Chapter 1095: The Olympics (5)

There were a total of fourteen swimming events: six freestyle races ranging from 50 to 1500 metres, two backstroke events at 100 and 200 metres, two breaststroke events of the same lengths, two butterfly events, and two individual medleys at 200 and 400 metres.

All fourteen swimming events were divided into male and female divisions. By the time the competitions concluded after two days, the Bharatiya Empire had secured four gold medals, three in the men’s division and one in the women’s, along with six silvers and twelve bronzes.

The other countries with the second-best performances were the Netherlands and Spain, each earning one gold medal along with several silver and bronze finishes. There were a few podium winners from Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, but to everyone’s surprise, the Chenla Kingdom produced a female athlete who captured the 1500-metre freestyle title, setting a record with a two-second lead over all competitors to claim the gold.

Vanna Hor was in tears as she received the gold medal, which she hadn’t even dreamed of. She just wanted to help out her pregnant sister, who had been abandoned. She wanted nothing else; the glory to the kingdom and anything else meant nothing to her. The only thing that mattered was money, but who would have thought she, who was always ridiculed for not having money to pay the boat fare and always had to swim across the river herself, would one day win the greatest swimming competition in the world?

She was now certain that all her problems would disappear, and that realisation brought tears to her eyes. Looking around at the cheering crowd, the excited faces and admiring gazes stirred something new within her, ‘Maybe swimming as a profession isn’t so bad after all.’ Wiping her tears and letting out a few choked laughs, she stepped down from the podium and walked toward the lobby.

It was a surprise, because as soon as she entered the lobby, a luxuriously dressed noble woman and a few other people seemed to be waiting for her.

“Congratulations, Miss Vanna. You have done an excellent job, and I hope you continue to swim and inspire girls all over the world.”

Realising who it was that came forward to congratulate her, Vanna Hor covered her mouth in disbelief and shock, but when she understood what was said, her eyes widened. ‘Me? Inspire? But I just swim.’ Did she really have such a big responsibility? She felt uneasy. Could her shoulders bear it? She didn’t know. She had never thought so far ahead in life, but just when she was trying to accept that her life was about to change forever, it threw her a curveball in the form of the person standing before her, placing more responsibilities than she could ever bear.

“T-Thank y-you, Y-Your M-Majesty… th-the E-Empress.”

She meekly bent her head in reservedness. After all, putting aside the previous compliment, she herself admired the Empress of the Bharatiya Empire, the top novelist in the world and one of the richest women who had made the majority of her wealth by herself. She couldn’t look in the eyes of such a person.

Just as she was about to express her inability to meet the expectations of Her Majesty, she caught a figure approaching at the corner of her eye.

Her attention was immediately attracted by a little girl in a cute ponytail, dressed up like a doll.

Maybe because it was Vanna who looked at her, the little girl froze in place, her face completely red, “Big sister, can I, can I get your autograph?”

Vanna’s eyes widened, “Me…?”

She had not encountered such a situation before. Even when she was selected for the Olympics team, no one paid much attention to her, and having admirers had never crossed her mind. After all, she did not have to compete with anyone to get the spot, she only needed to prove that she could swim for a long time. But now, suddenly getting attention, and that too from a little girl, she did not know what to do.

Kavya looked at the little girl and smiled, “What is your name, little sister?”

The girl seemed not to have recognised the elderly woman, but her appearance did give off an air of intimacy. “It’s Meera Shahwah, aunt, I am from the Kingdom of Persia.”

“What a nice name,” Kavya complimented, then she looked towards Vanna, “Why don’t you sign for this little girl? It looks like she adores you.”

Vanna finally woke up from her awkwardness and hesitantly moved forward, “Should I sign here?” she asked with some doubt. She was worried if she signed on the hat it would ruin it permanently, but the little girl nodded with hope and adoration written all over her face. Holding the pen firmly and composing herself to stop her hand from trembling, Vanna resolutely wrote her name.

“Thank you, miss. When I grow up, I will definitely be like you,” she laughed with a sweet smile and trotted away to get the autograph of another athlete.

Vanna was stuck in her place. She now understood what Her Majesty meant by continuing to influence young girls all over the world.

“Your Majesty, replying to your earlier suggestion, I truly do hope I can continue to do so.”

