Chapter 1947: Cult of Ouroboros
Bael turned toward Amon, and immediately a deep frown creased his flawless, marble-like features.
“The power of the Scarlet King and his abilities are overwhelming — that is something everybody knows. However…” His crimson eyes narrowed, the glow in them flickering with a note of warning. “I still believe you should not have brought him here.”
Amon shook his head slowly, the faintest of sighs escaping him.
“Ahhh, why must you always be so stubborn? I have already told you — just the two of us will not be able to advance any further. And if we fail now, it will be another five hundred thousand years before we gather enough energy to open the portal again.”
“An explanation. Now.”
Cain’s voice cut through the chamber like the swing of a divine blade, echoing off the walls with a force that made the entire underground space tremble. The pressure of his will pressed down on both brothers, leaving no doubt that he was done being kept in the dark.
The mirth between Amon and Bael vanished instantly. Their bodies shifted subtly, shoulders squaring, expressions turning grave. They knew exactly who they were facing — the Scarlet King, the man who had slain two Archdeities in less than five moves and destroyed the body of another. In front of someone like him, the smallest mistake could become fatal.
Amon took in a slow, deliberate breath before speaking, his tone low but steady.
“As you already know, Bael and I are brothers. While we have long disguised our relationship, making it seem as though we are locked in perpetual battle, the truth is that it has all been a carefully maintained illusion. Our so-called ‘war’ is nothing more than a smokescreen to keep control over the Finger of Death and the Finger of Life.”
Cain inclined his head slightly. That part, he had already deduced. By masking their alliance as a bitter feud, the brothers ensured that no one dared intervene. Most observers, thinking it foolish to get caught between such an endless war, simply left them to “kill each other” in peace.
But that still didn’t explain what this place was, or why he had been brought here.
Amon continued, his voice steady but with an undercurrent of weight.
“The Finger of Death and the Finger of Life are not mere monuments. They are colossal conduits — lightning rods, if you will — though they do not gather lightning. Instead, they absorb and store two distinct and opposite energies: the concentrated death aura and the pure life aura. That is why I keep my continent drenched in constant carnage and bloodshed… and why my brother ensures his own is overflowing with growth, vitality, and flourishing life.”
He gestured toward the massive stone circle at the center of the chamber, its strange inscriptions pulsing faintly with power.
“All the energy drawn in charges the portal you see before you — a portal that leads to the hidden stronghold of a force from the First Era… the Cult of Ouroboros.”
Cain’s eyes widened. His gaze locked onto the portal with sudden, consuming interest. The superpowers of the First Era — the so-called Forgotten Era — were beings of power unmatched by anything in the current age. Their forces might have reached the very peak of the Third Realm, attaining the rank of Alpha-Omega Overgod. In the Crimson World, such beings could exist beyond the reach of time itself, living forever without the aid of Eternal Kingdoms.
A hunger stirred in him, but only for a moment. His greed was swiftly replaced by focus — and suspicion. His eyes sharpened as he regarded the brothers.
“Why would you share such a secret with me? Are you not afraid I might take it for myself?”
Bael’s fists clenched instantly, golden fissures flaring with light as divine strength surged through him. But Amon’s expression remained calm, composed.
“I was concerned about that before. However, after what happened in the ocean, I believe that you need us just as much as we might need you.”
Cain studied them for a long moment before finally giving a slow, measured nod. The crushing force of his aura eased, turning from oppressive to almost serene.
“Indeed. I require warriors who will follow me into battle without hesitation. But I will not act blindly. Tell me — exactly what is it you need from me?”
Amon’s posture loosened, relief passing briefly over his features before he allowed a smile to form.
“The formations and the artificial mind that controls this stronghold are still active. Forcing our way in is impossible. But there is another way — a method by which beings like us, Third Realm lifeforms who are not members of the Cult, may gain access to its treasures and wonders. That way… is the Petitioners’ Path.”
Cain did not speak, but the intensity in his gaze urged Amon to continue.
“The Petitioners’ Path extends from the outer gate all the way to what we believe is the heart of the stronghold. However, to advance, one must endure trial after trial, each one more difficult than the last. Even after countless attempts, Bael and I have been stopped at the Third Ring. No matter what we tried, we could not push further. That is why I brought you here. Upon success, each victor has the right to bring two others with them — and thus, all three of us could reach the Fourth Ring.”
At last, everything fell into place. They needed his strength to break through the barrier that had stopped them for so long. The opportunity was also beneficial for him. A realm abandoned by a First Era superpower would undoubtedly be filled with relics and knowledge of immeasurable value.
Still, caution tempered his interest.
“What kind of trial would I face in the Petitioners’ Path?”
He was not afraid, but entering into a reckless fight now would be unwise. If he emerged gravely wounded, Azazel could exploit the weakness — and Cain was not one to hand his enemies such opportunities.
