Capítulo 946: Chapter 944 Rakan’s Awakening 2

Kisha and Duke sat quietly in their chairs, keeping a close watch over Rakan. Duke made sure to maintain the ‘Ice Spikes’ surrounding him, but because of Rakan’s rapidly rising body temperature, the ice was melting faster than expected. He had to constantly conjure new spikes, pouring all his focus into ensuring the ice didn’t vanish all at once.

At the same time, he carefully controlled the melting process, preventing the water from soaking Rakan’s clothes; he didn’t want it freezing again when more ice formed around him. The last thing he wanted was anyone saying he lacked control over his power.

So, Duke went the extra mile, making sure that aside from Rakan’s own sweat, no other moisture touched his body. It was the least he could do.

After all, when he and Kisha awakened their abilities, there had been people there to wipe away their sweat and ease their discomfort. But Rakan had no one tending to him now, and Duke couldn’t just let him endure it completely alone, so he was being a little nicer to Rakan now.

Perhaps it was because they were forcing Rakan’s awakening instead of letting it happen naturally that he was suffering so much. After all, neither Kisha nor Duke had experienced pain like this during their own awakenings.

They had only fallen unconscious with a high fever, feeling as though molten magma flowed through their veins, yes, but nothing compared to what Rakan was enduring now.

Rakan was writhing on the ground, his body trembling uncontrollably in agony. Watching him like that, Duke could only think that the least he could do for the poor man was to keep him from being soaked by the melting ice water.

It wasn’t much, but it was the only comfort Duke could offer amid Rakan’s torment.

And so, Kisha and Duke kept their silent vigil over Rakan as he underwent his awakening. They even assumed they would have to wait until morning, as was usually the case with natural awakenings.

While watching over him, the two began discussing seriously how they would explain the situation once Rakan finally regained consciousness.

“Do you think we’ll even need to explain this? Almost everyone in our team is an awakened ability user, and those from Adam’s shelter must have already heard about awakenings before.”

“There’s really no need for an explanation. What we should be thinking about now is whether we’ll stay in this shelter for the night or head back home with Rakan,” Kisha said thoughtfully.

After all, both she and Duke still had plenty of unfinished work waiting for them at the base. Duke’s Biogas Project was at its most critical stage and was close to completion, while Kisha had several tasks piling up.

She needed to inscribe new magic scrolls after using one during the fight with the mutated zombie, and she also had to replenish the Stamina Boosters she’d distributed to the base’s warriors.

On top of that, she was planning to supply some to Sparrow and Vulture’s team as well, since she’d realized how much more dangerous the world had become after the first phase of her system mission. It was no longer just her facing these threats; perhaps this was what the “Beginning of the End Battle” they recently endured at HOPE Base truly meant.

And so, making sure that all her people were well-stocked and well-prepared was a necessity — especially since the STAUs must have used up a considerable amount of supplies during the recent defense battle to protect the shelter in Maple Leaf Town.

But before Kisha and Duke could decide on their next move, a sound interrupted their thoughts.

Knock… Knock… Knock…

A gentle, cautious knock echoed from the sturdy wooden door, halting Kisha and Duke’s discussion mid-sentence. Both turned their gaze toward the door before Kisha muttered softly, “It’s unlocked. Please, come in.”

She straightened in her seat, completely forgetting that Rakan was still sprawled on the floor. Duke, who was about to scoop Kisha onto his lap, caught sight of Rakan’s limp figure and sighed.

Instead of moving toward Kisha, he crouched down, grabbed Rakan by the collar, and dragged him behind the row of chairs where he wouldn’t be seen from the doorway.

Only after making sure Rakan was fully hidden did Duke finally stride over, lift Kisha from her seat, and settle her on his lap. By the time he finished his swift series of actions, the person outside, after a long moment of hesitation, finally pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The moment the door opened, the man was greeted by the sight of Duke shamelessly flirting with Kisha on his lap, or that’s how it looked in his eyes. He almost choked on his own saliva, instantly regretting his decision to come and call these two lovebirds.

“Brother-in-law…” Duke drawled teasingly, his tone dripping with amusement.

Keith, who now looked as if he had just swallowed a fly, stared at his sister and Duke in disbelief. He couldn’t stand seeing the two so lovey-dovey right before his eyes; it felt like he was being force-fed dog food, and far more than he could stomach.

“Grandma sent me to call you over. The food’s ready and the table’s been set…” Keith mumbled, his lips twitching in annoyance.

It was only then that he realized, maybe Grandma had sent him precisely because she knew his sister was with her husband. The old lady probably didn’t have the heart to disturb the lovebirds herself, nor did she want to risk witnessing whatever might be happening behind that closed door.

Unaware that Rakan was also in the room, Keith had already jumped to the conclusion that Kisha and Duke had sneaked into the office just to fool around like the newlyweds they were, completely inseparable no matter the time or place.

After all, he had just returned from the frontlines with his grandfather, where they’d been cleaning up the aftermath of the battle. They’d been called back for a meal before continuing their work, so that everyone could regain some strength to keep going.

Though none of them really had the appetite, the stench of decay and rot still clinging to their bodies from the battlefield made eating difficult. But with the amount of work left to do, they all knew they needed the meal if they wanted enough energy to carry on.

If Duke knew what Keith was thinking, he would’ve definitely snickered and kissed Kisha even more just to tease him. After all, Duke had already figured out that Keith was a total siscon, still sulking over the fact that his beloved sister had been “stolen” by him.

It was no wonder Keith couldn’t stand seeing the two being so lovey-dovey.

Now that Kisha had Duke, it meant Keith was no longer her baby brother or her favorite person. Duke would now become the center of Kisha’s attention, and Keith was still struggling to accept that.

After all, Kisha had been his emotional anchor ever since his mother’s passing, his source of comfort and stability. So when he suddenly found out that Kisha had married Duke, and so quickly at that, it left him completely lost for a while.

He might act like he’s fine now, but deep down, he is still trying to come to terms with it.

Duke, who fully understood what Keith was feeling, chose to act as if he didn’t notice. That way, Keith wouldn’t feel exposed or embarrassed for being a siscon who still relied so much on his sister.

Though Duke often appeared cold and indifferent, when it came to Kisha, he was deeply understanding, and that understanding naturally extended to her family as well.

He didn’t want Keith to feel awkward around him. And while there had been a few mishaps in the past, like when Keith accidentally walked in on their intimate moments, those incidents oddly helped ease the tension between them.

So Duke knew that calling out Keith’s insecurities would only backfire. Instead, he preferred to tease the young man by openly showing affection to Kisha, hoping it would help Keith get used to it little by little.

“That’s so sweet of my brother-in-law to come and call us for dinner,” Duke teased as he pinched Kisha’s side and shot Keith a smug grin before planting a quick kiss on Kisha’s cheek.

Seeing that, Kisha immediately knew Duke was deliberately pushing his luck in front of her brother. She gave him a light knock on the forehead with the back of her hand to make him stop teasing Keith, but Duke only chuckled in response.

Keith could only roll his eyes at the two of them. Without realizing it, he no longer felt that uncomfortable tension he used to feel whenever he saw Kisha with Duke. Now, it was more of an irritated kind of embarrassment, like he wanted to flee the scene as fast as possible.

Goosebumps even ran up his arms when Duke started openly flirting with his sister; that cold, stoic face of his just didn’t fit the act of a playful lover.
