Capítulo 942: Chapter 940 Compensation
At her command, the people seemed to come alive. As if someone had flipped a switch, they moved in a cheerful rush, hands busy, voices lively, faces struggling to hide their smiles of excitement. The once hesitant atmosphere quickly turned bustling and bright.
Amused, Kisha watched the lively scene unfold. Her system notifications kept popping up one after another, reporting the steady stream of Devotion she was receiving, until she finally had to set them on silent mode just to enjoy the moment in peace.
‘Why am I receiving Devotion points? Aren’t deities and gods the only ones capable of that? I’m just a mortal, so how can I possess something meant only for divine beings?’ Kisha wondered, though she knew 008 could hear her thoughts as well. It was as much a question to the system as it was to herself.
Yet, 008 remained silent, as if it hadn’t heard her, or perhaps because it truly didn’t have an answer. Maybe it wasn’t allowed to tell her. Either way, Kisha realized she wouldn’t be getting any explanation right now.
The longer she survived in this apocalypse under the watchful eyes of the gods, the stranger everything became. Mysteries kept piling up around her, and the more she tried to understand, the less sense it all seemed to make.
‘Since I don’t have an answer, it’s better to just let it be, out of mind, out of sight.’ Kisha sighed inwardly, forcing herself to refocus her thoughts.
Her grandmother, grandfather, and little brother were all busy with their assigned tasks, so Kisha made her way back to the meeting room with Duke. The real reason she’d brought her family out here was to gain experience and see the world beyond their safe haven, and it had already been fulfilled.
They had learned much, and so had she. The trip had been fruitful in more ways than one, and Kisha couldn’t help but feel satisfied with how things had turned out.
When she and Duke entered the meeting room, Sparrow, Vulture, and the others were already there, standing silently, watching them as if awaiting orders.
“Young Madam…” Sparrow began, his voice low and tinged with embarrassment. He had been sent here to assist the Maple Leaf Town and Adam’s people in dealing with the mutated zombie, a mission meant to demonstrate their base’s strength and attract potential allies from other settlements and bases.
Yet, despite working together with Vulture and the rest of the team, their combined efforts still weren’t enough. They had even needed to call for Kisha’s help in the end. The thought left a heavy weight on Sparrow’s chest, making him feel as though he had failed her expectations.
Unable to meet Kisha’s eyes, he stood there with his head lowered, like a scolded child awaiting reprimand.
Seeing Sparrow and Vulture’s downcast eyes, and even Rakan looking troubled, made them all seem pitiful in Kisha’s eyes. But to her, what happened today was something none of them could have predicted. Even if they had all worked together from the start, it was likely they still wouldn’t have been able to defeat that mutated zombie.
“It’s alright. We can treat this as a valuable lesson,” Kisha said calmly. “Although you didn’t manage to bring down that mutated zombie, you all held your ground and not a single member of the team was hurt or killed. That alone is already a victory in my eyes.”
“I sent you out here to gain real experience, to see the world beyond the safety of our base and keep your abilities from rusting. And that’s exactly what you’ve done.”
Her gaze swept across everyone in the room before settling on each face one by one. “The world is vast, and there are countless powerful enemies with abilities we can’t predict. Let this serve as a reminder, never let your guard down.”
Among everyone present, only Rakan remained without an awakened ability, yet his sharp instincts and experience from his past life as a mafia boss made him just as dependable. Despite lacking supernatural powers, his resilience and keen insight allowed him to read the flow of any situation, making him an invaluable member of the team.
This made Kisha think that if Rakan were to awaken an ability, he could easily become one of the core members of her squad, someone on the same level as Vulture and Sparrow. The thought made her consider helping him awaken, much like she did with Aston.
However, unlike Aston, whose loyalty and character she already knew from her previous life, Rakan on the other hand was still an unknown variable. In the past, she might have hesitated to take such a risk, but things were different now.
With the Heart Gu Pill and the Slave Contract at her disposal, both of which she could create without much cost or has a source, hesitation no longer felt necessary.
If she decided to help Rakan awaken, she could simply bind him to her through a Slave Contract, or, if she wished to ensure his obedience more severely, use the Heart Gu Pill.
After all, the demonic insect within the pill served as a perfect deterrent, its slow, excruciating pain a constant reminder of the consequences of betrayal, especially without the medicine that kept the creature dormant inside the human body.
But then, thinking about Rakan’s attitude so far, Kisha couldn’t deny that he had been nothing but dedicated. He worked diligently, followed orders without complaint, and showed no sign of harboring any ill intent toward her or her people.
Still, Kisha had been betrayed before, and that experience taught her that trust was not something easily given. So instead of acting on sentiment, she decided to proceed strategically.
She would let Sparrow and the others accompany Rakan’s subordinates and leave the room later, while she considered her remaining resources. Out of the four remaining Awakening Fruits she had left, two were already reserved for other purposes. That meant only two was available, and she decided that Rakan would be the one to receive one of it.
Letting Rakan awaken first could serve a dual purpose: not only would it test his loyalty when he finally gain power, but it would also send a message to the others. It would show them that loyalty to her came with tangible rewards.
And since Rakan had his own followers, they too would witness what awaited those who chose to stand with her.
With that thought, Kisha nodded to herself, her hesitation fading completely.
“Sparrow, Vulture, and the rest of you,” Kisha began, her tone steady but warm, “I appreciate the great job you’ve done here in Maple Leaf Town. The difficulty of this mission increased drastically, and it nearly cost you your lives.”
“Although this was a mission requested by an outsider, since we are working to build an alliance, we will not demand compensation from them. Instead, I will personally see to it that you all receive the rewards you deserve.”
Her gaze swept across the room, lingering briefly on each of them before she continued.
“For the team leaders and core members, Sparrow, Vulture, Rakan, Clyde, Fred, and Evelyn, you will each receive one piece of Four Season Fabric and one piece of Bredmon Leather.”
“We’ll soon be releasing new uniforms for our warriors and leaders, and these materials will be used to craft special uniforms for you. The Four Season Fabric is woven from a magical thread capable of withstanding elemental attacks. It helps resist elemental forces and extreme environmental conditions.”
“The Bredmon Leather, on the other hand, is made from the hide of the Bredmon Beast, a creature renowned for its thick, durable skin and exceptional defense. This leather offers excellent impact absorption and sound-dampening properties, making it perfect for stealth and protection.”
“We’ll have the tailor-type awakened ability users craft leather boots and protective armor from it as an additional layer of defense, especially for those who have yet to receive any protective gear from me before.”
Kisha’s tone softened slightly as she added, “If you wish, you can also give these materials to your family or trusted friends to enhance their survivability. The world outside is becoming harsher with each passing day, and a little extra protection could mean the difference between life and death.”
Although none of them knew what a Bredmon Beast was or where Kisha had obtained such rare materials, they didn’t dare question her. After all, she had already provided them with exceptional weapons before, each with unique effects, so they knew better than to pry.
Instead, they quietly accepted her generosity, deeply appreciating the lengths she went to in order to improve their chances of survival on the frontlines. To them, this gesture spoke volumes, it showed that Kisha truly valued them. And because of that, their loyalty toward her only grew stronger.
“Thank you, Young Madam!” everyone chorused, bowing deeply to Kisha. Their eyes were filled with reverence, gratitude, and a faint trace of devotion. Kisha could feel their sincerity and knew that it wasn’t just empty words.
