Capítulo 309: The Elder’s Test by Ophelia!

Chapter 309

He glanced at the ceiling, lost in weary reflection. “This war… when will it finally end?”

He had lived long enough to see entire generations vanish to battlefields. The memories still haunted him—friends devoured by fiends, cities reduced to ash, screams echoing through smoke.

He had fought his whole life, sharpened his mind and body to exorcise demons. His hands still remembered the weight of the talismans, the heat of burning sigils, the taste of blood in the air after each fight.

And yet… even after all that sacrifice, nothing had changed.

“How did you get there, kid?” he whispered under his breath, his tone carrying a strange mix of frustration and reluctant awe.

It didn’t make sense. Even trained infiltrators struggled to breach the demon borders—and this boy had done it unknowingly?

The distance alone was insurmountable. The borderlands were heavily fortified, the rift energy unpredictable. For someone his age to simply end up there…

The elder’s eyes widened slightly. A new thought crept in.

‘Could he have used some sort of teleportation artifact? It makes sense… those heretics were incubating a chimera, they were strong and resourceful, perhaps they had managed to obtain such an item from their cult? Or maybe a demon itself?’

“Elder, what are your orders? How should we handle this matter since…”

Even the subordinate was sharing the same troubled look as the elder; this matter was really too bizarre and sensitive.

They couldn’t just do as they pleased. This was the demon’s land they were talking about—if they made a mistake, there would be countless lives at stake.

“We will have to get him back, one way or another. He’s the young master and one of the potential clan heirs; he must be brought back.”

The elder commented seriously. No matter how dire the situation was, the fact remained that Oliver was the true blood of the Mystic Purge Clan.

Not to mention his extraordinary status—just his blood and flesh were more precious than any normal treasure.

If a demon were to get their hands on him, it would lead to very disastrous consequences, given Oliver had yet to go through his baptism ceremony.

“Yes, I understand.” The assistant nodded seriously. He would obey what was told.

Even if countless lives were at stake, his expression did not change much. He was trained to be cold-blooded since birth.

And their clan had never feared bloodshed or violence; if anything, the exorcists would be eager to initiate the attack as soon as the orders were issued.

Moreover, if they couldn’t even save their young master, then they were truly unworthy of their reputation and name.

They served as the extensions of the main lineage, acting as their blades and shields under any circumstances.

Looking at his subordinates’ serious, ready-to-die expressions, the elder shook his head.

He could feel the thirst of young blood. He was once like this too.

However, this matter needed something more than just brute force and violence.

“First, check with the information department about who is currently undercover on missions in the demon lands. Get me a list.” He looked at his assistant and added, “And secondly, form a small team. Choose those who specialize in covert operations and let me know. Be selective—the key is quality over quantity here.”

The man listened carefully and understood; so this was what the elder was intending.

It was indeed very efficient.

But…

“Elder, may I add that a small team alone might not be sufficient to track down the young master in the vast demon lands.”

He felt it was necessary to raise this doubt and get it clarified early.

“Ah, that. Yes, I have considered the possibility, but don’t worry, I have some arrangements in mind. For now, focus on this. I will fill you in on the details with the team later.”

“Understood!” He bowed again and excused himself from the room, leaving the elder alone in charge.

“Mistress Ophelia, were you already aware of this?” He could not help but wonder.

Even after living for centuries, he was still not able to understand her at all. She had been there for as long as he could remember, even before him.

He wondered about her intentions, whether this was a test for him.

‘Using your own child to test us… she’s not called the Witch of Death for nothing after all.’

He had a bitter expression on his face as he stroked his beard. His memory of her being present on the battlefield itself was extremely limited.

But each time she appeared, there was endless slaughter. The demons, no matter how mighty, were butchered like pigs.

It was short yet cruel.

He had never seen her display an ounce of emotion in his centuries-long life.

She had shown no affection even to her own children.

Although he felt that ever since the fourth young master and young miss were born, there was a stir in her demeanor—of course, it was just his assumption.

He didn’t believe he was strong enough to read her.

But his instincts told him she didn’t treat Oliver and Nadia the same as her other children.

Especially Nadia—she was being given special attention by her.

Considering her enormous talent and potential, he could understand. She had the highest chances of becoming the next clan head out of anyone.

But for Oliver, it was a bit weird.

Why?

Oliver was nothing special. He was born weak, far weaker than even the branch families. It would not be a mistake to call him a common human with his meager amount of espera.

If they had to point out something, then maybe he was a little bit more talented in the strategic area? But even that was nothing significant in his eyes; they had children with exceptional intellectual talent.

So what made him worth the attention?

He had gone through all the reports about him. Since his birth, Oliver was completely discarded and cut off from any privileges the other young heirs enjoyed from the beginning.

He was only an heir in name at best.

But during the demon hunt ceremony, he displayed unexpected results, standing out the most among the best, even defeating his older siblings.

And after that, his situation suddenly improved?

Not only that, even the personal maid serving him was planted by the elder in charge of trials in the clan.

It was all extremely weird. What could have happened in that amount of time that he suddenly became like this.
