Capítulo 337: Ghosting

“Mom!” Mari cried the moment she walked into the hotel suite with her father, and saw her mother seated in front of the mirror tidying her hair.

“Doll!” Andy gasped, dropping the comb as she rose.

They ran to each other so fast it felt like some magical wind pushed them. They wrapped their arms around one another so tight, like they wanted to melt into one person.

Andy held her face and kissed her forehead again and again. “Oh, my beautiful doll,” she whispered, “I’ve missed you so, so much.”

Mari laughed and tears gathered in her eyes. “I missed you too, Mom. So much. And I got your gift,” she added, laughing.

Andy pulled back a bit with a giggle. “Oh! You did?” she asked with a big smile.

Mari grinned. “Yes.”

“Good. Let’s keep that a secret from your father.”

Alex, who had been talking to the men stationed to guard the room, cleared his throat loudly from behind them. “What secret exactly?”

Both mother and daughter turned together and said in the same playful voice: “It is called a secret for a reason.”

Alex chuckled as he stared at the two women he loved the most in the world, his eyes were soft with love.

“You two…” he muttered, shaking his head. “I’ll leave you to catch up. I’ll be back soon.”

Andy walked to him, held his face, and pressed a long kiss to his lips.

“Be safe,” she whispered.

Alex smiled at her. “I will.” Then he left, the door closing softly behind him.

The moment he left, Andy grabbed Mari’s hand. “Come,” she said in an excited whisper. “Tell me everything.”

She pulled Mari into the bedroom where they could have privacy and shut the door.

They sat on the bed like two best friends with their legs folded under them.

Mari took a deep breath. “Mom… a lot happened.”

Andy leaned forward. “I’m sure it has. Tell me everything, doll. How you spent your birthday, how things went with Jax. I want all the exciting details,” she added with a wink.

Mari giggled, knowing what her mother was asking about. “Well, my birthday was totally wonderful. Jax told me the truth on my birthday…” she went on to tell her mother about the birthday song from Jax and Chad, and then about the diced fruits, and the paintings in his studio. “And then…” she trailed off with a giggle, wanting to leave her mom in suspense.

“And then what?” Andy asked, her eyes gleaming with excitement as she leaned closer.

“And then he made love to me right there in his studio, surrounded by paintings of me,” Mari said, and Andy blinked.

Then she screeched like a teenager and clapped her hands like a proud mother. “Oh! Oh, my doll! That’s beautiful!” she said with loud laughter, and tears in her eyes. “You finally did it. I am so happy for you!”

Mari giggled, amused by her mother’s reaction. She loved Andy so much and often wondered if she would ever have shared such a close relationship with her biological mother.

Andy was her mother, her sister, and her first best friend before Emily and there was hardly a thing she couldn’t get Andy.

“So tell me, doll, was it how you hoped it would be?”

“Mom!”

“Tell me!” Andy giggled.

Mari nodded slowly. “It was so much better,” she admitted.

Andy squealed like a teenager after a celebrity concert. “Oh, I love this. I love hearing this!”

Mari burst out laughing. Then she looked at her mother with a small frown when she remembered something. “Mom… why didn’t you tell me about Jax? You knew he was the one sending me those paintings yet didn’t say a word.”

Andy chuckled. “Jax thought he was being subtle and sleek, so I wanted to see how far he planned to go. Telling you the truth would have ruined the fun.” She winked. “I just wanted to sit back and watch him. Isn’t it better you found him this way?”

Mari nodded. “It actually is. Mom… Jax is… he’s perfect. He’s everything I could ever want in a man, and I’m glad… I’m so glad that of all the places you sent me, it was to him.”

Andy’s eyes softened and she touched Mari’s cheek. “You seem to be in love with him.”

Mari smiled. “I don’t seem to be,” she said softly. “I am in love with him.”

Andy’s smile spread slowly and warmly. “Well, that is good,” she whispered. “Very good. You have our approval.”

Andy laughed, “So, tell me more about your time with Jax. How did he feel when you were leaving?” she asked, and Mari launched into a narration of everything that had happened that morning.

They both glanced at Mari’s phone when it started vibrating, but Mari ignored the call from Emily.

“Isn’t that Emily? Why aren’t you taking her call?” Andy asked with a concerned frown.

Mari leaned back on her hands and grinned. “I want to ghost them a little. Let them miss me. Then I’ll surprise them with my presence.”

Andy laughed loudly. “Oh, Mari. I missed you and how silly you can be.”

Mari giggled with her and then glanced at her phone when a text from Emily came in. She picked it up and as she checked the message, her face lit up.

Perfect.

“When are we going home, Mom? When is Dad coming back? Will we go home today? Can we—”

Andy cut her off. “So many questions, doll. Calm down. When your father returns, we will leave. We miss home, too.”

Mari made a small happy sound.

“Well, you both will have the house to yourself tonight. Emily says they are having a sleepover at Jamal’s and she wishes I was there. I’m going to make her wish come true. I can’t wait to see the look on Jamal’s face. And Emily’s. This is going to be fun.” Mari grinned, eyes shining.
