Chapter 468: [Dystopian Elven War] [44]
I remained frozen as I saw his fist burst out from the back of my younger self’s chest.
“Azariah!!”
Yennefer’s scream echoed within the place making me snap out.
Rangar flickered his hand and threw my body aside like a ragdoll.
He slowly leaned in to grab Liam in his hand, holding him tightly.
“Azariah!?”
Yennefer rushed towards my broken body that was gasping for air.
Nerissa however remained frozen in her place.
Blood filled my younger self’s mouth, the warmth running down his chin as his tiny hands tried to press against the gaping wound.
The world tilted and blurred, every breath heavier than the last.
Yennefer fell to her knees beside me, her arms shaking as she tried to hold me steady. “No, no, no! Azariah, stay with me!”
I could see Liam in Ragnar’s arms now, the baby crying loudly as if sensing the danger.
Ragnar’s expression was cold, unfeeling, as though the child was nothing more than an object to claim.
“Stop…” I heard Nerissa’s faint voice.
But she didn’t move. She stood rooted to the ground, her face pale, her hands trembling.
Her eyes darted between me bleeding out on the grass and Liam wailing in Ragnar’s grip.
For the first time, she looked… powerless.
Clap! Clap!
A clapping sound echoed within the place as Jones let out a laugh.
“You really are something Ragnar!” He yelled, his laugh going crazy. “Killing Esmeray’s son knowing full well what she can do—.”
“This isn’t over.” Ragnar cut him off as he glared at him. “I haven’t lost.”
“A poor attempt to console yourself isn’t it?” Jones said with a smile, he gestured towards him. “What’s with all that blood did you kill your family?”
Ragnar’s golden eyes narrowed, but he didn’t answer Jones.
His grip around Liam tightened, the baby’s cries echoing through the shattered calm of the garden.
Jones tilted his head, his smile widening.
“Ah… silence. That means I’m right.” He let out another laugh, though there was only madness in his voice. “You think taking that child will save you? No, Ragnar. It will destroy you.”
Yennefer’s sobs shook as she tried to press against my younger self’s wound, her hands slick with blood.
Ragnar finally broke his silence as he looked at his child. “Sorry son.”
Saying so, his body began to change as crimson marks covered his forehead.
Jones’ expression changed as he pointed at Ragnar. “Attack him!”
As the two parts of Molech rushed to attack him, Ragnar’s body burst out a storm.
It immediately threw them away as he closed his eyes.
In front of my eyes, Liam’s body began to dry up.
Liam’s cries turned into a hoarse wail before fading, his tiny limbs flailing weakly as the color drained from his skin.
“No!” Nerissa’s scream tore through the garden.
She tried to rise, to rush at Ragnar but she couldn’t.
Ragnar’s storm only thickened.
Crimson energy wrapped around him like armor, and the wind tore apart everything near him.
I lay on the ground, my small body broken, vision fading.
Ragnar’s golden eyes opened, glowing with a maddening light.
His voice was steady, uncaring. “Sacrifices must be made.”
The last spark of life left Liam’s body, and in the next heartbeat, crimson energy surged into Ragnar.
Rangar threw the dried up body of Liam on the ground as he slowly floated.
His body burst forward as he rushed towards Jones.
They began fighting, the Avatar of Molech joining them.
Nerissa quickly rushed towards her son’s body.
She fell to her knees, scooping Liam’s lifeless body into her arms.
“No… no, please… not you,” she whispered, her voice cracking.
Tears streamed freely down her face as she clutched him tighter, rocking back and forth. “My baby… my son…”
From afar Zenith and Nymeria rushed towards us, their expressions as much horrified.
Zenith tripped as she ran, but she didn’t stop…..her little hands reaching out as if she could somehow help.
Nymeria was quieter, but the way her small face twisted said more than words.
She knelt beside me as I was dying from my injuries.
“Az….” She whispered, tears trickled down her face. “Stay with me…please.”
Her ear burned red as she tried to help me but she couldn’t.
She just sat there while Zenith was shaking my body.
Nerissa was crying while holding her child and I don’t blame her for that.
Nymeria quickly wiped her tears as she looked at the World Tree.
“Please…Please!” Her voice echoed as she raised her hand. “Help…him.”
The moment Nymeria’s trembling voice rose to the sky, the air shifted.
The World Tree shuddered, its colossal branches glowing faintly as if it had heard her plea.
The dome that covered the place, stopping the vampires vanished because of it.
An enormous branch rushed towards us before it stopped in front of her.
