Chapter 441: Devon’s just so responsible, that’s all
“Alice,” Devon’s voice suddenly rang out, and she turned to find him behind her.
Did he just teleport into their house?
He held an expression of relief as he hurried to hug her.
“You’re finally back.”
“Ah, yes, yes,” she said, tapping his arm because he was hugging her neck to the point of suffocation.
As soon as he noticed it, he let go of her.
“Oh, I’m sorry. That was reckless of me,” he said, but smiled happily as he ruffled her hair. “I missed you a lot.”
Alice paused. That was pretty direct.
“I’ve also seen all you’ve been up to. You’re really amazing,” he said, and caught sight of Mark. “Ah, Mark. How have you been?”
“I’ve been well, but can you not teleport into my house without permission next time?” Mark asked, clicking his tongue as he stared at the mud on the floor.
Where had he been all along for him to create such a mess?
“Just look at what you did to the floor.” He folded his arms, and Devon turned his head.
He felt he had been a little too clumsy and reckless, so he bowed his head in guilt.
“I’ll apologize for that too. I was so excited when Damian told me you had come back already,” he said, and Alice tilted her head.
“Damian? How did he know?” she asked.
“Ah, your friends have a group chat where they communicate, and Diane told them about a sleepover party here. Anyway, when I heard you were back, I came to confirm it and…”
“Well, you’ve seen me and confirmed it’s true,” Alice said, and then faked a cough. “And strangled me too.”
“Sorry,” he humbly said, and she laughed. When he acted like that, he reminded her of Damian a lot.
Damian… how has he been anyway?
Guess she’d find that out when they came over.
She did act like she didn’t like the idea, but she was looking forward to seeing everyone. Just how much must they have grown in this time?
Clarissa must’ve gotten the hang of her S-class status by now, and the others were probably trying to keep up so they wouldn’t fall behind.
Gosh, she couldn’t wait to see those little munchkins who kept surrounding her and taking up her sleeping time. They grow up so fast, she thought.
She saw Devon pick up a mop and begin cleaning up his mess.
He was so responsible that she could imagine him in a maid’s outfit, helping out with the cleaning in the house.
But she quickly snapped out of it. To think she would picture that on the guild master of the Snow Guild. She was so bold indeed.
She chuckled.
They saw this and stared at her.
“What’s so funny, Alice?” Mark asked, and she noticed she had chuckled a little too loudly.
“Well, nothing in particular,” she said, rolling her eyes away to avoid spilling it out in guilt. “Devon is just so responsible, that’s all.”
Hearing this, Devon felt touched.
“I’m also responsible,” Mark said, and she laughed.
“Of course. Only someone as responsible as you can put up with my appetite after all.” She raised her leg from the floor and folded her arms on top. “Anyway, I think I should thank you. You’ve been doing so much for me.”
Mark would naturally be happy to hear this, but he didn’t know… He felt that those words were similar to parting words.
She… wasn’t going to move out, was she?
Now that the chairman knew she was his biological granddaughter, he might want to take her back and…
The thought ached his heart.
“I’m thankful to be of service to you anytime,” he said, smiling at her, and she equally smiled, resting her head on her folded arms.
Devon watched this. The atmosphere felt a bit odd.
He could understand the soft look in Mark’s eyes, but there was a little difference compared to before.
Was he just overthinking it?
Well, he was just glad Alice was back.
During Alice’s absence, he took time to work on himself and improve his skills. Even if he knew he was still a long shot from her, he could proudly say he had improved a lot and wouldn’t be easily bested as he was in the past when he came in contact with that demon.
And he didn’t just train either.
He reflected on his feelings towards Alice. He originally felt he liked her. She was his brother’s age, and yet he held romantic feelings for her.
He, of course, did not plan to act on them or approach her concerning it, but it was harder to keep it down than he thought. He felt jealousy, envy, and other sorts of emotions one feels when they see the girl they like with another man.
Still, he tried not to be too petty and kept his feelings to himself.
He had some greedy thoughts pushing him to approach Alice and claim her lips, at least. He would get a moment of satisfaction, even if he ended up being hated.
But the weight of her hating him crushed those greedy feelings. He knew he wouldn’t be able to handle having her stare at him in hate, and he was right.
He would rather have her smile at him.
Then, he noticed that Damian was also acting odd.
He quickly realized that he had a crush on someone and often teased him about it, but when he put two and two together, who Damian might have a crush on, he came to one conclusion.
And the responsibility of an older brother opened his eyes to see that he was definitely not doing himself any good by liking someone as young as Alice.
Besides, she might decide to choose a partner among her peers, and Damian was among her peers.
To avoid having to hate or feel jealous of his younger brother, he decided to give up on his feelings.
Of course, that was what he told himself, and he was ready to abide by it.
But the moment he called out to Alice and she turned her face to look at him, the sight of her face made his heart pound once again.
He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t get rid of his feelings as easily as he meant to.
But that didn’t mean he planned to act on them either.
Let’s just see how things go, he told himself.
Soon after, the doorbell rang, and Mark went to open the door.
“Is it true?” He saw the white-haired girl who had followed Alice around a lot in the past. “Is Alice here?”
Her face was a little flushed, and she looked out of breath, as if she had run for a while, but despite that, there was not a drop of sweat on her body.
If he remembered correctly, she had the ice attribute.
“Yes, she’s here,” he said, and Clarissa’s heart brightened. “You can come in.” He stepped aside, and she hurried in, using her eyes to look for Alice, and found her lounging on the couch with a magazine in her hand.
“Oh, Clarissa?” She spotted her from the bottom of the magazine.
Clarissa simply stood there, unable to utter a word because she felt a little flustered and had not even thought of what to say before heading here.
As soon as she saw the message Diane dropped, she hurried here right away.
She didn’t even enter a taxi because she felt this was another good way to exercise.
She ran the whole distance and was a bit out of breath, but that didn’t matter.
She was seeing Alice after so long.
She… she missed her.
Her motivation, her goal… her progress, it all circled around this girl, and she looked up to her so much that thinking of her past behavior often made her flush in bitter embarrassment.
“Alice,” Clarissa called softly, her heart racing. “You’re here.”
What was she even saying? She couldn’t bring out the words she wanted to say to her all this time and was rather awkward.
“And you’re here as well,” Alice added. “Are you here for the sleepover? But it’s kind of early.”
Clarissa tilted her head, confused.
“Sleepover?”
“Well, yeah. Diane wanted you guys to come over for a sleepover. That’s what she dropped in the group, I think.”
Clarissa’s face began to heat up, and Alice swore she could see steam trailing up her head.
Why? Did she not come with anything?
Clarissa, who had only seen the message that Alice was back and was at home, did not bother to look at the rest of the message before taking to her heels.
“Haa,” she turned away, embarrassed. “I feel so ashamed.”
Alice, who didn’t get it at first, began to laugh as she understood that Clarissa came empty-handed. And it looked like she rushed here too.
“I… I’ll head back and come back right away,” she said, turning to the door and walking like a dysfunctional robot with her right leg and right hand moving at the same time.
Alice saw this and laughed some more.
She had become even funnier in the time she wasn’t around.
Clarissa heard her laughing and then turned to glance over her shoulder.
“I…” She finally picked up the courage to speak. “I’m glad you’re back.”
With that, she hurried out, after bowing in apology to Mark.
Alice giggled.
“Who was that?” Devon asked as he walked out from the kitchen, cleaning his hands, and Alice relaxed back on the couch.
“Well, a cute and funny girl,” she said, and the two who heard this thought at the same time,
‘That somehow sounds like you’re describing yourself.’
