Chapter 604: The choices

After his speech, the God of Humanity gave me a new glance, one that felt much calmer than before. Paradoxically, the Goddess of Bees’ goading seemed to work in my favour!

“I’m more concerned not with the ‘why’ and ‘what’ Nectus was doing, but ‘how’ his bees were doing that,” Dalmanrach said, making me wonder again what he was thinking about. “In theory, anything in the universe can manifest this kind of power. In practice, this only happened once—when the gods appeared in this world. To repeat this event, even on the tiniest scale…”

“Shouldn’t be possible,” the God of Humanity continued. “Why, Richard, you’ve gone quite far in your pursuit of my likeness!”

‘Uh, thanks?’ I replied, but the God of Humanity wasn’t really speaking with me.

The Goddess of Bees eyed me with that insect gaze I couldn’t read.

“Don’t flatter yourself, God of Humanity. The mortal only does this in pursuit of his mortal goals. But the bird-god is right—this is an extremely rare secret. And rare means valuable… Why don’t we restore the correct order of things and take it for ourselves?”

‘I won’t let you just TAKE anything from me!’ I refused immediately. ‘I swear, I’d rather die.’

The Goddess of Bees didn’t have eyelids to narrow her eyes, but her gaze certainly turned even more predatory.

“Would you really?.. What about your precious little girls?”

I stared back at her as far as my astral projection allowed, knowing that I couldn’t show the slightest hint of weakness there, or she really would rip me and Precio-Us apart for this knowledge.

The Goddess of Bees was a terrorist! You couldn’t bargain with terrorists, or they would just terrorise you even harder!

“Fine,” she said after what felt like an eternity. “We can EXCHANGE something for this knowledge. You had some ambitions—they can be easily arranged by us, surely. Seeing your family from the other world, or what was it?”

“Those are small words of a small-minded person, Goddess of Bees!” the God of Humanity declared, waving an arm dramatically. “Why would my champion want these mortal things when he has divinity right next to him? When he could become an equal to me, his creator! And… As outrageous as it sounds, if he delivers us a secret like that, perhaps he could be allowed to? If he succeeds in his research, Richard could ascend to the ranks of gods and join our alliance! As the lowest-ranking member, of course. He will strengthen our ranks.”

“Yes, this surely sounds outrageous! Are you going to just let a mortal keep pursuing divinity?” the Goddess of Bees hissed.

While they bickered, Dalmanrach stayed quiet, but his gaze was peering at me intently. I was not surprised to hear his voice in my head.

‘You made a mistake being caught when you were so close to our goals, Nectus. There’s little I could do to protect you at this point. But if you agree with the God of Humanity’s offer and we convince the Goddess of Bees to let this happen, then later we will be able to join with the God of Usnea Trees and make our own triumvirate.’

This didn’t sound quite like what Dalmanrach promised me originally—a complete destruction of the Game of Evolution. However, at this point, I was more interested in another thing.

Dalmanrach used telepathy to protect himself from being overheard, and this gave me hope. Perhaps I won’t be overhead, either!

‘Precio-Us, can you hear me?’ I messaged carefully. ‘The Goddess of Bees is a shit-for-brains bitch, repeat, the Goddess of Bees is a shit-for-brains bitch. Send a response through a signaller with this message if you are alright.’

The reply came almost immediately—Precio-Us must’ve already cleared an emergency telepathic chain channel and were ready to use it.

‘The Goddess of Bees is a shit-for-brains bitch. We are… holding on.’

If I were in my own body, I’d smile.

They really weren’t listening… Although the Goddess of Bees had ignored some of my insults in the past, I doubted all three of the gods present would not react to them in any way.

Although I was risking sending this message, my gamble paid off, and I knew I could speak more or less safely.

The Goddess of Bees and the God of Humanity were still bickering about how much mortals were worth. I didn’t know where this would lead, but I had a feeling that they bickered often and for prolonged periods of time.

‘Precio-Us, you must stabilize your control of the Divinity Sound immediately. This is your number one priority, and I give you permission to request anyone you want to join your hive mind,’ I messaged, although my heart bled a little doing so.

‘Yes, Father.’

Since I knew how distracted they were by the Divinity Sound, I continued with more detailed instructions:

‘Only young enough Hardbees and baseline bees have the “Gestalt Consciousness” gene, but there are a few work camps in range of your telepathy that should have some Hardbee workers. I will also request more Hardbees to travel toward you and prepare for contact so you don’t have to search for them.’

‘Thank you, Father.’

I gave necessary orders as quickly as I could, knowing that I didn’t have much time until my fate, the fate of Precio-Us, and perhaps of the entire Bee Empire, would be solved.

Whatever happened, I just hoped it wouldn’t strike Amby as well. Amby and all the other girls…

At this moment, I heard another telepathic voice in my head. The manner of speech was instantly recognisable.

‘The Emperor of Bees will join me and my offspring as a single mind, divine mind. The Emperor of Bees will share with us the song of divinity, and we will all become a god, humans and bees—a god that’s more than any of the other ones. And together, we will consume the other gods, one by one.’

The Champion Tree was speaking on Usnea God’s behalf, offering me another option… which was just as dubious as the other ones!
