Capítulo 1688: The Last Quest

Both Lupus and Gary blinked a few times as Kai said those words out loud. The silence in the room was suddenly heavy, and they could even hear Kai’s heart beating in a frantic, uneven rhythm. He was genuinely panicked, a look they rarely saw on him.

“Wait, if you’re talking about the full moon… is that really such a big issue?” Gary asked, trying to find a hole in the logic. “We’ve been here beyond the last full moon and nothing happened. Not a single person changed. And the pack members themselves said before that the full moon doesn’t affect them, or at least, they insinuated that it was just another night.”

“You’re right,” Kai said, his eyes darting toward the window. “But think about it. The person who has the power to turn others into Alphas, the reason why you and Lupus had to make those Vows with Unzoku in the first place, it’s all because of the Curse of the Full Moon. It’s the source of the power and the burden.”

Kai paced the small room, his hands trembling slightly. “Back then, Bliss even mentioned that she wondered if Unzoku had done anything to the two of them with his last attack. Right before he was sealed, Unzoku shouted that he would literally curse the two of them. At some point, the Curse of the Full Moon has to become a reality for these Werewolves. With Unzoku gone, his final spiteful act has to be this. It could only be this moment.”

It clicked for all of them then. The logic was sound and terrifying. Maybe because they had been so focused on just getting rid of Unzoku and trying to find a way to get out of this space, they hadn’t thought too much about what was going to happen next. They had assumed the battle was the end, but they were still here in this world for a reason.

“So tomorrow night, then… when the full moon comes out, all of them are going to be forced to transform for the first time and in a bloodthirsty state?” Gary said, his voice dropping. “And they’re right in the middle of a city, filled with people left, right, and center. It’s going to be absolute chaos. They’re going to kill so many people.”

“Not just that. This city has guards, and they have Bluebird and his knights,” Lupus added, his face pale. “The knights won’t know that at the end of the night, the Werewolves will stop their rampage and turn back. They’ll see monsters slaughtering civilians. There is a good chance a large portion of the pack will be killed in the crossfire. The last gift given by Unzoku is at its worst now because no one knows it’s coming. And the same goes for Steve and his Pack as well… at least they’re away from the city, but the villagers they are near and all the trust they had built up over years? It will be gone just like that.”

Part of Kai wondered how, in a world where Werewolves were finally being more accepted, they eventually came to be forgotten and feared, needing to go back into hiding in the modern era. He might have just found his answer. This was the turning point.

“The reason why we are still here, I imagine, is because the medallion still wants to show us what happened during this specific time,” Kai replied. “If my guess is right, then tomorrow, when the day comes, we should finally get a quest from the system.”

“But what will the quest even be?” Lupus asked. “To save the city? To kill our friends?”

“I have no idea,” Gary replied, looking down at his own hands. “In the first place, there’s also us to consider. Even though we’re not originally from this world, we are also Werewolves ourselves. Now that the curse has been triggered for everyone, will the same thing happen to the three of us tomorrow? How are we meant to even help people if we can’t control ourselves?”

This was a terrifying thought that Kai hadn’t even considered until this very moment. He had just assumed they would be unaffected since they were the “players” at the center of this memory, but they really did have to consider all possibilities. If they turned, they would just be three more monsters in the streets.

“We can’t just let all of this happen,” Gary said, standing up and clenching his fists. “I know we now know the chances of this being a real world are fake… but it’s real to them. The interactions, the talks we have had with these people… they aren’t just data.”

Gary looked at his friends. “We’ve seen these people cry, laugh, and even get annoyed with each other over the smallest things. If they lose their loved ones, if Jack and the others are responsible for killing those in this city, then these versions of themselves will feel like they really have committed a crime. They’ll never recover from that. We have to stop them. We have to tell Jack and Steve what will happen tomorrow.”

“And, we have a way to stop it,” Gary continued, his mind racing. “As long as they’re low on energy and locked away in the dungeons, they won’t be able to harm anyone. We just have to convince them.”

“And do you think they will actually accept that?” Lupus asked skeptically. “A big festival is coming up, a night where nothing bad has ever happened to them before. You think Jack and his pack, even Steve and his, will just go ahead and listen to us and lock themselves in cages?”

“They might not,” Gary said, heading for the door. “But I’ve never just given up because something seemed hard. I’m going to tell them everything, and we’ll find a way to stop this massacre.”
