Chapter 426: A perfect peace.

Epilogue

Lyla

A year later

I wandered through the hallways of the White Moon pack house, searching for Ramsey.

The afternoon sun streamed through the tall windows, casting everything in that golden light that made even the most ordinary moments feel magical.

The soft murmur of voices led me to the nursery, and I paused at the partially open door to peek inside. What I saw made my heart swell with such overwhelming love that I had to press my hand to my chest to contain it.

Ramsey was stretched out in the oversized rocking chair we’d specially ordered, his shirt unbuttoned, with tiny Charmaine sleeping peacefully against his chest, her red-blonde curls catching the afternoon light.

In the matching chair beside him, Lenny held little Calen with the same gentle care, his brown hair so much like my own fanned across Lenny’s broad chest as he dozed.

Both men were speaking in hushed tones about pack security protocols, but their voices carried the soft cadence people naturally adopted around sleeping babies. It was such a perfectly domestic scene that I couldn’t bear to interrupt it.

I smiled and quietly closed the door, leaning against the wall in the hallway as a wave of gratitude washed over me.

One year. Twelve months since that nightmare had ended, since we’d won our freedom at a cost I still couldn’t quite remember but felt in the hollow spaces of my heart. A year of peace so profound it sometimes felt like a dream I might wake up from.

Life had settled into my routine as a Luna Leader, a mum, a lover and of course a best friend. Those dark months when danger lurked around every corner were a memory I wish I could erase forever.

Notwithstanding, our world had found its balance again, stronger perhaps for having faced its greatest threat and survived.

Clarissa had grown into her role as Alpha with a grace and authority that would have made our father proud. The southern packs followed her leadership without question now, and her influence had spread far beyond our regional boundaries. She’d implemented new policies for inter-pack cooperation, established trade agreements that benefited everyone, and created a council system that gave smaller packs a voice in larger decisions.

And then there was her relationship with Lenny – something that had surprised everyone except perhaps the two of them.

They’d fallen head over heels for each other to the point that it was impossible to believe until you catch them on a random afternoon making love to each other with reckless abandon.

I think their arrangement is cute, too. Neither wanted marriage, but both treasured their independence, yet they were devoted to each other in a way that defied every traditional label.

The fact that Clarissa was currently five months pregnant with Lenny’s child was just the beautiful irony of fate. Lenny, who had sworn off serious commitment and declared he’d never father children, was absolutely besotted with the idea of becoming a father for the seventh time.

He’d already started construction on a nursery at White Moon since Rissa had agreed she would raise the child at White Moon for a year.

As to whether Lenny would move over to Blue Ridge, no one knows, but they seem to make it work regardless.

“We like our freedom,” Clarissa had told me just last week, her hand resting on her growing belly. “But we love each other more. Marriage is just a piece of paper. What we have is so much deeper than ceremony.”

And it was. Anyone could see the way they looked at each other, the way Lenny’s entire face transformed when Clarissa walked into a room, the way she unconsciously sought him out in any gathering.

The supernatural world had also found a balance. After the destruction of Xander’s legacy, the various species had chosen to withdraw more completely from human affairs.

It wasn’t isolation – we still maintained necessary diplomatic and economic connections – but there was a conscious decision to preserve our own cultures and values rather than constantly adapting to human expectations.

The Hollow Kin had relocated their primary operations to White Mountain Region since it was the home of the Lycan Leader.

The change also led to the establishment of new training facilities that served all species, rather than operating in secret. Kyren, of course, retained his position as Hollow Kin leader and has grown in power.

Which brought me to perhaps the most entertaining development of the past year – watching Kyren fall completely, hopelessly in love with Circe.

Once we’d rescued her from her captors and she’d healed from her ordeal, Circe had thrown herself into working with the Hollow Kin. Her magical abilities and intelligence from her Lycan side made her invaluable for inter-species negotiations.

Still, it was her quick wit and refusal to be intimidated by Kyren’s reputation that had captured his attention.

Everyone could see what was coming except, apparently, Kyren himself.

The man who could read minds and predict enemy movements three steps ahead was blind to his own romantic feelings. He followed Circe around like a lovesick puppy while maintaining that their relationship was “purely professional.”

Circe, for her part, seemed to find his obliviousness charming. She’d taken to wearing increasingly beautiful dresses to their meetings and finding excuses to touch his arm when she talked, all while pretending not to notice the way he stared at her when he thought no one was looking.

