Chapter 300: Calm And Friendly

Callan’s heart beat a little faster than usual as he approached Ryan’s hospital room.

He had wanted Emily to see him outside briefly before he met with Ryan, but she had told him she couldn’t step out of the room until he got there, and that made him wonder if Ryan was holding her hostage.

The moment Mack, who was standing by the door saw Callan, he opened the door and looked into the room, “He’s here.”

Callan didn’t miss Mack’s movement as he stopped in front of him. “I’m Callan Quinn. I want to see Emily.”

Mack frowned. Emily? Not Ryan?

As if reading his expression, Callan gave him a pointed look, “I’m not taking a step in there until I see Emily and have a word with her in private. You can tell him that.”

Mack gave him a nod and stepped into the room to relay the message to Ryan.

“Tell him she will be out in a minute,” Ryan said, and Mack gave him a nod and returned.

Ryan smiled at Emily, “Thanks for everything. I’m not sure if I’m ever going to see you again before I leave, but you should know I appreciate your help so far.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that. I’m sure you’ll see me. I’ll be at the hospital every day before I return to Husla,” Emily assured him, making him smile.

“Thanks. And between the both of us, you should know that your feelings for him are mutual,” Ryan said, and Emily raised a brow.

“Who? Cal? Nah, they’re not,” Emily said with a shake of her head.

“Even before I met you, I could tell from the video clip of the welcome party that he has feelings for you. Take it from me. He’s in love with you,” Ryan said, and Emily frowned.

“But he’s never seemed that way,” she said, trying to think about it.

“Maybe he has his reasons. Maybe you should find out why he’s holding back and do something about it,” Ryan suggested.

Emily raised a brow. “Why are you telling me this?”

Ryan shrugged. “Because I can see how deeply you love him and care about him. I know you took care of me this way only because you know I’m his biological father. I also love how fiercely protective you are of him. I hope you both end up together.”

Emily looked at him for a moment and sighed. “Take good care of yourself, Mr Harris. And remember to be totally honest with him. No more lies, okay?”

Ryan nodded. “Okay.”

“I should go now. Cal hates being kept waiting. I’ll be going home after talking with him. I need to sleep. But I’ll come around tomorrow to check on you,” she said, and when he gave her a small nod, she walked away.

As she stepped out of the room, her lips curved in an involuntary smile when she saw Callan leaning against the wall with a deep scowl on his face.

Her heart skipped a beat when he raised his head and met her gaze. She begged her heart and ordered it not to betray her and to just treat Callan as she would Jamal.

Callan straightened immediately he saw her and his face cleared. He’d not realized how worried he’d been or how much he missed her, until he saw her now, and he was overwhelmed with relief.

“Sorry I kept you waiting,” she said with a small smile as she stopped in front of him.

To both their surprise, he grabbed her arm and pulled her to himself, embracing her tightly. “I was very worried about you,” he whispered into her hair.

Emily’s pulse quickened. “I was worried about you, too,” she admitted as she lifted her hands and wrapped them around him too.

She assured herself that it was just a friendly hug like she would give Jamal, and it didn’t affect her plan to move on from him. It didn’t matter what Ryan had said.

Callan pulled back to look into her face, “Tell me everything. Are you alright? Was he harsh to you? Did he harass you? Why would you promise not to leave his side until I got here? What if I didn’t want to see him?”

Emily smiled as she watched him fire questions at her, a frown etched between his brows. This was probably the most serious she’d ever seen him when the issue wasn’t directly about the both of them.

“I’m perfectly okay, Cal. The only thing I can tell you is that he’s willing to do anything for you. So, maybe if you want him to change, you can make him. You should go in and hear him out, okay?”

“Do you think he deserves a chance after all he’s done?” Callan asked, and Emily shrugged.

“Maybe not from Dawn or any of the others he’s hurt. But he’s your biological father. So, that’s a question only you can answer for yourself,” she said, and Callan sighed softly.

“Alright. You look pretty exhausted,” He said, thoughtlessly reaching out to brush her hair behind her ear.

Emily’s heart fluttered at the gesture, and she felt a little lightheaded. She took a step back. “Yeah. I am pretty and exhausted. Thanks.”

Callan smiled and dropped his hands back to his side, pleased that she’d caught what he meant even though he also noticed how she put a distance between them. He understood why.

“Will you wait in your Dad’s office or your doctor’s lounge so I drive you home when I’m done?” He asked, not wanting her to leave yet.

Emily shook her head. As much as she wanted that, she didn’t want to suffer her heart anymore by feeding it any more false hope. “You don’t have to do that. My Dad is taking me home.”

“He’s busy. My parents and your mom are in his office with him. Besides, don’t you want to meet Jamal and Dawn? They should be on their way soon,” he said, and she raised a brow.

“Really? I’ll wait for them. But I’ll leave after seeing them. You don’t have to take me home. Thanks. You should go in already. He’s feeling pretty anxious,” Emily said with a wave before stepping away from him and walking away.

As Callan watched her go, he could tell that she was trying to pull away from him emotionally and put some boundary between them.

She wasn’t angry as usual or being cold. She was being calm and friendly, and the thought that she might be trying to friendzone or cousin-zone him scared him.
