Chapter 1270: The Jinx
Nathan teleported to another city much further south.
“We finally arrived.” Nathan muttered. He entered the city through the proper channel, meaning his arrival was recorded by the guards.
This was not a city, but a fortress. It was located on the border of the alien territory.
Thanks to the location, Nathan could sense so many dangers around him.
‘Did you feel it?’ Mae asked.
‘Yes.’
‘Even if I am not as sharp as Fenrir, I could still sense that the people around us are summoners. Looking at this, 20% of them might be summoners. There’s even a crystal armor stage summoner not far from us,’ confirmed Mae.
Nathan could sense it as well. This might be the true power of the empire.
‘This is just one of the fortresses. Well, it’s not like we’re here to fight for the empire.’
That’s true.’ Mae agreed without hesitation. ‘We want the map. But are you sure about this? You are going on foot instead of teleportation, no?
‘Indeed. I’m planning to reserve my teleportation just for when we’re in danger or when we really need it.
‘Besides, you surely know that relying too much on teleportation will just make us get lost.’
Mae definitely couldn’t deny it. ‘We have lost a couple of times because a slight deviation can send us further from the place, and we won’t know where to go. Getting lost in alien territory sounds like a huge problem. So, even if the map is accurate, it’s better to go on foot.’
‘That’s right. It’s better to check every single landmark to confirm our location. Not getting lost is one thing, but don’t you think it’s fine for us to get some demon cores along the way? It will be good if I can get enough ena to help everyone reach 1,000,000 ena before reaching the destination.’
‘I doubt it, but I believe we can somehow get two more familiars to reach that level.’
‘Either way, we need a map. According to Ignore, we could get a much more detailed map here because they’re the ones scouting the front line.’
‘I guess there’s a place we need to go.’
‘Yeah.’ Nathan nodded. Even though this was a fortress, soldiers weren’t the only ones here. Mercenaries came here as well, including their summoners. They could earn a living here or venture into alien territory.
Considering this was the gate to that place, it was no wonder why the fortress city was much bigger than any cities they had seen so far.
Nathan’s real destination was to visit the place where mercenaries gathered. To maintain order in the city, the military had set up a mercenary base that took care of everything about the mercenaries.
Sometimes, the military made a request for them.
‘Every time I hear it, it always sounds like the Adventurer Guild or the Mercenary Guild in a lot of stories.’ Nathan raised his head. ‘This one is called Mercenary Base, but I guess that’s close enough.’
‘I don’t have much knowledge about those stories of yours, but there are a lot of things like this, more so in ancient China. People used to hire mercenaries to make up numbers in war.’
Nathan smiled. ‘I know. Either way, we only want one thing, so…’
Casually, he opened the door to the base. The image inside the base was exactly what he had in mind. Multiple tables and many chairs around the lobby, a counter at the opposite side of the lobby, stairs to the more important space on the higher floor.
Mercenaries were laughing and drinking even though the sun was still up.
Fortunately, Nathan erased his presence and used a coat to hide everything about him. He casually walked to the empty counter without anyone bothering him.
“Hello.”
“!!!” The receptionist widened her eyes in shock when she saw Nathan in front of her. “W-Wha-? Oh my gosh. You startled me, Sir.”
Nathan asked, “I heard you sell maps.”
The receptionist nodded. “Of course. May I see your identification?”
“Identification?” Nathan raised his eyebrows.
The receptionist instantly understood what was going on. She politely bowed her head. “I’m sorry, Sir. If you are not a mercenary, then we won’t be able to sell you our map.”
Nathan frowned. “In that case, should I just register here to buy a map?”
“She told you that you can’t buy shit, young man. Do you think becoming a mercenary is easy?” A muscular man suddenly interjected. He was standing on another counter but came over when he overheard their conversation.
Nathan rolled his eyes before asking another question. “Let me guess. Do you need to be a reputable mercenary to afford a better map or something?”
“Yes, I’m sorry, Sir. No matter how you ask it, I can’t sell you the map.” The receptionist remained polite to him.
Nathan sighed before asking, “Is there any other way of acquiring the map? Should I just buy a map from the mercenary directly?”
“You may do that, but the price will be entirely based on your own negotiation. This establishment has no responsibility for it. You may say it’s a mercenary privilege. If you wish to become one, I can help you register.”
“How about beating me, kid? This is a test for you to become a mercenary. Hahahahaha!” The muscular man continued while grabbing Nathan’s shoulder with some strength as if he was trying to crush it.
‘Mae, do you have any illusions with strong killing intent or something that can knock out a guy?’ Nathan asked inwardly.
Before Mae could reply, the bell inside the fortress started ringing.
*Clang!*
*Clang!*
The entire hall became silent for a moment as they looked up, listening to the bell.
As if knowing the severity of the situation, a middle-aged man suddenly stormed out from his room on the second floor and shouted, “That’s the emergency bell. The fortress is under heavy attack.
“I’m expecting all the mercenaries to take a part of it, as you are under oath when you come to this town.”
‘What the…’ Nathan wanted to curse inside. He had just arrived in this town, yet he had to encounter an attack like this.
Mae couldn’t help but say, ‘Your luck is definitely the problem, Master.’
‘Ha…’ Nathan let out a long sigh.