“He’s going to propose soon,” Clarissa had predicted during her last visit. “The poor man is so gone for her that he’s started asking around for advice on courtship.”

The thought made me smile as I pushed away from the wall and continued down the hallway. Luna Vanessa had retired to the Moon Temple, raising her son there and occasionally appearing during important Pack occasions.

“Life in the Moon Temple is so much better and peaceful,” she’d confided to me the last time we saw.

Our High Priestess, Mother Jemima, was seeking to relax a lot of the laws enforced on Sigma wolves.

First, the unlawful taking of Sigma-born children from their parents and erasing their birth details had stopped. Children were now allowed to reach a certain age first before deciding whether they wanted to follow that path or not.

According to Mother Jemima, it had all been the idea of my mother, who was a High Priestess too; she said her name was Miriam, but I couldn’t remember. There were no records about her, not even a picture.

And anytime I visit the temple and walk past her statue, a profound grief would seize me.

My own life had found balance that felt like coming home after a lifetime of wandering. Ramsey and I had settled into married life with an ease that sometimes surprised me. There was no drama or grand romantic declarations, just the contentment of two people who’d found exactly where they belonged.

These days, he was focused more on taking care of our world and putting us first, and he never missed an afternoon with the twins.

About the twins, it turned out that I wasn’t carrying twin boys. One was a girl, whom we named Charmaine, and the other was a boy, whom we named Calen.

The twins had brought such joy into our lives that it sometimes felt selfish to be this happy. Charmaine, at only a few months old, was bold and curious, always reaching for things she shouldn’t touch, always trying to escape her crib to explore the world.

Calen was quieter, more observant, but with a stubborn streak that reminded me of Nathan all the time.

They were healthy and happy and growing so fast that I sometimes felt like I was trying to hold onto smoke. Each day brought discoveries, new milestones, and new reasons to marvel at the miracle of their existence.

The pack had embraced them completely, treating them like the precious gifts they were. It wasn’t uncommon to find various pack members volunteering for babysitting duty, or to discover that someone had left handmade toys or clothes on the doorstep of the pack house.

Lycans rarely gave birth to twins, so it was a strange occurrence for them.

Even the aftermath of our ordeal had worked out better than anyone could have hoped.

The shapeshifters who had infiltrated our group had left no lasting damage, and the intelligence we’d gathered about Xander’s network had helped authorities around the world dismantle similar organisations before they could cause harm.

There were still mysteries – like the necklace I’d awakened clutching, which now hung around my neck every day despite my inability to remember its origins. Sometimes I caught myself touching it absently, feeling an inexplicable sense of comfort from its presence.

But those small puzzles seemed insignificant compared to the overwhelming peace that had settled over our world. The constant vigilance, the fear of attack, ancient prophecies – all of that had lifted, leaving behind something I’d never expected to experience.

Normal life.

The simple pleasure of arguing with my husband about whose turn it was to change diapers, of constantly being on the phone with Clarissa all day, planning birthday parties and worrying about whether our children should be homeschooled or not.

I was heading toward the kitchen to start dinner when my phone rang. Circe’s name flashed on the screen, and I smiled as I answered.

“Hey, what’s—”

“HE PROPOSED! HE PROPOSED!” Circe’s voice came through the phone at such a volume that I had to hold it away from my ear, but her joy was so infectious that I found myself grinning.

“REALLY?!” I squealed back. “When? How? Tell me everything!”

And as Circe launched into what was clearly going to be a detailed recounting of Kyren’s romantic gesture, I settled into the kitchen window seat. I prepared to hear every single detail of what was undoubtedly going to be the supernatural world’s wedding of the century.

Life, I thought as my friend’s laughter bubbled through the phone, had indeed found its perfect rhythm at last.

And I genuinely hope it lasts.

On a side note: the twins were already exhibiting strange behaviours, and Luna Vanessa said that was how I was too as a child.

I don’t know if they have my Moonsinging abilities, but I wouldn’t weary myself with thoughts of that. I had a community of people who loved and would always protect me, so…

All will be well.

If you’ve read until now. Thank you so much for coming on this journey with me. On this date exactly one year ago, I started this book without any expectation.

But because of your love and support, I’ve been able to enjoy writing this book.

Maybe there might be a side story (more like an epilogue to tie off loose ends, like what happened with Gamma Caius and Cassidy, etc.)

Maybe not.

Thank you so much, and God bless you all.
