Capítulo 239: It’s basically a frogmen nursery!

Weihao didn’t even have the chance to lift his hands. Nanzhi finished off the remaining mutants.

“Baoyin! Feng Ran!” Nanzhi called out, her voice tinged with anxiety.

Hearing her voice, Baoyin turned around and rushed toward her, hugging her around the waist.

“Sister Nan, you’re here! While you were inside, we encountered the same mutant frogmen Emperor Fatty and his goons faced. There were eleven of them. But don’t worry—we took care of most of them!”

Baoyin’s eyes shone as if she were waiting for praise.

“Chi chi!” Little Snowball climbed onto Nanzhi’s shoulder and chirped proudly.

Their injuries were only minor. Nanzhi was glad she had left Snowball with Baoyin earlier.

Thinking of that, Nanzhi patted the little guy. “Thank you.”

“Chi chi!” The adorable white spider rubbed against her hand.

Feng Ran quickly pulled the clingy Baoyin away.

“You’re covered in green slime. Look—sister-in-law is now covered in stinky slime too!” Feng Ran clicked his tongue.

Baoyin finally noticed the mess she had made.

“Oh. I forgot.” She quickly withdrew from Nanzhi’s embrace. “I’m sorry, Sister Nan. I got your clothes dirty.”

But Nanzhi kept her in place. She didn’t mind the green slime at all.

“Well done,” she said, stroking Baoyin’s hair.

Earlier, it had been her oversight. She had been overly cautious and hadn’t allowed Baoyin and the others to join in exploring the water facility, in case a stronger mutant appeared midway.

Yet the real danger had been outside the facility instead.

She needed to be more careful in the future.

Receiving Nanzhi’s praise, Baoyin beamed. Her happiness was written all over her face.

A few steps away, Feng Ran’s eyes darted between the two women and the silent Weihao.

Weihao immediately guessed his thoughts and shot him a sharp glare.

“Hmph.” Feng Ran scowled. “You’re no fun!”

Weihao only rolled his eyes, but still offered a sincere compliment.

“Good job.”

Hearing the brief praise, Feng Ran dropped his scowl and said loudly in a teasing tone,

“Aiya, Brother Lin must be envious of Sister-in-law but too shy to ask for a hug! That was my oversight. Don’t worry, Brother Lin—next time I’ll make sure we’re alone so you can give me a hug—”

All of a sudden, the mutant corpse near his feet twitched.

Feng Ran screamed in a high-pitched voice.

“Ahh!”

He reflexively kicked it away.

Nanzhi and Baoyin broke their embrace at his scream.

Only then did Feng Ran realize it was a false alarm.

Noticing Weihao lifting the corner of his lips, Feng Ran instantly knew it was him.

This petty guy!

Feng Ran grumbled under his breath.

At that moment, Bingwen and Hei Qian arrived.

Judging by their appearances, they must have faced the same type of mutants.

Weihao’s expression turned serious.

“How many were there?”

“We were luckier than Miss Baoyin and Brother Feng—we only fought four,” Bingwen replied, also explaining why they had failed to send reports through the walkie-talkies.

They didn’t know whether the mutants had deliberately targeted the walkie-talkies to cut off communication or if it had been a total coincidence.

If it was the former, then these mutants were intelligent—and that was dangerous.

Additionally, if he and Hei Qian had faced dozens instead of just four, they wouldn’t have escaped unscathed, Bingwen thought.

Weihao and Nanzhi exchanged a glance.

It seemed they needed to leave this place soon.

But before that, they had to deal with the frog eggs to prevent future trouble.

“Let me heal your wounds first,” Nanzhi said.

“Please help Hei Qian first, Sister-in-law,” Bingwen requested.

“Alright.” Nanzhi nodded. She had been thinking the same. Hei Qian’s wound was the most urgent.

A short while later, Nanzhi showed them what they had discovered earlier.

Feng Ran stared at the pool of eggs, his face darkening.

“Are you kidding me? There are even more of them?!”

Are you telling me the mutant frogmen I killed were just a warm-up?!

Baoyin watched as Nanzhi used her mental power to fish the frog eggs out of the pool. Inside the clustered gelatinous spheres, tadpoles squirmed, sensing danger.

They burst from their eggs, opening their tiny mouths.

Weihao and Nanzhi were already prepared. The tadpoles were killed before they could spray acidic water.

They dropped lifelessly onto the floor. Baoyin couldn’t even estimate the number.

“This is just… too much!” It’s basically a frogman nursery!

“We can’t leave this here, Brother Lin!” Bingwen said, horrified at the thought of these eggs hatching and turning humans into mutant frogmen. The casualties would be unimaginable.

Moreover, judging by their appearance, these frog eggs were close to hatching.

Hei Qian nodded, his face pale.

“I know,” Weihao said.

Nanzhi already had a plan.

Weihao couldn’t use lightning freely for three reasons: first, this was a wet, enclosed environment; second, lightning might trigger the algae nodes’ defensive mechanisms and release paralytic substances; and lastly, it might cause mass hatching.

They could only eliminate the frog eggs slowly.

Although the process was tedious and troublesome, Nanzhi enjoyed listening to the EXP notifications ringing in her mind.

[+10 EXP]

[+10 EXP]

[…]

As the EXP accumulated, her smile grew wider.

It took them more than five hours to completely eliminate all the frog eggs.

During the process, Nanzhi discovered something other than algae and vines.

At the muddy bottom were several small objects—egg casings. They were tiny, even smaller than the frog eggs: dark, shriveled, thin, and brittle. They didn’t resemble broken frog egg casings, and whatever had been inside was long gone, making them difficult to identify.

Her eyes narrowed. She collected a few samples, planning to study them later.

Aside from the three pools, she also carefully checked the walls, bumps, drains, filtration nodes, overflow channels, water inlets and outlets, other pools, basins, and every area where stagnant water might collect.

Nanzhi made sure not to miss a single egg. She even resorted to storing all the pool water in her inventory slot, since it didn’t allow living creatures inside.

Unfortunately, that method didn’t grant any EXP—otherwise, she would have exploited the loophole.

Only after she was completely certain did she finally let out a sigh of relief.

As for the algae vines, Nanzhi collected them as well. She planned to see whether something useful could be extracted from them.
