Capítulo 648: Chapter 648. Entertainment

“He is a general, right?” Xan Chi asked. “So, he should have an army. Do you know how large his army is?”

“The report I gathered is that he entered Khode with an army not more than thirty thousand,” Fen Nu answered.

“Hm… Not bad. We would have trouble fighting an army of this size, but if he thinks this is a good opportunity to pick on Kazhan because of the battle with Gyleth Marx, he is in for a rude awakening. Even though most of Kazhan’s people have switched to the feudal system, they are still warriors at heart. They would not just stand aside and let a foreigner steamroll through this country. He will not get far with such a number.”

“If his objective is raiding, why did he ask for a meeting with us?” Fen Nu asked.

“Hm… Perhaps this is a trap to ambush us?” Xan Chi conjectured.

Fen Nu showed a concerned expression. “I have sent scouts to survey our surrounding areas to warn us in case a large force approaches, but we should tell our people to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.”

Xan Chi agreed with the thought. He called his aide to relay this warning to everyone. When the aide walked away, a guard arrived with a report that a guest had arrived and requested a meeting with the two tribe chiefs.

“What did you say his name is?” Xan Chi asked.

“He said his name is Amon,” the guard answered.

“How many people are with him?” Fen Nu asked. She was confused why none of her scouts had notified her prior.

“He is alone,” the guard answered.

“What?” The two tribe chiefs asked at the same time.

“Uh… He is alone,” the guard said again. He was unsure if he had said something wrong.

The two tribe chiefs looked at one another.

The guard asked, “Should I chase him away?”

Instead of answering, Fen Nu asked the guard, “What is his cultivation level?”

“My Mystic Sense informed me that he is at the Intermediate Mystic Stage, but I had a feeling he is using a concealment art.”

Fen Nu turned to Xan Chi and said, “Even if he uses a good concealment art, his highest possible cultivation level is the Intermediate Spirit Stage.”

“Mm…,” Xan Chi muttered. He didn’t worry about such a level. He himself was a Peak Spirit Stage cultivator, while Fen Nu was an Intermediate Spirit Stage cultivator.”

“Um… Should I chase him away?” The guard asked again.

“No, bring him in,” Xan Chi ordered. “We will see what game he is playing.”

Not long after, the guard returned with the guest. The guest was a man with an intimidating appearance. Even though Kazhan’s tribespeople were hardy folks who had braved a life filled with difficulties, they still instinctively moved away when this guest walked past them.

Xan Chi observed the guest. He himself was large, but this guest seemed to be even slightly larger than him. What was more impressive was that the guest’s large body was full of toned muscles. There didn’t appear to be any fat on that body.

As for Fen Nu, she was more drawn to the guest’s eyes. Those two black orbs were like blackholes that could suck a person’s soul into an abyss if one stared into them for too long. Her giant wolf also responded to Amon’s presence. It woke up and growled at him. There was no mistaking that it showed the sign of a beast feeling threatened.

“General Amon?” Xan Chi asked.

Amon nodded. “I take you two are Chief Xan Chi and Chief Fen Nu?”

“That’s us, come and sit with us,” Fen Nu offered. She used her mental link to force her wolf to calm down. She was rather surprised to find that Amon affected her beast to this extent.

Amon looked down at the wooden platform where the two were. He sensed people underneath the platform. The platform did not touch the ground directly. There was a gap between them. When Amon stepped onto the platform, the sounds of people groaning and crying in pain were heard.

Every step he took drew more cries. Some of the cries called for mercy, while a few were filled with angry curses. The platform itself wobbled because whatever was supporting it under there was struggling.

Amon sat at a prepared chair beside the two tribe chiefs. He asked, “You can’t use a proper foundation for this platform?”

“Haha! This is just a temporary platform. It doesn’t need a permanent foundation,” Xan Chi laughed.

“Who is down there? Your enemies?” Amon asked.

Xan Chi shook his head. “They don’t have the qualification to be my enemy. They are just worthless worms who don’t know their places,” Xan Chi uttered.

