Capítulo 795: The old Monster
While Jack and his siblings were having a stare off, Nox calmly approached Serana, Akira, and Nyx.
He noticed that they looked slightly worn out, which made a small frown appear on his face.
Although not as strong as him, Nox knew that his friends were powerful. Seeing them in such a state made him recall Skully’s words when they first met.
When they saw him, all three girls’ eyes lit up.
“Finally,” Serana breathed out a sigh of relief.
“What’s the situation here?” Nox asked calmly.
“Those two psychos popped out of nowhere and began attacking the pets of the beast tamers.” Akira was the first to speak.
“We tried to stop them, but their strength… despite being non awakened, they are abnormally strong.” Serana said in a somewhat embarrassed voice.
Nyx remained quiet, but her fingers were clenching and unclenching repeatedly.
“It has been long since I felt this powerless.” She muttered under her breath.
“Especially that girl, she is out of her mind.” Akira cursed loudly.
Serana was in no way serene like her name suggested. She was the total opposite, wild and chaotic, even her battle style reflected that.
But she was not just chaotic. She actually had battle intelligence that could rival old monsters. She could perfectly read her opponents’ movements and knew where to attack, all without displaying even a single skill.
A deep frown appeared on Nox’s face. However, he managed to keep his emotions in check, not rushing blindly. Furthermore, it appeared that Jack was having a heart to heart reunion with his family.
“What are you doing here?” Jack asked, his voice cold and firm.
“Do not tell me you did not miss us even a bit.” Soren said, stepping forward. He then looked past Jack, his gaze settling on Nox.
“It seems you have made a new friend.”
Jack did not reply. His gaze remained cold as he asked again, “I repeat. What are you two doing here?”
“We are here for the beast tamers.” Soren smirked. “You are but a side quest.”
Jack’s eyes flashed. His thoughts were right. It was either they were here for the beast tamers or for him. It just so happened that they were here for both.
This was one of his greatest fears… that his family might one day come for him and harm those who were close to him.
For a moment, because of how smooth everything had been going, he had been naive enough to think that his family had forgotten about him.
Why did they have to show up now? When he had a new life, new friends, a kingdom that accepted him with open hands, and most importantly, a place he finally felt he belonged.
There was chaos in Jack’s head, but he knew he needed to make a decision.
‘I cannot allow that old monster to set his eyes upon them.’ he thought quietly.
His gaze flicked to Serana, to Soren, then to the ruins around them. Beast blood still dripped from broken stalls. A tamer sobbed while hugging his injured pet. Soldiers stood with clenched fists, not daring to move.
This was just two of them.
Just two.
If their father came in person…
Jack’s fingers tightened around the lightning odachi so hard his knuckles turned white.
Soren watched him with the same calm, almost bored expression that Jack hated. Serana, on the other hand, was practically bouncing on her heels, eyes shining as if this entire mess was simply a fun outing.
“Jack,” Soren said lightly, “you are thinking too hard again.”
Jack did not answer. His jaw flexed.
Nox stood slightly behind him now, his presence steady and grounding. Just knowing Nox was there helped keep Jack’s thoughts from spiraling.
Serana, Akira, and Nyx stayed a short distance away, giving them space but clearly listening.
The street was quiet, eerily quiet, despite the rubble and lingering smoke.
Nox finally broke the silence.
“Let us stop circling around it,” he said calmly. “You attacked my people. You killed my citizens’ beasts. You came into the Cromwell Kingdom without permission and created chaos in my streets. That is already one problem.”
He took a step forward.
His eyes were focused on Soren, but his words were for both siblings.
“The second problem,” Nox continued, “is that you are after one of my own.”
Soren’s lips curled faintly.
“Your own?” he repeated, amused. “That is interesting.”
“He is a citizen of Cromwell,” Nox said flatly. “He is a member of the kingdom. He fights with us. He bleeds with us. That makes him mine. Do you understand?”
The air felt heavier when he spoke that last part.
Serana tilted her head, squinting at Nox like she was measuring him for the first time.
“Brother,” she murmured, “he is kind of cool.”
“I noticed,” Soren replied.
Jack exhaled slowly.
Nox was not shouting. He was not releasing killing intent. But there was a quiet pressure around him, the kind that made people instinctively straighten their backs and hold their breath.
Soren regarded him for a long moment, then gave a soft chuckle.
“I understand your position, Lord of Cromwell,” he said mildly. “It is admirable. Very admirable. But you misunderstand something.”
He lifted a hand and pointed lazily at Jack.
“He does not belong to you,” Soren said. “He belongs to us. To our family. And more importantly…”
Soren’s smile thinned.
“Father is waiting for you.”
Jack’s heart skipped a beat when he heard the word father.
A faint ringing echoed in his ears.
“Some time ago,” Soren said, “Father gave each of us a small little trinket. Nothing much. Just something that alerts him that we are still alive.”
He tapped his own chest lightly.
“It is placed inside our body and gives him a vague idea of where any one of us could be. This is not always accurate, but running into you all is pure coincidence. I guess we were meant to meet each other.”
Jack’s fingers trembled slightly on the odachi’s hilt.
Of course.
Of course that old monster had prepared something like that.
“And if we refuse to hand him over?” Nox asked, his voice calm but edged.
Serana finally spoke up, her grin widening.
“Then Father will come himself,” she said cheerfully. “He said it very clearly. If we fail, he will personally walk into this little kingdom and take Jack back home. And while he is here, he might as well use the place as a training ground for the younger ones.”
Akira’s face darkened.
Serana’s brows furrowed.
Nyx exhaled sharply, eyes flashing cold.
Jack shut his eyes for a brief second.
He could see it in his head.
He could see it too clearly.
Cromwell’s streets covered in blood. The buildings he helped build torn apart. The Barony’s walls crushed like sand. Nathan fighting until his body broke. Nox’s dragon pinned down under invisible pressure. The people screaming.
He could see a tall figure standing in the middle of it all, bored, disappointed, annoyed that his children were so weak that they could not even accomplish this simple task.
“Old monster…” Jack muttered under his breath. He turned his gaze stiffly to Nox, his mouth opening slowly.
He needed to make a decision.
