Chapter 371: Nothing Stronger Than Family

“Please take this in case anything else comes to mind,” Kow Bjorn handed Raya a digital card. “We’ll be in town for a while, so feel free to contact us anytime.”

“Sure.” She nodded after a moment and took the card.

“It’s truly been an honor to meet you!” Fran Ducci repeated as he bowed. “I can’t thank you enough for your service, courage, and-”

“We’ll take our leave now.” Kow Bjorn said, pulling his fellow officer away. “Thank you.” He added with a nod in Rina’s direction.

“Sure.” She said, placing a hand on the door handle.

The sisters waited for the elevator doors to close behind the two Syndicate Officers before closing their door.

“Fuck, that was stressful.” Raya sighed, resting her back against the door.

“You don’t think they bugged the place or something, right?” Rina asked with a tilt of her head.

Raya’s face immediately tightened, eyes turning wide.

Her pupils moved towards every area that the Syndicate Officers had even brushed against.

It was unlikely that they had left anything in the first place because they hadn’t been left alone, even for a moment.

Raya’s gaze went to the digital card she had been handed, then to her sister.

“Yeah.” Rina nodded, reading her mind completely.

The two ran to the far side of the laboratory, shoved the second bookshelf away from the wall, pulled the lever hidden beneath a table ten steps away, then entered the code that opened the first vault door, then the code that opened the second, then the third.

“See ya never,” Raya said, tossing the card inside.

Each vault door was made of a different material, designed for complete isolation. Sound waves, electromagnetic signals, X-rays… nothing could pass through.

Each vault door was closed immediately after.

“…” Rina pursed her lips.

“I told you this would be useful,” Raya said smugly.

“I think you might have a pretty severe case of paranoia.”

“Ha? You’re the one who talked about them bugging the place!”

“Yes, but…”

Raya let herself fall onto the sofa with a sigh.

“Is there anything you’re not telling me?” Rina asked. “I know you’re hiding Cero from them, but you’re more nervous than I would expect from you.”

“Well, maybe I’m not a good liar.” Raya shrugged. “You handled yourself pretty well. I’m surprised, since you rarely talk to anyone other than me.”

“What’s that got to do with anything?”

“Social skills and all?”

“So I need to be social to be a good liar?”

“So I thought.” Raya shrugged.

Rina took a seat on the opposite side.

“I don’t know. I’m used to thinking before talking, so I guess it would be difficult for something to slip.”

“That guy was definitely there to make us slip up.” Raya muttered.

“He did spend the whole twenty minutes glazing you.” Rina nodded.

“Yeah, I guess sending a glazer wasn’t a bad idea.”

“People slip up when they’re complimented too much. Makes you think that the person really likes you, that they’re really on your side, that you can be honest.”

“Good thing I’m too smart for that to work on me.” Raya smirked.

“You were too nervous for the compliments to land.”

“…!”

“Do you know how many blanks I had to fill? What were you even thinking about to be spacing out while talking to Officers of the goddamn Syndicate?”

Raya pursed her lips and remained silent for a moment. “Stuff.”

“Stuff? Well, that’s nice. I’ve always been interested in stuff.”

“Alright, fine.” Raya sat up at once, her eyes gleaming. “It’s this theory that I have.”

“Must be one hell of a theory to make you forget about Syndicate Officers.”

“Oh, you have no idea.”

“Well? What is it?”

“I think that pursuing that might be the most problematic thing to do in this day and age. I mean… I don’t think I could get into more trouble than by pursuing this idea, by testing this theory.”

“Really? Could it bring more trouble than lying to Syndicate Officers could?”

The corner of Raya’s lips curled. “It could be more trouble than killing Syndicate Officers.”

Rina stared at her sister for a moment, turned to stare at the window, back at her sister, then at her hands.

“Thanks, I’m not interested anymore-”

“IT’S TOO LATE NOW, I NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THIS!”

Rina blinked and stood up.

“I really don’t wanna know-”

The moment she stepped away, her sister’s hand roughly took hold of her arm, pulling her back onto the sofa.

“Rina, come on.” Raya said with a serious voice, and an even more serious face. “We’re family. You have to listen to me. For family.”

“The fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“There’s nothing stronger than family.” Raya’s face remained the personification of seriousness. “As long as it’s the two of us, Syndicate or-”

“Oh, my god, shut up. Shut up. Fine, I’ll listen. Just stop spouting this nonsense.”

Raya’s serious face was betrayed by the curling of her lips. “Thanks, fam.”

“Just…” Rina jerked her arm away from Raya’s grasp. “Let go of me. Fine. Whatever.”

“Alright, so…” Raya rubbed her hands together. “Shit. Where do I even start?”

“From the beginning?”

Raya turned towards her sister and stared with a grimace. “Oh, I start from the beginning? Oh, thank you very much. No shit, I start from the beginning.”

“Geez, take a breather, why don’t you?”

“Ha? You’re not the boss of me. Don’t tell me to take a breather. I’ll take a breather when I want!”

Rina raised an eyebrow and put her hands together.

“What are you thinking about?” Raya asked. “What are you thinking about?”

“You’re anxious, agitated, restless, and irritable. Earlier, I even caught you shaking a couple of times.”

“S-So?” Raya stuttered, feeling attacked.

“I see what this is.” Rina said, crossing her arms and nodding continually.

“What are you talking about? What are you talking about?!”

Rina stared at her sister with a knowing, compassionate look.

“Withdrawals.”

“Ha?”

“Now that Cero is gone, you’re like a crackhead… Without her crack. Or his. Or theirs-”

“Shut the fuck up.”
