Chapter 923: An Offer – 923

“Well I’m not.” Fa Zhu said. “And even if I was, I still don’t want to serve someone like a prince.”

“Which is exactly why I want you. Name your price.” The prince said.

“I’m really not interested in money.” Fa Zhu said.

“Even better. I have anything you could want at my fingertips. Do you want power, knowledge, women?”

Fa Zhu was about to reject him again, but now that he thought about it, it was quite difficult to practice magic even in his home. If he had a courtyard or something, he could practice his magic in a much wider range.

“If you can get me a courtyard and… access to some intelligent people, we could work things out.” Fa Zhu said.

“Great, I’ll have a courtyard reserved for you tomorrow, but you’ll pay for it by working for me. In addition, you will naturally get wages, and I can get you access to the most intelligent people in the kingdom. After all, they are my tutors.”

Fa Zhu nodded. “Then let’s talk about this job.”

“It is a position that combines a personal servant job and a bodyguard job. Don’t worry, the servant stuff is just running important errands or other things. You don’t have to cook for me or bathe me. The bodyguard job is equally important, and before you can officially start, you need to undergo a bit of training within the Royal Guards. After that, it will be smooth sailing. But if you aren’t willing to risk your life, we can end this conversation here. This pays better than almost any other job in the world, but your life will be in danger every day. Can you handle that?”

Fa Zhu snorted to himself inside. Unless someone aimed a ballista directly at him, he would be completely fine even with a passive shield active.

“I can accept that.”

The prince nodded. “We will see. You begin your training in the morning. Go ahead and pack your stuff. The courtyard will be ready in the morning. The instructor will take you there.”

Fa Zhu nodded. He didn’t take long to pack as he didn’t have much. What he did fit in a few bags.

He slept, and not long after he woke up, he heard a knock at the door.

Opening it, he saw the instructor.

“Let’s go whenever you’re ready.” The instructor said.

“I’m ready now.” Fa Zhu responded.

They walked towards the center of the city. Close to the palace, they stopped at a house in a very nice residential district. Working at the library, Fa Zhu never would have been able to live here, even if he worked for a thousand years.

This house alone was surely worth his yearly salary a week.

And it was not even close to the biggest house. It was relatively small, but gave him absolute privacy, and was still bigger than his old house, both measuring the yard part of the courtyard and the inside parts of the courtyard.

“This place is yours from now on. Be at the palace gates in an hour.” The instructor said before leaving.

Fa Zhu unpacked the small amount of things he had, and after waiting a bit, he left for the palace.

He arrived a bit early, but the instructor was already there.

“I set aside my normal teachings for today so we can have a one on one. This will be the only time this happens in the morning. You are free to request guidance from me once my general teaching duties are over. Now come.”

He walked towards the two guards on the gate.

“These two are honorable guards I once trained. Not everyone can represent the Royal Palace by guarding it. These two are your seniors. Now take this. It will be your identification for entry.”

He handed Fa Zhu a small card.

Fa Zhu showed it to the guards, who nodded. He and the instructor walked through the gate, and after a three minute walk, arrived at a small training ground. Nearby, he could hear shouts and grunts, as well as clashing metal.

“Take this.” The instructor said, tossing him a wooden sword.

Fa Zhu took it and swung it a few times to get used to it.

“Ready?” The instructor asked.

Fa Zhu nodded.

The instructor stepped forward, attacking.

Fa Zhu ducked and swung his sword up. The instructor kicked his arm away and swung down.

Fa Zhu rolled to the side and shot up, attempting to pierce the instructor.

The instructor slashed out, the forces of their sword colliding. Fa Zhu’s sword was deflected upwards, but the instructor’s sword continued straight.

Fa Zhu dropped the sword, and in an instinctual manner, kicked out while dodging.

The instructor was surprised, but he held his arm up to his head, blocking the kick. He grabbed Fa Zhu’s leg and tried to swing him with it.

Fa Zhu jumped up, kicking out with his free leg. For such an average looking, on the skinnier side person, his kick carried a lot of force.

The instructor was forced to let go.

The instructor’s demeanor changed. He grabbed his sword and launched forward. Fa Zhu could barely react as the sword smacked against his head.

It felt like no matter which way he dodged, the result would be the same.

He was nearly knocked unconscious as he fell.

The instructor stood nearby. “You are already good enough at fighting to protect the prince, but since I have you for a month, I might as well make you even better. With your build, a sword isn’t the best weapon. Try out a dagger. I’ll make you an assassin type fighter.”

Fa Zhu heard these words and eventually stood up. He resisted casting a fireball at the instructor’s head with all of his might.

Fa Zhu spent the next month learning how to use his speed and flexibility to his advantage. He also learned how to wield a dagger.

When the month was over, he finally saw the prince again.

“Tomorrow morning, you can come straight to my room. Have one of the servants guide you.”
