t expected Rafael to confront him so openly in front of everyone. If it had been Zen, perhaps he could have reasoned that Zen didn’t know him or his standing, but Rafael? A man who had long sat at the top, frequently crossing paths with him at business banquets, openly backing Hera and confronting him like this meant he was throwing caution and courtesy completely aside.
Desperately, he glanced at Zhane, only to find that Zhane hadn’t even acknowledged him, treating him like nothing more than a writhing maggot on the ground, indifferent and unconcerned.
“Young Master Briley, I know your family has been rising these past years, but to act like this openly… are you sure you know what you’re doing? Are you really willing to jeopardize any future business ties with my corporation just for a woman?”
“Haven’t you thought this through?” The pot-bellied man tried again, though even he could feel how close he was to the edge this time. His attempt to intimidate Rafael felt like a last-ditch effort, hoping Rafael would reconsider, realize that sacrificing a business opportunity for a single woman wasn’t worth it.
After all, there were plenty of beautiful women in the world. Only if she were an heiress to a massive conglomerate or a foreign princess could it make sense to risk such a thing. But as far as the pot-bellied man saw it, Hera was merely beautiful, not valuable.
Rafael didn’t even bother to respond, simply letting out a disdainful snort. Hera, fully aware of the pot-bellied man’s intentions, allowed herself a cold, knowing smirk as she glanced down at her phone.
Gerald’s report had just arrived. Without a word, she skimmed through it, and with each line, her smirk grew wider. Her understanding of the situation, and perhaps even her worldview, shifted with every revelation.
“Oh my, President Lincoln… you talk so much about business interests and all that,” Hera began, pausing deliberately for emphasis, a mischievous glint in her eyes. Seeing her like this, Rafael, Zhane, Athena, and Zen exchanged knowing smiles, sensing that Hera was about to drop a bombshell in front of everyone.
Anticipation built in their chests as they waited to see how she would dismantle this crooked old man.
“But… does your wife know that at your age, you’re keeping a college student as a mistress?” she said, casting a pointed glance at the barbie-like, arrogant Christy clinging to him. The moment the words landed, both President Lincoln and Christy froze, stunned and dumbfounded, taking a long moment to even recover.
The entire place buzzed with murmurs and excited whispers, the air electric with gossip. After all, it was the first time many of them had witnessed President Lincoln so brazenly twist black into white. And now, hearing that he kept a mistress was an even bigger bombshell, especially since everyone knew his wife was as fierce as a tigress.
Perhaps that was why he felt the need to keep a mistress, because his wife was as fierce as a tiger, and he craved a woman who would feed his ego and bolster his sense of masculinity.
Yet he also knew he could never truly defy his wife. From start to finish, he had maintained the pretense that Christy was merely like a daughter to him, not his mistress. Whenever he went out with her, he made sure everyone misunderstood their relationship.
Although he already had children, his wife’s fierceness and protectiveness kept them out of the public eye, much like Hera had been raised, so no one really knew what his daughter looked like. He had taken full advantage of this secrecy. But now, thanks to Gerald’s swift investigation, that carefully guarded deception had become a weapon in Hera’s hands.
Hearing Hera openly expose his secret, President Lincoln instantly paled, imagining his Amazonian wife descending on him to mete out her fury. That fear, however, quickly morphed into anger; he wanted to silence Hera and protect his secret at any cost.
In his rising panic, he forgot the many witnesses around him and took a step forward, intent on stopping her before she could speak further. But the moment he moved, Rafael and Zhane flanked Hera like unyielding sentinels, and the line of bodyguards behind them stepped forward as well, exuding such sheer menace that President Lincoln shriveled instantly, like a cabbage left in the sun.
“You! Are you not afraid of retaliation?!” President Lincoln bellowed, his face shifting between pale and flushed as fear, anger, and humiliation warred within him.
Christy went completely pale, her bravado evaporating instantly. She had always been arrogant because she knew she had a powerful backer, and everyone believed she was his daughter, showing her respect and deference.
But now that the secret was out, that she had been kept as a mistress, her carefully constructed facade crumbled. Not only would she be disrespected and looked down upon from now on, but she might also face the wrath of President Lincoln’s formidable wife, a threat far worse than anyone else’s judgment.
“Why would I?” Hera said coolly, her eyes fixed on him. “I don’t think your wife would let you off the hook, President Lincoln. After all, she has no idea that you’ve been spending your joint assets on your mistress.”
“That car she’s driving? It must have cost a million dollars. A college student with a car like that, imagine the envy and admiration she’s been getting at school. And that bag she’s holding… $150,000, wasn’t it? Tsk tsk…”
Hera’s gaze then swept Christy from head to toe, sending a shiver down the girl’s spine. Finally, her eyes locked on President Lincoln, and in that instant, he realized she was no ordinary woman.
