Capítulo 1511: A Real Job?

A customer walked into the Alchemy Hall, and the clerk nudged Karl to remind him that this was his job until his punishment was over.

“Greetings and welcome to the … Alchemy Hall. Almost welcomed them to the Guild Shop out of habit. What can I have them find for you?” Karl asked.

The Immortal gave him a disgusted look and placed the list on the counter.

Karl watched as the price of the request appeared on the cash register screen, as well as availability. This job was much easier than he had expected. It was just the part where everyone looked down on you for being on punishment detail, that would get to people.

“Alright, everything is in stock except the ice lotus blossoms. We have dried and powdered, but not fresh.”

“Don’t give me that bullshit, convict. Go get me the fresh flowers.”

“Certainly. The estimated delivery time is seventeen years, would you like to wait here, or have them delivered to your dormitory?”

The man blinked slowly, processing the absurd response that Karl had given him.

The Hall actually had the fresh flowers, but only one, and he had requested five. But if Karl grew the flowers himself, he could certainly have enough at the proper quality by the time that the seventeen-year quote was up.

Always under promise and overdeliver. Business 101, Davis had taught him that just after he started running the Drodh Guild House.

“How many fresh flowers do you have,” the customer demanded.

“One flower fresh. Would you like one fresh and four dried?”

“Just give me the fresh flower and order the others.”

“Understood, Sir. Your total will be sixty-two Clan Credits, or equivalent.”

“Do you not understand discounts for seniors. I’m not paying more than fifty for that.”

Karl nodded with a smile on his face. “Understood, customer. We can certainly reduce quantities to suit your budget.”

The other two cashiers were trying not to laugh, or to point out that there really was a button on the register to apply a discount based on seniority of the member making the purchase.

Karl was cruising directly to a fight on his first day that would get him another fifty hours at the counter, and they were all about it.

Mostly because he was actually good at his punishment duties.

The runner with the resources was waiting behind the door, unwilling to come out and get involved in the fight. They were mortal, there was no ending here that didn’t end up with them in pain if they went outside.

“Fine, I will take it up with Elder Socrate when I see him next.”

The man extended his hand with a bag in it, and Karl reached to take it from him.

The Immortal’s fist flashed forward, slamming into the Eternal Lightning barrier in front of Karl’s face faster than he could react. But he was only a split second late, and he took the bag out of the customer’s hand as the startled Immortal tried to understand why Karl didn’t fly across the room.

“According to the counter, this collection of resources is worth a total of sixty-eight credits. Would you like to remove items, or have the excess credited to your account?”

The man growled, and Karl tossed the bag to one of the other cashiers.

The Immortal didn’t even flinch at the shock from Eternal Lightning as he grabbed Karl by the vest.

“You listen to me, you little shit…”

“No, I think that you are the one with a misunderstanding. I will happily accept a challenge, but there is zero chance that you win that fight. This humble convict recommends that you accept your purchase, and inform the ladies if you would like credits or if you would prefer to have items returned from your payment.”

Karl’s feet were dangling off the ground, but there was zero fear in his voice. The clerks were mildly horrified at his attitude. That was not how you earned a peaceful life here in the New Home Merchant Clan. But if Karl was angling to become an early entry Elder, the moment that he reached the Ascendant State, this was likely the proper way to establish his authority.

A painful path that would lead to multiple conflicts with every other Elder, but the only way that would get him the rank in less than three centuries.

“Put it on my account and give me my order,” the Immortal relented.

The runner came out with the supplies, and the man snatched it from her, then stomped out of the Alchemy Hall.

“Are you sure that you know what you’re doing?” The teen girl asked.

Karl patted her head. “No worries. The actual power difference between Spirit Immortals and Void Immortals isn’t that large. Not more than two to three times the average. I know what targets I can’t deal with.”

The cashiers stared at Karl’s hand.

That was the second time that they had seen him pat a bunny on the head, and he didn’t even seem to notice that he was doing it. But the runner was blushing before she retreated into her waiting room for the next order.

A group of Void Rank Immortals came in just after the runner vanished, and formed an orderly line.

“Welcome to the Alchemy Hall. What can I get for you today?”

The Immortal tossed his sheet and a bag of coins on the counter, and Karl rang the order in.

“Everything is here. Ten percent frequent customer discount brings you to eight credits or equivalent.”

He opened the bag, and found that it was full of Immortal Grade Elemental stones. The counter said that they were worth two credits each, so Karl picked the top four and passed the bag back.

“Your order will be here momentarily, here is your change. If the next in line would like to order, I will help you right away.”

Karl moved from booth to booth so that the customers didn’t need to move from their spot as they waited, and the cashiers settled comfortably into chairs behind the counter.

Having a capable helper who couldn’t slack without risking having his recorded time refused was the greatest thing that had happened to them this year.
