Capítulo 643: “I Like The Underdog”

“See, Apollo, you did it again.” Evanthe said as she placed pressure on my back “Do you feel it?” She asked.

I nodded my head and looked back down the scope. “Yes, ok. It feels unnatural to keep myself in this position, but I think I can manage. Let go again. let me see if I can find it on my own.”

Returning to a neutral position, I then followed the steps, avoiding my own instincts as they were clearly wrong and after a few steps I heard from behind me. “Very good! I knew you could do it! Now all you need to do is line up the shot and fire.” Evanthe said excited

I also decided to aim for something close range for this rifle at five hundred meters instead of eight. I shouldn’t be trying to compare myself to a highly trained sniper and trying to match their accuracy at distance.

Allowing myself to not attempt to overachieve, I aimed for my target and breathed in deep before exhaling slowly. I then took the shot and smiled as I watched the bullet hit just shy of bullseye.

Evanthe put down her range finder and clapped excitedly for me. “You did it! Well done Apollo! Now consistency is key. Keep shooting until you have no ammunition left.”

“Any chance I can fire my own bullets instead of the pre-builds? I want to feel the difference.” I asked, and a male voice responded directly to my left.

Lying by my side, Fergus spoke looking towards my target. “At this range? That is a no go pal, you will blow straight through the target with those fiery beauties you have. Plus this gun isn’t suitable for custom ammo. Just get used to aiming for now. Though you are picking up fast from what I was observing. Evanthe, head back to your gun. I’ll take it from here.”

Evanthe opened her mouth to say something, but her thoughts became a little indecent as she was enjoying touching Apollo’s muscles and hastily returned back to her stall.

“She’s a good lass. A little quiet. I’m glad you have made an effort to include her in shit. It’s better seeing her happy instead of in the corner reading her comic books mumbling to herself.” Fergus said as he twiddled with the rangefinder on my gun.

I nodded as I reloaded my ammo into the chamber. “Yeah, I like her too. It’s nice having so many friends. I haven’t had any till this year.” I replied honestly.

Fergus then went silent as I aimed and took my shot, it went slightly to the right for some reason and I knew it wasn’t the wind.

“Your leg was a little wonky; It didn’t help in recoil management. Try this.” He then pushed up against my shoe with his boot till I was once again in an odd position.

“Got it.” I replied simply and began reloading as he began speaking.

“So, I heard through the red haired boast vine that you were picked for the special combat training? Kudos to you. Was wondering if I could try you out in a spar after class? Help me work out my old bones? Don’t worry, I’m not as strong as Valerica, though from what I hear, you can take a walloping from her.”

I paused my setting up from the next shot and stared directly into his augmented eye. “You want to fight me? Sure, I would be glad to. I need to expand my repertoire of opponents after all.”

Fergus then chuckled. “Oh you melee types scare the shit out of me at times. Most of my life, when someone asks me to fight, I stay stoic, but am secretly shitting myself haha. It still boggles my mind that in the special forces, you lot actually die the least despite getting into the thick and bloody. Reset. You have lost your balance.” He said changing the topic back to my sniping.

As I reset as he requested and we were on topic, I asked. “From what I have heard about you, surely you must have gotten into a few melee’s yourself during your career?”

Fergus nodded his head. “Aye lad, that I have, but considering my role in counter spec ops, being in melee meant shit had hit the fan and well.” He raised up his metal arm and pointed at the scars around his green eye to make three impactful points.

“Still, I can hold my own or I’d be a lot more metal than flesh at this point. Posture is good, you are a quick learner. Take your shot.”

I then took my next shot. I was in line, but a little high. I knew that was just human error on my part this time and got right back into reloading my gun and Fergus kept up the current trend.

“So, I also brought up your special training for another reason. You might not have been aware, but once you are chosen for that, you are waved off the Psionic combat basics class. And with your current mode of operation, I am assuming you are taking Janine to classes she wants to attend, and if you go to the normal class now, it would raise suspicion, so I have an alternative.”

I turned away from my gun and fully turned my attention to Fergus in an attempt to read his intentions. To which he just nodded in praise. “Good. Very good. Always be alert even towards your teachers. Don’t worry, I get what you are doing and honestly? I find it incredibly commendable, though others definitely wouldn’t, should they find out. So my offer is, I have taken over one of the basic classes. I can make it so Janine can attend, wearing whatever gear she has to keep herself covered. That way you don’t have to bully a bunch of less powerful lads and lasses for a few hours every week. What do you say?”

I looked at the man for several seconds, taking in every microcosm of his face for anything suspicious. “Why?” Is all I could come up. With. A simple question, but Judging from Fergus’ nod, one he understood.

“I’m not too sure about that myself? I suppose you could say I like the underdog. That Sepiida of yours is something special and like I told you last week, I don’t squander talent. She may be alien, but Sepiida are allies and the males already serve in the military. I don’t see why I shouldn’t treat Janine any different? Though if you want a simple answer maybe I have just gotten soft with age? So, does it sound like a plan?”

I smiled at Fergus, he was a good dude, but. “While I appreciate you coming to me with this plan of yours, at the end of the day, Janine is her own person. You need her consent not mine. She might be bound to me by law, but she isn’t my slave.

Fergus patted me on the shoulder. “Good answer. Truth is, I already asked her and she said yes, but told me to come get your opinion on it. Seems you both value each other dearly. Can’t say I don’t envy that. Alright, I will go discuss it with her a bit more. Keep up your shots, you are improving each time. Not going to lie, it’s actually quite scary.”

…

About forty minutes later, I was brought out of my shooting by a hand on my shoulder. It was Mindy. “Hi Apollo, just thought I’d say bye. I have to run to my next class. Good luck with your fight with the teacher. I am rooting for you!”

“What? Oh, um… Thanks? Talk later, ok?” I said, a bit confused as I had locked in just shooting my weapon for so long that I only realised what she meant after I stood up.

“Oh, right.” I reminded myself and began limbering myself up. Fergus must have mentioned it to her. It wasn’t a big deal anyway, it was just a spar… Or so I thought.

…

Arriving at the club building to put my gun away, a crowd of classmates had gathered around. A large bald man wearing no shirt asked. “Are you the one fighting the teacher? Hmm, tall, good muscle structure, though still a bit skinny. I think he has a shot.”

“It’s not a fight, just a spar, now excuse me, I have to return this.” The gun was then snatched out of my hands and carried away by someone.

“No running away! We want to see blood!” A woman yelled, prompting me to look at her confused.

“Wait, you are all watching the spar?” I asked, which prompted a wave of laughter from everyone present like I had just told the funniest joke of all time.

“Are you kidding? There is no greater past time than watching arrogant first years get their asses handed to them after challenging a teacher. I am excited to watch that face turn bloody.”

‘Jeez…’ I couldn’t help but think at that remark, though I felt the need to correct the crowd’s confusion.

“Um, not to be a stickler, but I didn’t extend a challenge to Fergus, he asked me to spar and I agreed…And why have you all stopped breathing?”

Creation is hard, cheer me up!