Nymeria as if driven by instinct grabbed the branch with her tiny hand.
‘…’
She used her blessing as a filter to endorse the raw energy.
Tiny motes of light drifted down from her hand that fell into my body.
My back arched as a ragged gasp tore from my throat, blood spilling and mixing with the glow.
Nerissa who saw this quickly crawled towards Nymeria.
“Nymeria.” She called, her voice trembling. “…Help your brother as well…save him too.”
Nymeria’s tiny frame shook violently, her knees nearly buckling under the sheer force running through her.
She nodded her head in response. “…I will.” She replied. “Let me heal Az… first.”
Nerissa swallowed hard as she placed her ear on her son’s chest. “…He is still breathing.” She whispered. “….Please hurry.”
Nymeria nodded forcing herself even more.
But the energy was too much for her.
Her face began to crack down as blood dripped from it.
My younger self gasped again, the bleeding slowing, the searing warmth knitting flesh that should not have been able to mend.
The cracks along her cheeks deepened, glowing faintly with the Tree’s light.
It took thirty seconds to save my life and bring me out of danger.
When Nymeria focused on Liam…
…He was already dead.
Nerissa just sat there with her dead son in her arms.
Her broken face was the last thing that I saw before my consciousness slipped away.
—
—
I was abandoned after that.
Nerissa refused to see me and Yennefer moved back to Akasha with Zenith.
Edel forced her but it hurt my younger self nonetheless.
Ragnar…the main culprit behind all this vanished without any trace.
The elves and the church fearing mass panic made him a hero.
He who sacrificed himself to save the World Tree but its roots were still damaged significantly shortening its life.
Nymeria was in a coma after using too much of the World Tree’s powers.
She was even stripped of it…for bringing back the dead.
…Yes. I was dead even though it was for a split second.
Liam died in all this.
And now my younger self was sitting in the dark room, wondering what I did wrong.
The room was small, silent, and heavy with a darkness that felt thicker than the night outside.
My younger self sat on the edge of the bed, legs dangling but unmoving, eyes staring at nothing.
I was alone.
Truly, painfully alone.
And as I sat there the door of my room opened up.
Both of ‘me’ froze as we saw a woman walk inside.
She was tall, pale and filled with pride that showed in the way she presented herself.
Her long platinum hair flowed behind her while her lifeless grey eyes stared at me.
“…Who are you?” My younger self asked, his voice fearful.
Esmeray stood in front of me as she placed her hand over my head. “I am your birth mother.” She said. “I came to take you back.”
My younger self didn’t seem to like it. “…but why now—?”
“All the others have abandoned you my child.” Esmeray said lifelessly. “I am the only one you have now.”
I stepped forward, not my younger self but me.
“Is it fun mother?” I asked, looking at her. “Playing with my mind.”
The world around me slowly drifted away, the place only had two people now.
Me and my mother.
She looked at me with a small smile. “How did you notice?”
“I have seen enough of your tricks.” I replied. “How are you here anyway?”
“I placed a small part of my consciousness when I created the red door.” She replied, placing her hand behind. “A way for me to know when you are aware of your past.”
“Why?” I asked, tilting my head. “So you can plan accordingly?”
Esmeray’s faint smile didn’t falter and I hate that.
“Nerissa blames you for all that happened in her life.” She said slowly. “It is her way of coping with the pain.”
“….”
I didn’t say anything in response.
“…Had you not been there nothing would have happened.” She continued, roaming around me. “She wouldn’t have lost her son, thousands of elves wouldn’t have died because of losing the World Tree’s protection—.”
“What would have happened if I hadn’t noticed you in my mind?” I cut her off as I asked.
She stopped in front of me looking into my eyes.
“I would have stayed here.” She replied. “Slowly but surely manipulate you into doing what I want.”
Her words rang out, calm and unapologetic.
I smiled to hide my anger. “To make me your puppet huh?”
Esmeray tilted her head slightly, the faint smile never leaving her lips.
“Puppet is such an ugly word, my son. I prefer… guiding hand.”
“I have so much to do mother.” I said, as I waved my hand. “I will see you soon.”
A storm burst forth as it completely twisted her consciousness until nothing was left.
Left alone I once again thought about the tragedy.
‘….I have people I want to talk with.’
Noob here.
well, I wanted this chapter to be much more impactful that it came out.
I had plans but I couldn’t write it the way I wanted.
I did the best of my capabilities and I am sorry if it doesn’t live up to your expectations.
