Chapter 421: Roger is safe now
“Why would you think that?” Aiden asked, his brows furrowed in concern. “You believe someone from Russia followed you here and targeted Roger instead, just because you two live together?”
Varya gave a small nod. “Why not? I have enemies… ones I hoped I’d left behind. I need to check the CCTV footage from our apartment complex. Maybe I’ll find something there,” she said determinedly, wiping the corner of her eye. “Stay here with him,” she added firmly despite the tremor in it.
“You don’t have to go anywhere,” came a deep voice from the doorway.
Both Aiden and Varya turned sharply to see Lucius standing there. He walked in and his jaw clenched as his eyes landed on Roger lying helplessly on the hospital bed, and his fists clenched at his sides.
“Zayne is already on his way,” Lucius continued. “We’ll handle the investigation. For all we know, the enemy could be from Italy, not Russia.”
Varya nodded in agreement She hastily wiped away the tears pooling at the corners of her eyes, forcing herself to stay composed.
“Varya, I talked to the doctor. Roger is going to be fine,” Lucius said, placing his hand over her shoulder. “Why don’t you go home? I’ll stay here with Roger.” He pulled back his hand before lowering it to his side.
“No, Lucius. I must stay here,” Varya stated.
“Roger is going to be upset to see you like this. Go home, change your clothes and bring some new ones for Roger since he will be awake soon. You won’t want him to be worried seeing you in such a state,” he asserted, this time in a more humble tone.
Varya agreed this time and gazed at Roger. Holding his hand, she leaned down and kissed it before leaving with Aiden.
Lucius ran his fingers through his hair and settled on the chair near the bed. Taking out the phone, he called Layla to make sure she would not take more stress.
As he dialed the number, Layla answered his call immediately as if she seated on it, waiting for his call only.
“How’s Roger?”
“Fine. He’s out of danger,” Lucius replied.
Layla heaved a sigh of relief. “How’s Varya?” she inquired. “Should I come there? She might need me,” she opined.
“I have sent Varya home with Aiden. She’s acting strong. You should come when Roger be awake. I don’t want to put stress on you at this time,” Lucius stated.
“Okay. Then, I’ll come when Roger regains his consciousness,” Layla replied. “What if I go to their apartment and mert Varya there? She will feel better seeing me,” she suggested.
“Okay. You can go there. I’ll ask the driver to take you there since he knows Roger’s apartment,” Lucius opined.
“Okay,” Layla agreed. “You are fine, right?” she asked.
“Hmm. It was just shocking that Roger got injured,” Lucius said from the other side. “But I’m fine. If anyone who’s scared, then it’s Varya. She’s been acting strong, but you also know in such situations, we may end up breaking.”
“Yes. I’ll go and see her,” Layla assured him. “I hope Zayne finds out who was behind this.”
“He’s into it,” Lucius said. “I’ll hang up. Just call me when you’ll be at Varya’s and Roger’s place.”
“Sure.” Layla Lowered the phone in her lap.

Varya sat on the edge of the bed, dressed in a fresh pair of clothes, but her hands wouldn’t stop trembling. Tears spilled down her cheeks, blurring her vision.
She stared at her quivering fingers and whispered, “I shouldn’t feel like this,” though the fear inside her was overwhelming and impossible to ignore.
A soft knock came at the door.
“It’s me, Layla. Are you inside?”
Quickly wiping her face, Varya hurried to open the door. “Layla,” she said in a broken voice.
Without a word, Layla stepped forward and wrapped her arms around her. “I thought I’d visit you,” she said gently, her hand moving in slow, calming circles along Varya’s back. “It must have been terrifying for you.”
“It was,” Varya admitted, her voice cracking as fresh tears poured from her eyes. “Roger… he was fine, smiling even, and then suddenly… I found him unconscious in a pool of blood.” Her body shook with the force of her sobs.
Layla tightened her embrace, saying nothing, offering comfort in the silence. Her steady hand continued to pat Varya’s back.
After a while, Varya pulled away, her face still wet with tears. Layla reached up and softly dabbed the tears from her cheeks with her fingertips.
“I can understand your fear,” she said warmly. “But Roger is safe now. Try to hold onto that. Don’t let your mind wander to what-ifs.”
“You’re right,” Varya said, wiping her eyes. She glanced at Layla’s stomach and her face softened with guilt. “How are you? I’m sorry you had to get stressed like this, especially now,” she added, remembering that Layla was pregnant.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me,” Layla replied with a reassuring smile.
Just then, Aiden cleared his throat, drawing their attention. “Zayne is here. He would like to speak with you, Varya.”
As they walked toward the living room, Varya spotted Zayne seated on the couch alongside another officer. The two men stood briefly to greet them before sitting back down.
“Miss Varya Sokolov,” Zayne said formally, his tone steady. “I have a few questions for you.” He gestured politely toward the armchair across from him. “Please, have a seat.”
Varya sat down and the two officers sat too.
“Do you suspect anyone from your neighbour? The attacker seems to be well aware of this residential complex,” Zayne said.
Varya shook her head. “No, I don’t.” She fidgeted with her fingers, wondering if she should speak how she had the suspicion that it could be someone from Russia. He kept asking her questions before he was done.
“I’ve to take this call,” the second officer excused himself and went out of the apartment.
“What about the CCTVs, Zayne? Did you check them?” Aiden asked finally.
“I did check them. The face is not clear. The spot where Roger’s car was parked it was a bit dark. However, we have to check the CCTVs outside. We will catch the culprit soon,” Zayne told them. He glanced at Varya and asked him if she suspected someone from Russia.
“Huh? No. I don’t suspect anyone. However, I did have enemies there,” Varya admitted truthfully.
“Hmm. Roger must have seen the face of the culprit. Once he wakes up, it will be easier for us to step ahead in the investigation,” Zayne said and took his leave.
“You think someone from Russia could be behind this?” Layla asked her.
“Yes. But Lucius told me not to think like that. It could be someone from here,” Varya replied.
“Boss is right. The attack happened on Roger specifically,” Aiden stated. “That’s why our prime suspect is from Italy, not Russia,” he asserted.