Kavya understood what Vanna meant and looked at her with approval.

At the same time, the chess championship also drew to a close. All three formats, classical, rapid, and blitz, had their respective winners. As expected, the classical titles went to Deepa Shah in the men’s division and Sushma Chauhan in the women’s. The rapid and blitz events were also swept by Bharatiya players, while the silver medals across formats were mostly taken by the Russian and Chinese teams. The bronze positions were shared among the Parisians and competitors from Slavic Byzantium.

Vijay personally awarded the Olympic medals to each and every person in the male division, but of course, since he could not occupy all the spotlight, Peter, Leonardo and Alexis had the chance to award the prizes to the winners of the female division. At the end of the day, in the Olympic village temporarily built on the outskirts of Athens, a large banquet was held for the players who had won and for the important guests themselves.

Vijay, carrying his Rakta Astram by his waist and adorning a black sherwani, entered the banquet himself.

As soon as he entered the room, he attracted all the attention from the people around him.

The kings’ vassals and representatives from Southeast Asia, Suvarna Dwipa, East Asia, and the Middle East all approached him eagerly, while the European nobles and monarchs remained more reserved. Figures such as Alphonso von Schwartz of the Austrian Empire, Marquee Harlequin Baltimore of the Kingdom of Sweden, Torfin Odyssey of Danish Norway, and several others lingered at a distance, unsure whether to step forward and introduce themselves.

As for Matthew Horrington of England, he simply sat in the corner, sipping his tea, his eyes flickering with a glint as if he was anticipating something.

Vijay had casually dealt with everyone who came forward to either introduce themselves or talk with him. He then decisively went to the winners of different games, be it in chess or swimming, and congratulated them.

However, just when he was about to drink a cup of water, he felt a slight threat coming from behind him. His eyes immediately sharpened, and his mouth showed an upturned arc, ‘finally.’

Before anyone could even understand what happened—

‘Shing!’

A thud was heard, and there was a headless corpse on the ground. Everyone’s expression froze, and their gaze was completely cemented onto the elderly figure holding a bloody sword in his hand and standing there nonchalantly, with no emotion in his eyes.

A chill radiated in Matthew Horrington’s heart, and he couldn’t help but tremble. The legends are real, the Emperor of the Bharatiya Empire is a demon placed by the Devil, or else how could he fight despite being so old and move with such swiftness?

“Protect his majesty, the emperor!” Soon, the royal guards swarmed in, and Vijay was escorted out.

But what everyone failed to notice was a slight arc on Vijay’s lips.

Almost immediately, news spread throughout Athens that the emperor of the Bharatiya Empire had been attacked by an Islamist, but fortunately, the Emperor fought back and swiftly ended the assassin’s life. This was enough to send tremors down Georgios’s heart. If something really happened to the Emperor, would Greece still exist?

His heart trembled. “Damned cultists,” he cursed with hatred. Being the general secretary of the republics, it was not a surprise to him that there were still some deep-rooted Islamic extremists in society, especially in the Republic of Anatolia and the Republic of Syria. He was thinking about dealing with them slowly after the Olympic Games ended, but it looked like it was his mistake giving a living space to these pests.

His eyes immediately focused on his right, where a man was silently sitting without a word. Who else could it be other than Leander, ‘Little Devil Leander ‘?

“I have a task for you.”

He threw the list he had compiled for the last two years in front of Leander.

“I’m sure the Bharatiya Army is eager to take action, but I don’t want to give them a chance. I want you to end them all as swiftly as possible. I don’t care about the collateral damage, just reduce the pests to a pulp.”

Leander, picking up the document and not even looking through it, simply got up and left. Looking at his back, Georgios Paleologos was worried. The reason why, despite having names, he hadn’t acted was because all the people on the list had followers behind them, and these followers were normal people. If these hardliners were killed, then the people who were fooled by them would be radicalised, creating a new problem. So his approach was to slowly infiltrate the group, create divisions through ideological and monetary means, and isolate the hardline leaders. But now, everything had come to waste.

However, he did not regret it. Compared to offending the Bharatiya Empire, some unrest was nothing. Besides, he was confident that even if things got out of hand, His Majesty Vijay would lend a helping hand, so it was the best time to settle things once and for all.
