Chapter 637: Out Of The Question
On my way towards my destination. I ran into Valerica.
“Ah, Apollo, I was just coming to find you, I-”
*Yoink*
I picked Valerica up and continued running towards my destination, she out of everyone deserved to know what was happening. I ignored Valerica’s laughing and then protest as I ran and I eventually made my way to Millie’s.
Upon our arrival, the guards stationed outside were currently busy, as they were holding down a man that was screaming and howling as he tried to break free of their grasp. I put Valerica down and moved closer to investigate.
One of the guards spotted my approach and on reflex moved for her weapon, but upon realising who I was, stopped. “Ah, Mr Lambdason. Good timing. You can now see why we were on edge the first time we met, here is what usually happens to men upon seeing Millie.
I walked around the guards to see the man’s face and it was a sight. The man’s eyes were bloodshot, his gaze fixed towards the bakery. His mouth was practically foaming as he continually struggled to break free. He looked like a rage zombie and with the knowledge of what his goal was if he broke free… ‘No wonder Millie is as scared as she is.’
“Do you want me to knock him out?” I asked the guards. Which I got a strained nod as they were clearly struggling with just keeping the man down
With their go ahead, I used my telepathy offensively, which was a rarity for me, and began probing at the man’s Mindspace. I had a feeling that with his mind currently so occupied on its current target, that I wouldn’t have even needed to massage through his Mindspace like this and could have brute forced it, but I stuck with what I knew, I didn’t want to harm the man after all.
It took a minute or so, but after I made it inside. I sent out a light pulse of neutral Psionic energy through his Mindspace. Just enough to rattle his consciousness without causing any injury.
As I returned my attention back to his body, I opened my eyes and the guards were finally restraining him. “Bald bastards, why are they all freakishly strong?”
One of the guards then turned to me. “Thank you. I will take the man to the cells now. Millie is just inside, I think seeing a couple of friendly faces will do her some good.” I nodded at the woman, grabbed Valerica by the hand and walked inside.
…
Millie peered from the kitchen hearing the door open. Upon seeing who was here she immediately felt safe again. “Apollo, Valerica! I am so glad to see you right now.”
Valerica strode forward and gave the woman a hug. “Hey, you. Apollo just took care of the guy that just saw you. Everything is ok now.” The two hugged in silence for a moment as Valerica’s maternal instincts kicked in and began rubbing Millie’s back.
“So, what brings you here Valerica? Do you want some macarons?” Millie asked, prompting Valerica to end the hug. “Yes, of course. But that is not why I am here. My son just abducted me and ran with me on his shoulder to here. So you should be asking him why I am here.”
…
Both of the women then looked directly at me. “I think we should all take a seat. I have news.”
The two women looked between one another curiously and then all three of us made our way to a table. Both could feel the awkward tension coming off me so they stayed silent until I began.
“*Sigh* So, I was doing tests in my lab earlier on, checking DNA of all the bloods I have been donated so far. Everything was going how I had planned until I came across a rather baffling revelation when studying your blood Millie.”
Millie gulped, suspecting where this might be going.
“So, as I have made it clear. I have genetically enhanced myself to a serious degree. To a point you could say I barely register as human anymore, but that just stays between us. Because of this, any DNA I have should not have similarities with pretty much any other human except those I am closely related to.”
I took a deep breath as I couldn’t believe what I was about to say.
“Millie, we share 4% of our DNA. That might not sound like a lot, because that is usually second cousin level among none enhanced people. However, considering what I just said. You are more likely to be my grandmother, my aunt or my half sister. I know that sounds utterly crazy, but-
“I am your grandmother.”
The words stunned the room silent. Valerica’s eyes went wide in shock and fear as she pulled her chair closer to me and held onto my arm tightly.
“I knew it the day we met.” Millie continued. “Call it intuition, but I just knew that you were my daughter’s son. Your immunity to my power explains it all. I thought I lost my baby entirely, but here you are. A part of her, returned to me. I knew it. I just knew it.”
Millie began tearing up and was doing her best to compose herself, meanwhile Valerica had gone sickly pale. I had an inkling at why she had turned that colour, her son had just found a member of his birth family. As an adoptive mother, she must be feeling something.
To ease her mind, I forwent my rule about invading loved ones’ minds with my Telepathy and began obviously pressing up against her Mindspace. While Valerica didn’t have a powerful Mindspace she knew enough to know what was happening and allowed my tendril inside after locating the source.
The moment she did. I showered her with a myriad of emotions. Experiencing the raw unfiltered way I felt about her, her paleness retreated and instead she simply nestled upon my shoulder and smiled up at me before she simply continued to listen as her son have his moment.
“Judging from your tears, I think I know what the answer to this question is going to be, but I will ask all the same. I never, ever expected to meet anyone from my birth family. I thought them all dead. And even if they weren’t. You aren’t. The statistical improbability alone of actually finding you and verifying that we are related is just mind boggling to think about. Literally. It’s borderline impossible that this has happened. Sorry, I digress. Basically, I never expected to have a relationship with my birth family, but I am open to one, considering I genuinely like you. So I suppose my question is, do you want a relationship with me?”
For some reason, even with her tears, I was expecting her to say no, or she needed time to think, so when she suddenly moved extremely fast and I was brought into a hug, I was stunned for a moment before hugging back.
“What kind of a question is that? We are family! Of course we are having a relationship. Oh sweet boy. However, there are going to be some ground rules. Most importantly, you never call me grandma. Ever. I don’t need a reminder of how old I am. You can call me just my name, or if you want, I could adopt you and we can be a real fam-
“OUT OF THE QUESTION!” Valerica yelled with the fury of a thousand storms, forcing Millie to take a few steps back in shock. “Let’s get one thing straight right now Millie. You may be related to my baby. But he is MY BABY! Mine. No talk of adoption. Out. Of . The . Question.”
I calmly took Valerica’s hand into my own and pulled her onto my lap and began stroking her hair before whispering a promise in her ear that calmed her down immediately, but her eyes were still sending warning signals towards Millie.
I then smiled at Millie and replied to her request. “Sure, I have no problem with that. Honestly, I am kind of relieved you said it. We are both adults after all who have just realised they are related. Grandma and grandson are too affectionate as things currently stand. So how about we forgo titles. We aren’t that. We will just call ourselves related and leave it at that?”
Millie smiled hearing the proposition. “That works perfectly for me Apollo. Just knowing you are alive and healthy and are my family is more than I need
…
While Apollo began to chat with his newly found kin, Onyx was delighted. While yes, she was happy Apollo was happy, it was not the reason she had a wicked grin on her face. She now finally had access to Apollo’s kin. One of his unique bloodline… She and, as a result, the hive, might finally get more information about Apollo’s mysterious self. The restricted section of his Mindspace, the reason why he was aware at birth. And many many more mysteries about their mate were possibly all there… In that female human…
