Chapter 733: Assigning Roles

Inside the grand throne-like room stood Nathan, Eve, the Ant King and Queen, Jack, Serena, Nyx, Hans, Elvin, Gordon, and a few more important figures of the former barony.

The air was thick with tension, and everyone looked up to Nox with anxious eyes. Nyx stepped forward then, taking her place beside her brother.

Her cold gaze swept past those assembled as she spoke in a loud, authoritative voice.

“Now that everyone is here,” Nyx began, “this meeting will officially begin. As you all know, we’re here to assign roles in our new kingdom.”

Her eyes passed over the familiar faces — Nathan, Eve, the Ant King and Queen, Jack, Serena, Hans, Elvin, Gordon, Aina, and the others who had played crucial roles in the former barony.

Some hands twitched with nervous energy, and more than a few hearts pounded wildly. The positions about to be announced would determine their standing and duties in the Cromwell Kingdom.

“These roles have been carefully decided by Nox himself. I advise everyone to listen attentively.” She unrolled a parchment scroll — more for formality than necessity — and began to call out names.

After clearing her throat and casting one last glance across the crowd, she spoke.

“First,” her voice echoed slightly in the vast chamber, “Nathan Cromwell.”

An elderly man with a walking cane and a bald, shining head stepped forward.

Nathan — Nox’s grandfather and the former Baron of Cromwell — straightened proudly, the motion causing his joints to crack audibly in the hall.

Despite the faint smile on his lips, his hands were clasped behind his back to hide their slight tremor. This moment meant a great deal to him.

Nyx’s stern demeanor softened for just an instant.

“Grandfather,” she said with gentle acknowledgement before returning to formality, “Nathan Cromwell, for your wisdom and experience, you are hereby appointed Chancellor of the Cromwell Kingdom, chief advisor to the crown.”

“You will head the King’s Council and oversee the governance of the realm’s day-to-day affairs. Your guidance will help keep this kingdom on a just and prosperous path.”

Nathan exhaled a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. Chancellor. It was exactly what he had hoped for — the chance to serve his grandson and their people with the knowledge gained from a long life.

The reason Nox had entrusted this role to his grandfather was simple: he would not be in the capital to rule. His place was the battlefield. This was his way of passing on the responsibility.

For many in the hall, Nathan’s appointment drew murmurs of approval. An elder guiding hand meant stability. Others, however, traded wary glances — a man so old might not last long.

Of course this was concern Nox had been. Harbouring as well for a while now.

But he just couldn’t find any other person more fitting for the job.

Nathan bowed deeply. “I am honored,” he said. “I will not fail you, Your—” he caught himself with a small smile, “—Nox.”

A ripple of chuckles passed through the room at the almost-title, remembering Nox’s aversion to honorifics.

Nyx’s eyes returned to the scroll. “Lady Aina Cromwell.”

From the opposite side of Nathan, Aina — the red-haired beauty — stepped forward with graceful movements.

A brief smile flickered across Nyx’s face, quickly hidden as she read aloud. “For your foresight in trade and commerce, and your pivotal role in building our port city, you are appointed Governor of Lumina Bay, our new trade hub. In addition, you will serve as Minister of Trade and Foreign Relations.”

Aina’s eyes widened in surprise before satisfaction replaced it.

“You will oversee all commerce through our ports and manage relations with neighboring kingdoms via the sea. Lumina Bay will thrive under your care, just as it was born from your ideas.”

Pressing a hand to her chest, Aina bowed. “Thank you. I will dedicate myself to ensuring Lumina Bay becomes a beacon of prosperity for our kingdom.”

Nyx moved down the list. The next names were tied to the kingdom’s defenses and military might, the backbone of their security.

This portion of the list had been crafted with Nathan’s help.

“Hans Willard,” Nyx called.

A short, burly middle-aged man stepped forward. His face was rugged and weathered like leather, but his eyes were keen and alert. As one of the first settlers of the western region and a seasoned warrior who had survived the demonic war, Hans was a reliable choice.

“Hans, you will serve as General of the Royal Army of Cromwell Kingdom,” Nyx declared.

A faint smile tugged at his lips.

“You will be the supreme commander of all living military forces of our kingdom. From the garrisons in Crownhold’s mighty walls to the soldiers guarding our farthest towns, they will all answer to you. It will fall to you to train our troops, devise strategies, and lead them in times of war.”

Hans bowed his head and pledged solemnly.

His eyes flicked to Nox, firm with determination. The weight of the role was heavy, but he had carried worse and did not falter. Nox, seeing this, felt reassured — there was no better choice. Hans had earned it through blood and hardship.

“To support General Hans, we also recognize the strength of our non-human allies.” Nyx paused, letting the significance of this sink in.

“Ant King,” she called clearly.

A ripple of whispers spread through the hall as a massive figure stepped forward. The Ant King towered over everyone, walking on two sturdy legs. His dark shell gleamed like polished stone in the torchlight, and his large, gleaming eyes fixed calmly on Nyx.

The room fell silent. Many remembered the first time they had seen him — his towering, insectoid form had filled them with fear. But battles had changed everything. They had watched him lead his swarms with skill, fighting beside them against formidable enemies.

Now, instead of fear, there was respect. The Ant King was no longer viewed as a monster. He was a commander, an ally, and an indispensable part of their kingdom.

Nox’s vision of creating a world where beasts and humans could coexist was slowly becoming reality.
