Chapter 1588: The First of Their Kind

When Steve made the decision to move the camp from the isolated safety of the mountaintop down into the exposed valley, it felt insignificant to many outsiders, but for him, it was a massive, terrifying first step into the wider world. He knew that the feelings of every member of the pack were different regarding this decision. Some had lived on that mountain for years; it was their true, hidden home. Moving meant abandoning safety for the hope of a future. For Steve, the only way to truly integrate his people into the world was to expose them, but he understood that exposure also meant welcoming dangerous visitors.

And not long after the move, that danger arrived. Unzoku himself appeared, seemingly drawn to the concentrated presence of the pack like a moth to a flame.

The appearance of the massive Werewolf immediately unsettled the entire camp. His form was colossal, similar to their own Werewolf shapes yet grotesquely different. Parts of his body looked more like a feral beast, a primal mutation, and he even possessed strange, intimidating horn-like features protruding from his head. His sheer, palpable aura of power caused even the toughest, most seasoned Werewolves to scream in fear.

The terror was compounded by something stranger: some of them weren’t even able to move. A crippling, unseen force held them in place, rooted to the spot by pure dominance.

“Another pack. I knew something had to be up,” Unzoku boomed, his voice resonating with ancient authority. He surveyed the bustling camp with cold, judgmental eyes. “It had been too long for nothing to happen in this land. And to create a place as large as this… you must have been hiding for a very long amount of time, little wolves.”

Rushing through the suddenly silent camp, Steve, along with his frequent allies, the most capable warriors who accompanied him on his quests, arrived on the scene simultaneously. The pack immediately assumed defensive positions. Some of them scrambled, taking cover on top of the crude, sturdy houses, pulling specialized, powerful bowsthat fired thick steel arrows forged from scavenged metals. Others held massive, long spears tightly in their hands, forming a defensive line from a distance. Then there were those who were close and on the ground, including Steve himself, who stood at the forefront, gripping his large, reinforced shield.

As he looked at the monstrous figure, Steve couldn’t help but gulp. The sheer scale and bestial features of the creature perfectly matched the most terrifying descriptions he had managed to dig up in his research. He was now face-to-face with the entity he had spent years trying to understand: Unzoku.

He came a lot earlier than I thought he would, Steve worried internally, his heart hammering against his ribs. It’s no wonder Rogan never wanted to descend the mountain, and even the external tasks we were doing, he was always so weary of things. He was terrified of this exact moment.

The crucial question that paralyzed him was this: with the entire pack arrayed against him, if a full-scale fight broke out, would they even be able to best him? Although Steve had managed to beat his rival, Rogan, he had only done so with the dedicated help of his brother, Jack. Facing this primal being felt like an entirely different category of threat.

“You think I would have walked in here in the middle of your camp, completely exposed, if I simply wanted to kill you all?” Unzoku scoffed, his gaze burning with scorn. He looked off toward one of the Werewolves positioned on a rooftop with a bow and arrow, and with an almost casual gesture, he fired out one of his fingernails.

The projectile was so fast it was barely a blur. As it hit the steel arrow the Werewolf was aiming, it cleanly cut through it, tearing the thick metal in half and causing the startled Werewolf to drop the useless bow onto the roof. There were a few Werewolves in the camp who could achieve a similar feat, flick their fingernails at a high velocity, but for the projectile itself to be that hard and sharp, instantly shredding tempered steel, was a terrifying first.

Right after Unzoku made his casual, devastating point, a few of the braver Werewolves reacted. The one holding a spear immediately hurled it with all his might toward Unzoku’s body. Unzoku barely moved, slightly shifting his shoulder. The formidable beast spear, a weapon that could pierce rock, simply ricocheted when hitting his hardened shoulder, falling harmlessly to the ground as if it had struck an impenetrable shield. And as for those who were close and on the ground, the moment they got within a certain distance, Unzoku lifted his hands out and slammed them on the floor. The impact not only shook the ground beneath them but, more terrifyingly, did something to their bodies, causing their limbs to fail. They fell like jelly, their muscles locking up, stopping them dead in their tracks.

“The only person I’m here to see is you,” Unzoku said, addressing Steve directly, his voice now dangerously soft. “I’m not here to fight, so why don’t we go some place where the two of us can talk without this pathetic little display?”

Accepting the strange proposition, Steve immediately raised his hand, the universal sign for his warriors to stand down. He had seen enough to know a frontal assault would be suicide. He then moved, heading toward the winding path that led to the summit of the mountain, the familiar, secluded fighting grounds, where only the two of them could talk in private.

Now that they were at the top, Steve still held on tightly to his shield, never lowering his guard, fearing the worst possible outcome.

“Why have you sought us out?” Steve demanded, his voice trembling only slightly. Then, he shook his head, correcting himself. “No, before even that, what are you… you seem like you’re the same as us, but then you seem fundamentally different at the same time. Tell me, you’re not another Alpha, right?”

Unzoku let out a low, guttural laugh that held no humor, just chilling contempt.

“An Alpha?” he scoffed. “That type of name doesn’t suit me. I am the first of your kind. The reason all of you are the way you are is because of me, and you should remember that as I speak to you.” Unzoku took a slow step closer, his monstrous shadow looming over Steve. “I’ve come here to give you an offer, a simple ultimatum: get rid of the other Alpha and their entire camp, or I will get rid of yours personally.”
