Chapter 799: Exploring the Island

“How do we land?” Eve asked as they approached the island.

Nox’s brows were furrowed as he scanned the island. He figured that approaching directly would not be ideal, as they would stick out like a sore thumb.

“We need to find a way to blend in,” he suggested, eyes narrowed.

Moments later, he spotted a white sandy beach that seemed more secluded compared to the rest. Furthermore, it was located toward the western side of the island, an area that had only a sparse number of buildings.

“Let’s head there.”

The two landed on the beach. Nox immediately sent Drake back to the taming space, then shifted his gaze toward Eve.

“Where would you hide it?” he asked.

Eve did not answer. She simply waved her hand. A dark ring lit up beneath Doombringer’s feet and slowly consumed him.

“That’s my own pocket space where I keep my undead summons,” she explained as she snapped her fingers. A similar dark ring lit up, and the wyvern emerged again.

“Wait, you do not have to tame them first?” Nox asked, slightly shocked.

The only way he could place anything in his taming space was to tame it first. Should that not be the same for anyone with a class related to summoning?

“Mine does not work like that,” she said. “I can place whatever I want inside. It is like a pocket dimension of my own. Just think of it as a mini world.”

“I see.”

“We do not have much time. Let us start moving.”

After placing Doombringer back inside, the two began trudging across the white sandy beach. As they walked, their feet sank into the sand with each step.

Nox felt a fresh breeze brush against his skin and noticed that the air tasted different, cleaner compared to any other place he had been to.

After some moments of walking, they finally reached a cobblestone street that led into the main town.

“What is the plan? Are we just going to walk around aimlessly?” Eve inquired.

“Let us get an inn first. Hopefully they use gold coins here as well,” Nox replied, rolling a gold coin between his fingers.

Fortunately for them, their attire was not much different from that of the natives, allowing them to blend in perfectly. The only thing that made them stand out was Eve’s striking red eyes.

Noticing this, the necromancer pulled a dark cap over her head and kept her gaze lowered, avoiding eye contact with anyone.

As they walked, they passed through training grounds after training grounds, each filled with people going head to head against one another.

It was a form of training, but it was so brutal that Nox wondered if they were trying to kill each other.

But more importantly.

‘Why does everyone appear so stoic?’ he thought. ‘And why are they training so seriously?’

War rarely occurred in the human domain, and with their established reputation, he strongly doubted any kingdom would be bold enough to come after them.

‘Or could it be that they are secretly preparing for something the rest of the world does not know about?’

Nox kept those thoughts to himself as they continued forward, his pace steady and unhurried.

Soon enough, the sound of waves crashing against the shore and leaves rustling in the wind faded behind them, replaced by the murmur of conversations and the scent of cooked meat and spices drifting through the air.

They had entered what seemed to be the residential side of the town.

“Inn,” Nox muttered after spotting a wooden sign hanging slightly crooked from iron chains.

The building itself was nothing fancy. Two stories tall, with wooden upper floors and windows reinforced with thick shutters. It looked sturdy and practical.

“That one should do,” he said, changing direction.

They stepped inside, and warmth immediately wrapped around them.

A fireplace crackled at the far end of the hall, while several patrons sat around rough wooden tables, either eating or quietly talking amongst themselves. The atmosphere was lively yet restrained.

Behind the counter stood a middle aged man with broad shoulders and a thick beard, polishing a mug with a cloth. His eyes lifted the moment they entered.

They lingered on the two for a second longer than usual.

Not hostile.

Just curious.

“Rooms?” the receptionist asked plainly.

“Yes,” Nox replied, stepping forward. “Two. Separate.”

The man raised a brow slightly at that but did not comment. His gaze flickered to Eve for half a second longer before returning.

“You do not look like locals,” he said casually, as if making small talk. “But then again, many are not these days.”

Nox slid a gold coin across the counter.

The man caught it mid spin, weighed it in his palm, then nodded.

“Gold works just fine,” he said. “One room on the second floor and one on the first. Meals are included.”

“That is fine,” Nox replied.

Two keys were placed on the counter.

The receptionist pushed them forward, then paused.

“Curfew bell rings at midnight,” he added. “Not mandatory, but it is best to be indoors by then.”

“Why?” Eve asked quietly, her voice slightly muffled by the cap.

The man hesitated, then shrugged.

“Island customs,” he said simply. “Enjoy your stay.”

They took the keys and headed upstairs without further questions.

Their rooms were simple but clean.

A bed, a small table, a washbasin, and a narrow window overlooking the street below.

Nox closed the door behind him and finally exhaled slowly.

He sat on the edge of the bed, elbows resting on his knees, as he contemplated what to do next.

He had come here without a proper plan in mind. Even after thinking for several minutes, nothing concrete surfaced.

‘I need to rescue him, but I need to do it in a way that they will not be able to come after him again.’

Rescuing him was not even the main issue. The real problem was shaking the pursuers off Jack’s trail.

After a quick wash and a brief rest to recover from the flight, Nox lay back for a moment, eyes closed, letting his senses stretch outward.

A few hours later, a soft knock echoed through the door.

He opened it to find Eve standing there, her cap still pulled low.

“How about we take a stroll around the city?” she suggested. “That way, we can learn more about who we are up against.”
