Chapter 663: The End of the War
He walked slowly across the field and looked at the latest deaths, as if searching for something.
Soon, he came up behind Isla, who was covered in blood, and tapped her on the shoulder.
She was startled, but when she looked up and saw that it was him, she visibly relaxed. “Matt,” she greeted him.
He nodded.
“How are you feeling? I see you’ve regained a large portion of your power,” he said.
She nodded. “But it’s hard for me to control it… I have to get my body used to everything new.”
Matthew nodded.
‘It’s normal,’ he thought. ‘All the reboots of immortality are over. Now comes the recovery of the power she once had, but her body has been rebooted several times. I’m afraid this will take her a while,’ he thought.
“I’m sure you’ll do fine,” he said, as he stopped the blow of one of the few remaining idiots who had gone mad and tore him to pieces with one movement.
“What will you do now?” Isla asked, curious to see him so pensive.
“We will form a great wall of containment between the three kingdoms. All forces will be concentrated there, ready to respond. The preparations are already in place, and the clans will be able to begin to grow greatly from now on, as I will soon make them members of my family,” he replied.
She frowned. “And what are you going to do?” she asked, noticing that he seemed to have different plans, from the way he spoke…
Matthew looked up and gazed at the stars… or rather, he was trying to sense the presence of the Divine City…
“I have to leave. The world is changing, and my body doesn’t seem to want to adapt to the change. I need to find a place where I can strengthen it. Until then, you must all wait for me on this side, as I don’t think I can do much against our enemies in the Central City right now.”
“Where are you going?”
“I don’t know,” he replied simply.
Although he already knew where he was going, he simply didn’t want anyone to follow him.
His mind was set on the only place that could help him: the territory of the Dragons, the part closest to his Frozen Infinity.
There, he could surely strengthen his body until it allowed him to absorb the power of his abilities, which he had been trying to contain for quite some time.
If he didn’t fix it… he could die.
Although Isla noticed that he was lying to her, she said nothing.
She simply nodded.
Matthew crouched down momentarily and struck the frozen domain he had cast to deactivate it.
There was no danger now; practically all of them had been eliminated in a very short time. He was just curious about something.
He struck the ground beneath him with great force, his power shaking the surroundings, but he dug deeper into the earth, traveling like a burrowing animal.
Matthew could feel that, suddenly, his power encountered a void from going so deep. It was as if suddenly there was no earth to burrow into, and it was flying.
‘I suspected as much,’ he thought.
“What did you find?” Isla asked when she saw him.
“There’s probably some kind of cistern down here that contains large amounts of blood,” he said suddenly.
“A cistern with blood?” She was in shock.
“Yes,” Matthew nodded. “Earlier, we found something similar in the Becker Clan’s territory. A place with a sea of blood inside, underground.”
She frowned. “What are their intentions?” she asked.
“Who knows.”
He realized this only because much more blood had flowed toward the guy he was fighting than he should have been able to control by drawing it from the bodies of victims. They weren’t powerful enough to control the blood in so many people’s bodies, so there had to be more blood nearby.
It couldn’t be the blood on the ground, left over from the days-long battles. Most of that blood had seeped into the earth and rocks, and the rest had dried up along the way.
Extracting dried blood from rocks was impossible for these guys, so the correct answer was that there was more blood nearby.
While they were talking, Sophia came up behind them.
“Matt.” She greeted him.
“Sophia, I want to ask you something.”
“What is it?”
“How many wars have there been in this place, as far as you can remember in history?”
“In this area?” She thought about it for a moment. “There must have been many. There were wars during the early years of the founding of the different kingdoms. Also, humans once contested this territory when they tried to expand, and later by the devourers.”
“The devourers and humans wanted to fight over these lands?” he asked, surprised.
There was quite a distance between the human empire and this place, not to mention between the devourers’ territory. The difference was too significant.
But she nodded. “Yes. About 4 or 5 million years ago. That’s when the Wagner Clan broke its neutrality and joined other clans to expel them from these lands. Although the wars between kingdoms stopped about 2 or 3 million years ago, with the Independent Clans’ decision to definitively step aside from the war over the inheritance tokens.”
Matthew nodded.
‘That being the case, I’m not surprised there’s one of these places to collect blood here. I wonder how much blood is down there and where the entrance is,’ he thought.
He explained to Sophia what he had just discovered and also asked her to investigate where the entrance might be.
The war ended during the explanation. There wasn’t much these guys could do against so much power, one that froze them, another that prevented them from moving, and the rest that decapitated them.
Everyone looked at Matthew after he killed the last of them.
Gray, Martin, Alice’s grandfather, and the others approached him and threw several heads of powerful men on the ground before kneeling.
“The war is over,” Gray said.
Matthew smiled. “This is my first strike against the new powers of the world. As there was a first, there will soon be a second and a third, until I can exterminate them. But for now, we must develop ourselves,” he declared and looked at Patrick.
“Choose the most talented members of your clans and bring them to me as soon as possible. I will give you a generous reward,” he said. “Keep your troops close by, because we must recover part of the human territory. Reinforce the borders with the other kingdoms and territories, because those guys are very powerful. Other than that, I have nothing more to say.”
At the end of his short speech, he looked at Sophia. “Take me to see Lord Frederick.”
