Chapter 636: Capital under attack
After finishing sending messages to the Four Cities below the Mountain and beginning to orchestrate a superior plan, Matthew and Charlotte walked over to the Capital City.
No one noticed them, but they walked through the city and soon came to a church, where they entered and went inside until they reached the basement.
Some people were waiting for them there. Women and a man.
“Lord. Ma’am.” They bowed. They wore robes of the strange religion professed by those of this church, and their insignia of rank were illuminated on each of their chests.
They were true members of this place, who had been made members of the Dietrich Clan.
He nodded toward them and looked at them.
“Have you sent the information to the local churches? We’ve cut off all the information going out of this place to the Central City, so there won’t be any problems.”
“Yes, Lord. It is surprising, but thanks to the fact that the churches have been on alert for some time now, we are now more than ready to launch an attack at any time. We have weapons and supplies to spare in every branch, because of the believers’ offerings.”
Matthew smiled. “Not bad.”
In every city he had visited, he had turned the higher-level church members into part of his subordinates.
The good and the best thing about dealing with an extremist church like this is that if its leaders said: kill someone, all its believers would go do it.
That’s also the dangerous thing about it, but in this case, he had played his cards too well. No one had any idea who he really was or how his powers worked. Besides, none of them would expect the most dangerous woman in the human race, the daughter of the Great Adams, to actually be his wife.
That’s why the plans were so good and they had managed to advance so effectively.
“Lord, when do we attack? I would recommend doing it within these two weeks. We don’t need the help of the governors to wipe out that city. If you and the Lady are there, coupled with our Church forces, we will turn the Capital City upside down. They will think the Church has betrayed them, so they will attack and kill, and that will weaken the enemy forces. From afar, we can reap the benefits and seek Lord Jack.” Suggested the man, the leader of the local church.
Matthew smiled and patted him on the head. “I like smart people. Not for nothing are you the leader of the Church in the whole Kingdom. That’s just what I was thinking.” He smiled and turned to leave.
“1 week is the real deadline, when the clouds and haze settle over the Mountain Capital. There we shall see what these of the capital are made of. Prepare your men and the church for this, but let nothing be revealed until the last day.”
“Very well, my lord. I will prepare everything.”
Matthew and Charlotte left the church and went to rest. Soon, the fun would begin for them.
—
A week passed quickly.
And on the last night of that week, rumors in the cities began to hit the populace.
Had the Mountain Capital betrayed the Church? Was a war being orchestrated on the sly?
Everything pointed to it happening within a week. The Capitals under the Mountain were gathering men, that was certain. But few could understand the real motives.
They suspected they were going to attack the Mountain Capital, but the lack of information made them wonder: Why? Who betrayed whom, and what would be the consequences of that?
Whatever happened, the Mountain Capital still had powerful people; among those, it was rumored that one of the Pillars was there.
So what the hell was going to happen?
Besides, the church’s movements were a bit strange to outsiders who didn’t belong to the church.
That was why many had decided to lock themselves away and wait out the storm; they didn’t want to die.
The leaders of the mountain capital were the most confused by this. So they sent messages to the Central City of the World, to seek information on whatever was going on.
That same night, when no one expected it, a large number of troops of the Churches came out of the Four Capitals at the foot of the Mountain.
The leaders of the Churches directed men or women, everyone who wanted to support a brutal attack.
Three of the Governors who had decided to support were taken by surprise. They immediately understood what the leaders wanted to do: take them by surprise at a time when rumors pointed that an attack could start within a week.
Moreover, thanks to some quick messengers, the governors had one last chance to decide whether to attack or not.
In any case, the troops were enough to wipe out the Mountain Capital.
–
While that happened in the small capitals, the Great Mountain Capital suddenly became chaotic.
Troops emerged from the church, and numerous people began to wreak havoc on the city, killing guards and many more people.
The attack was brutal and occurred in the wee hours of the morning, when everyone was resting.
“We are under attack!” A great shout echoed through the Castle, alerting everyone that something big was happening.
The bells of the Castle and the City began to ring, and numerous guards and people of power began to prepare.
But these were the days of the year when the fog became so thick over the city that it was hard to even think that they could defend themselves when they could not see anything. Their rivals were already prepared to fight in these circumstances.
Therefore, in a matter of 1 hour, a great slaughter broke out in all the military command quarters and also in different houses of important nobles, in addition to the Castle.
This caused the leaders of the Kingdom to gather at the top of the Castle in an emergency.
“Can someone explain to me what is happening?” the King asked with a frown.
At his side were strategists, ministers, and important people of the kingdom. But none of them could give him an answer since they all had the same question.
Though there was one who stood out to speak.
