Chapter 579: Ingrid vs. Katharina

The first impact shook the ground. Flames and shadows collided, triggering small bursts of energy that sent dust and sparks flying into the air. Ingrid quickly dodged a flaming blade that was thrusting directly toward her, the energy of her shadows absorbing the heat and transforming it into a momentum that launched her backward, allowing her to land in a fighting stance.

“Not bad,” Katharina said, watching intently, her defiant smile forming a thin line on her face. “But still not enough.”

With a fluid motion, Katharina stomped her feet, releasing a wave of heat that spread in all directions, shattering small pieces of stone and earth around her. Ingrid felt the pressure, but she maintained her focus, concentrating on the shadows to create a partial barrier. Some of the energy hit her defenses, but it didn’t paralyze her. She responded with a nimble leap, spinning in the air, and the shadows shot out like whips that sliced through the air toward the redhead.

Katharina dodged gracefully, raising a column of fire that turned the whips to smoke before they could even touch her. “That’s better,” she said, a glint of excitement in her eyes. “I like opponents who force me to concentrate.”

The combat became a deadly dance. Fire and shadow intertwined, each attack met with a creative defense, each movement testing limits. Ingrid advanced with the pent-up fury of kidnapping and humiliation, each blow charged with the intent to destroy. Katharina responded with intelligence and experience, controlling the fire with almost surgical precision.

In a moment, Ingrid created a series of shadow blades that advanced simultaneously, seeking to surround Katharina. The redhead laughed, deflecting and absorbing some of the blades with bursts of heat, while releasing new flames in circular waves. The burst of energy raised enough dust to obscure her vision, but Ingrid maintained her concentration, using her senses to sense Katharina’s presence and calculate her every step.

“Impressive,” Katharina murmured, dodging a shadow attack that sliced through the air like a razor. “But you still rely too much on brute force. Control is more important.”

“And you rely too much on blind trust,” Ingrid replied, breathing heavily but maintaining her stance. “Let’s see who breaks first.”

They both lunged forward simultaneously, a burst of power building at the point of impact. Shadows and fire intertwined, heat and darkness colliding with enough force to send sparks and shards of stone flying in every direction. Ingrid was thrown backward, rolling across the ground and rising quickly, the shadows around her pulsing as if they felt the challenge personally.

Katharina didn’t miss a beat. She rushed forward, the ground beneath her feet sizzling with each step, and threw up a wall of flames to block Ingrid’s surprise attack before leaping over her and unleashing a series of quick strikes with her hands, each one engulfed in concentrated fire. Ingrid dodged and absorbed some of the energy again, but felt the impact directly on her shoulder, a shock that staggered her.

“Huh,” Ingrid grumbled, adjusting her posture. “You learned too quickly.”

Katharina gave a short but energetic laugh. “You’re giving me a hard time, and I love it.”

The duel continued, the speed increasing with each second. The exchange of attacks became almost a blur: shadows stretching, fire exploding, the ground cracking under the impact, the wind thickening with heat and pressure. Ingrid’s every move was filled with hatred and determination; Katharina’s every response, precision and strategy.

At one point, Ingrid managed to fool Katharina with a quick feint: the shadows around her feet created an illusion of movement to the left, while she advanced to the right with her katana pointed. Katharina tried to react, but the illusion made her hesitate for a moment—long enough for Ingrid to land a deep cut on the redhead’s arm.

“Huh!” Katharina exclaimed, looking at the wound with a painful smile. “You’ve really learned how to use shadows to manipulate perception. Impressive.”

“That’s not enough,” Ingrid replied, anger bubbling in her veins. “I’ll end this now!”

The shadows around Ingrid intensified, forming grotesque-looking monsters: wolves, serpents, and humanoid figures, each advancing with sharp claws and fangs. Katharina took a step back, erecting a barrier of fire that grew until it became almost solid, absorbing some of the attacks. But still, some figures managed to break through, attacking Katharina with brute force.

“Okay, okay,” Katharina said, taking a deep breath and controlling the fire. “I think it’s time to show you what I learned in the forest.”

She concentrated the heat in her body, creating a fiery aura that expanded rapidly. The temperature rose dramatically, making Ingrid feel each blow of the shadows heavier, each movement slower. Katharina advanced, and the flames surrounding her transformed into sharp blades, slicing through the ground and shadows with surgical precision.

Ingrid tried to resist, but the pressure was intense. The heat burned, the shadows distorted, and each movement required superhuman effort. Still, Ingrid’s determination did not waver. She advanced with the katana, dodging a direct blow, absorbing some of the energy, and delivering a series of slashes that forced Katharina back a few steps.

“That’s it!” Katharina exclaimed, smiling broadly. “Finally, someone who makes me sweat.”

The two stared at each other, breathing heavily, their bodies covered in small wounds, burns, and cuts. The ground was scarred with fissures, burns, and holes left by the impacts. The air was dense, hot, charged with almost tangible energy.

“Don’t think it’s over,” Ingrid said, her voice hoarse and filled with fury. “I’ll still kill him!”

Katharina laughed, tilting her head. “Vergil? He’s not here yet, dear. This is just between us. But… I understand. When he appears, maybe you’ll finally get the revenge you desire.”

Ingrid gritted her teeth, trying to transform her hatred into strength. She gathered all the energy from her shadows, forming a gigantic black serpent that advanced on Katharina with impressive speed. Katharina took a deep breath, sensing the threat, and raised a wall of fire as tall as a tower, absorbing the impact and spreading flames in all directions.

“Who would have thought a simple test could turn into a complete disaster?” Katharina said, smiling as she absorbed the serpent’s remaining energy. “But still, you’re doing very well.”

The fight dragged on, the intensity growing with each passing second. Ingrid’s shadows continued to fight as if they had a will of their own, while Katharina’s fire responded with equal ferocity. Both moved at an almost superhuman pace, dodging, attacking, absorbing energy, retreating, and advancing in a deadly ballet.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the two stepped aside, exhausted, breathing heavily, their eyes shining with adrenaline and mutual respect.

“I think we’ve reached the point where neither of us can continue without getting seriously hurt,” Katharina said, laughing and partially extinguishing the flames still dancing around her.

“I agree,” Ingrid replied, leaning on the katana, her body still trembling with exertion. “But know this… this isn’t over.”
