Chapter 635: Talking about a betrayal
The man in front of him, the City Governor, looked at it in a daze.
‘The Seal of the Central City of the World?’ He almost choked. Being the only one who recognized it out of everyone present.
He immediately turned away. “Get out. Take everyone away and leave me alone.” He grumbled through his teeth.
Although these men could not tell which seal it was, they all understood that their master was angry with them. Although they didn’t understand why, just knowing that he wanted them to leave was enough to make them do so.
Within seconds, only three people were left, and the Governor invited them in.
“It’s just a quick message. We still have more trips to make. You don’t need to prepare anything for us,” Matthew said, stopping him from making coffee.
The Governor nodded gently. ‘The envoys are looking a little impatient.’ He thought, but gave the matter no further thought.
That they came was already surprising and even more so at such a crucial moment. Something was happening.
He sat across from them, waiting for them both to speak.
“We were sent to the Four Minor Capitals to inform them that a great mission is brewing against the Mountain Capitals,” Matthew said, opening the conversation.
The Governor was stunned. “Would that man dare attack us being so far away?”
“No.” Matthew smiled under his hood. “It’s not him. We have discovered that the Mountain Capital is actually following his orders and has been plotting a mission against the Four Capitals to retake control of the Kingdom.” Following this, he brought out several scrolls with evidence reflecting what he was saying.
“That is why our leaders have said: we will eliminate the Mountain Capital for betraying us.”
The Governor choked up briefly. “Impossible.” He muttered, reading the information in front of him.
The problem was that everything those scrolls said, he could corroborate that it did happen.
“The Mountain Capital, along with the King, betrayed us? But…” He tried to question, but Matthew would not allow it.
“Have any of you seen Jack Allen recently? When was the last time you saw him?” she asked.
He frowned. “When we caught him was the last time… Then we’re not allowed to see him, to prevent him from being able to use his strange abilities.”
At this point, Charlotte spoke up.
“Yes.” She smiled, but spoke with a slight hint of anger. “That’s because he is no longer in our territories. He was given to Matthew Dietrich as currency in exchange for sparing the Mountain Capital. That’s why this is happening.” He revealed.
This fits in perfectly with how little the governor knows about Jack Allen these days. Not just him; all four governors knew the same thing.
Some even doubted that they had killed Jack Allen.
‘So they actually gave him back to Matthew Dietrich…’
Suddenly, anger and frustration grew inside him. The evidence was in front of him, and so was the reason for the betrayal.
His body seemed to tremble slightly from anger.
That was an extremely dangerous mission where many of his men died. After all, it meant facing the territory of one of the three strongest Heirs, which already posed a staggering difficulty.
In addition, several races in the kingdom were allied with him, which meant facing them as well.
It was such a dangerous and destructive mission for them. How could it have ended that way?
What meaning was the King giving to his men then? Was he saying that his four governors were not important? That men lost in battle did not matter?
Besides…wasn’t it a betrayal of the gods they worshipped? Wasn’t it a betrayal of the very religion that put race above all else?
Matthew smiled beneath his dark cloak. ‘Not bad, I should say. They’re easy enough to fool. I should thank the Central City of the World. Since they made it so simple for me here.’
“So our mission here is simple.” Matthew said after calming down. “Two weeks from now, two Pillar Leaders will come here to bring order. They will come accompanied by skilled people who will immobilize our enemies from within. We will wipe out the Mountain Capital City.”
The Governor frowned. It was a bold mission and very difficult to carry out without mistakes. But…
“What do you expect us to do? Do you know whether one of them has also betrayed us?” he asked.
“They haven’t, but since we can’t trust many people these days, we decided that the mission will start from the church. From within, we will launch an attack against the Mountain Capital. Anyone who opposes this will be treated as a heretic. So, if you, the governors, still have us in your eyes, I hope you will join the attack. With you or without you, we will still destroy the capital.” He declared firmly.
His words and tone of voice revealed a palpable anger that made the Governor flinch.
He was afraid.
Matthew then stood up. “If you want to earn the favor of the church, remember that the church always accepts those who are sincere. You don’t need to reveal it, go, ask for your forgiveness, and come back. We realized that it is useless for you to shout to the winds that you donated a lot to the church to reveal your loyalty, for those in the mountain capital also did so and ended up betraying us. Show your loyalty with your actions, not with empty words.”
Then he turned and started to leave, together with Charlotte. Before he left, he turned to look at him.
“Central will spare no expense in helping those who seek to fulfill the church. Good luck.”
Then he walked out.
–
“Do you think it will work?” Matthew asked, looking at Charlotte with a helpless smile. He had said all that, but the truth was, he had no idea if that would do the trick.
She shrugged.
“No one can understand people’s hearts, so I can’t give you an answer to that.”
“Hahaha, you’re right.”
She smiled. “Well, anyway, what we have now is enough to destroy the capital. The rest will just be appetizers to weaken the enemy forces.”
“Well, it’s always better to watch them kill each other than to bring our men into it, isn’t it? It’s too bad the war with the Murphys is moving so fast. With so little time, destroying a kingdom from within is hard, even more so because Ava isn’t around. Sigh.”
“Hahaha, it’s good to have people who can control different branches of a society, isn’t it? One controls the royalty; one controls the underworld. Both are the two sides of the coin.”
“Hehe.” He smiled proudly for his girls.
“But thanks to the war against the Murphys, we can move freely here.” She spoke.
“Yes, ” he agreed. “With this, I can confirm that they haven’t had enough men lately.”
“So, you think the mission after this one will be successful?”
“Of course.” he replied confidently. “That mission will be easier than this one. Trust me.”
She nodded and averted her gaze to the front. “If I didn’t trust you, I couldn’t trust anyone. Now I feel like I can walk freely to the front without worrying about the road, because you’re there to pave it. It feels… good.”
He looked sideways at her. He wanted to hug her, but knew they might be spying on them, so he restrained himself.
They both continued with the mission.