Xan Chi might make it sound so, but Amon felt an unhealthy dose of hate and anger when he referred to the people underneath. There was no mistaking it that the tribe chief hated the poor people below their feet.

Amon didn’t dwell on this issue. He was not here for pleasantry. He said, “Tribe chiefs, let me get to the point…”

Xan Chi stopped him by raising his hand. “General Amon, I don’t know what your custom in Echos is, but here in Kazhan, we treat our guests with entertainment before business.”

He gestured to the maids standing nearby. These maids placed wine and food at the table before them.

“Eat! Drink! While we enjoy the spectacle before us,” Xan Chi uttered. He referred to the two Kazhan tribesmen who were wrestling in the arena before them.

“Hmph,” Amon harrumphed.

“It seems General Amon is not pleased with our entertainment?” Fen Nu asked.

“Well, I do think this show is boring. You, two! Go away!” Xan Chi ordered. He turned to Amon and said, “Let’s have something more exciting.”

Two groups of people were brought out. They were chained and had ragged clothes. Each group consisted of a man, a woman, and a teenage girl. The guards released the men from their chains before pushing them into the arena.

“Kong, are you alright?” One of the men asked the other.

“Just bruised a little,” the other man answered.

From the conversation, it was clear that the two knew one another. They were confused as to why they were brought here until Xan Chi ordered them, “Fight to the death.”

The two just stared at Xan Chi without moving. Xan Chi repeated, “Fight to the death, or I kill your wives and daughters.”

“You, beast! How can you do this!”

“I can, and I will,” Xan Chi replied. The guards holding the chained women and girl pointed their weapons at their captives.

“No, stop!” The man inside the arena pleaded.

“Then, fight,” Xan Chi said. “Oh, another thing. Since I am a kind man, the loser who dies will have his family follow him to the afterlife.”

“You…!!” The two men were so filled with despair and rage that they couldn’t find more words to utter.

“Hahaha!” Xan Chi laughed. “Fight well. The winner will get the prize of letting his family live.”

The two men continued to stand there until Xan Chi gestured to the guards. The guards slightly cut the women and girls they were holding, drawing their cries of pain. This prompted the two men to act. They saw no other way than to play along. They faced each other and took a combat stance.

“I’m sorry, Kong…”

“Me, too…”

When the two started fighting, Xan Chi laughed enthusiastically.

“Who are they?” Amon asked.

“They are nobodies!” Xan Chi exclaimed.

“Don’t give me that. I can tell that you hate them. They are not nobodies, at least not for you,” Amon said.

“Hm…” Xan Chi didn’t turn to Amon. He remained silent while watching the fight.

“General Amon, let me be the one to answer your question,” Fen Nu said. “But before that, I want to hear your opinion about slaves. Do you oppose its practice?”

“I don’t give a shit about it. Slaves, followers, it’s the same to me,” Amon replied.

Fen Nu smiled. “Well then, allow me to tell you a story. In the past, before the teachings of the Temple of Divinity changed our way of life, Kazhan was filled with many tribes that frequently waged war against each other. We had a conclave of the biggest tribes that govern us loosely, but we are still allowed to settle our differences with force.

“During this time, slave practice was a common thing for us. Anyone who could not cultivate was automatically a slave. The tribe that lost a battle would have its members taken as slaves. Slaves were even traded around like currency.”

“Yeah… They were good times,” Xan Chi remarked.

“After the grand chief of our conclave adopted feudalism. He named himself a king, and the other tribe chiefs of the conclave became nobles,” Fen Nu continued her tale. “Slave practice was slowly eradicated as the Temple of Divinity gained further influence over this country. As a result, slaves gained citizenry. They could procure wealth and even join the court, gaining political power. However, instead of being grateful for this blessing, do you know what they did? They demanded reparations for what befell their ancestors and for the descendants of the past slave owners to be punished.”

Xan Chi seemed unable to contain himself. He spat, “A bunch of worthless filths, they are. They shouldn’t have been granted freedom!”
