Capítulo 937: Chapter 937 Keith, The Siscon

Meanwhile, the rest of the survivors were working together to pile the zombie carcasses into a mound, ready to be set aflame so the stench and decay wouldn’t endanger the health of the shelter’s people.

Grandma and Grandpa Alden were also busy helping around the shelter, so they didn’t come into the office with Kisha, choosing instead to let their granddaughter to rest there with the others.

They both knew she was exhausted after battling the mutated zombie, with only her husband by her side for support. Grandpa Alden went to the front lines with Keith, helping to collect crystal cores, and from time to time assisted in hauling zombie carcasses to the growing mound that would soon be set ablaze.

Seeing Keith eagerly stuffing crystal core after crystal core into his backpack, Grandpa Alden let out a snort before getting to work himself. He plunged his dagger into a zombie’s skull and pried out the core with practiced hands.

Most of the corpses already had their heads caved in, so half the time he didn’t even need to stab; just a glance was enough to spot the faint gleam of the crystal core amidst the gore.

In a way, it made harvesting easier, but no matter how many times he did it, the sight never sat right with him. His stomach twisted more than once, bile rising to his throat, and the stench of rot clawed at his nose and lungs with every breath.

“Ugh!” Grandpa Alden groaned as he straightened up, tilting his head toward the sky as if that could spare him from the stench of the corpses piled around him. The reek of decay was bad enough, but now it mingled with the acrid bite of burned flesh, making his stomach turn.

Most of the time, he didn’t need to split open skulls with his dagger; their heads were already crushed, but Sparrow’s brutal attacks had left many zombies reduced to little more than minced meat.

Limbs and chunks of flesh littered the ground, and hunting for crystal cores among the mess was no easy task. Some were buried beneath mangled bodies, forcing them to dig through the carnage just to find them.

Hardly a single zombie had an intact body as Grandpa Alden surveyed the field. He silently thanked the heavens that his wife hadn’t come along, though she had wanted to. Instead, he had convinced her to stay behind and help with the children.

Her awakened ability was far more useful there, soothing the little ones shaken by the sudden wave of zombies. Many of the children were still so young, already scarred by the apocalypse, and the latest attack had only deepened their fear.

They cried endlessly, clinging to any sense of safety. In that chaos, Grandma Alden’s presence was a blessing, her gentle touch and power easing their terror in ways no one else could.

While the core members of HOPE Base rested in the leader’s office, others were left with the hardest work, cleaning the battlefield, while another group focused on cooking.

“All fire-type awakened ability users, burn the mound over there!” Grandpa Alden barked, his voice firm despite his weariness. A STAU member soon approached, handing him a mask to make the task easier.

Masks were distributed to everyone working outside, sparing them from the choking stench of decay and the dizziness it brought. The simple precaution immediately improved their efficiency.

Even so, the work was gruesome. Corpses had to be moved, dismantled, and burned, and more than once, zombie blood splattered unexpectedly across their faces. It wasn’t just revolting, it was deadly.

A single drop ingested could turn an ordinary human into one of the monsters they were fighting. Thankfully, the STAUs had acted quickly, distributing masks before such accidents could happen.

“Alright, once the carcasses are burned, water-type awakened ability users wash down the blood and brain matter on the road. Make sure every trace is gone,” Grandpa Alden ordered firmly. With the core members, including his granddaughter, resting, he had taken it upon himself to hold the front line so they could recover without worry.

The others obeyed without hesitation. Having someone take charge made everything smoother, and with Grandpa Alden’s steady hand, the chaos quickly turned organized.

He had years of experience in rescue missions and disaster work, and it showed; he could instantly spot what needed to be done and direct others with confidence.

After two more hours, Grandpa Aldens and the others on the front lines, along with Keith, had already burned hundreds of zombie carcasses.

There were times when they had missed removing the crystal cores from a zombie’s head, so when the corpses were reduced to ashes by the fire-type awakened ability users, the remaining crystal cores would still be visible on the ash pile.

Grandpa Aldens then came up with an idea: why not just burn the entire body at once? Once the zombie carcasses were reduced to ashes, they could simply sift through the ashes to retrieve the crystal cores.

This method would save them from having to dig into each zombie’s head individually, a process that was clearly time-consuming and exhausting. Luckily, with so many fire-type awakened ability users on their side, they had more than enough firepower to burn all the zombie carcasses to ashes efficiently.

And so, they did exactly that, which proved extremely helpful. Everyone outside focused on hurling the zombie carcasses into piles to be burned.

If they had forklifts or other machinery to push the carcasses into one place, their work would have been far more efficient. Unfortunately, no one had anticipated an event like this, so even the usually well-prepared STAUs hadn’t brought any such equipment.

“Sigh.” Grandpa Aldens let out a deep breath. Although they had made everyone’s work a lot easier, he knew it still wasn’t enough. Thousands of zombie carcasses littered the ground, and if they kept hauling them like this, it could take days to finish.

By then, the bodies would rot further, the stench would grow unbearable, and it would surely attract mutated rodents and insects, inviting even more trouble, and possibly triggering an epidemic. They had to deal with it as quickly as possible.

While Grandpa Aldens worried about the situation, Keith had already sent a message to Kisha. After all, this self-proclaimed “siscon” always ran to his sister whenever he hit a problem he couldn’t solve, confident that his oh-so-powerful sister could come up with a better solution.

That was just how he saw her, always capable, always clever.

[Keith: Sister, I think Grandpa and the rest of us have run into a problem at the frontline.]

[Kisha: What is it? Aren’t all the zombies dead? Did the ones that got away come back to attack again?]

[Keith: No, that’s not it.]

[Keith: There are just too many zombie carcasses outside for our current manpower to clear quickly; it could take days. The bodies are already decomposing, and we have a narrow window to burn them before they become a major public-health hazard.]

[Keith: If we don’t act fast, the stench will attract rodents, insects, and mutated animals, like maggots, cockroaches, vultures, ravens, and that will only make things worse. I’m worried that if we leave cleanup to the people of Maple Leaf Town, they could face catastrophic consequences.]

[Kisha: So… what exactly are you saying?]

[Keith: Um… I just wanted to ask if you have a solution. And if not, maybe at least some machinery that could help us speed things up?]

[Kisha: Hmmm…]

[Kisha: I don’t really have a better solution.]

[Keith: (╥﹏╥)]

[Keith: But I do have the machinery to make your work faster and easier…]

[Keith: Yay!!! I knew it! My sister really is the best!!!]

[Kisha: (-‸ლ)]

Sure enough, the moment Keith asked Kisha for help, their problem was bound to be solved. He felt reassured that his faith in her wasn’t misplaced and immediately informed his grandfather, which sparked excitement among everyone.

Not long after, Kisha excused herself briefly, then returned and approached her younger brother and grandfather. Without a word, she waved her hand, and suddenly, trucks and forklifts appeared out of nowhere.

These vehicles weren’t from her personal inventory but from the HOPE Base. With absolute control over the base, she could summon anything or send any item wherever she wanted around the base.

This was the first time she had ventured this far from her base, so she wasn’t sure if it would work, but she decided to give it a try for Keith’s sake. To her delight, it worked perfectly, just as she had hoped.

Seeing it succeed made her so happy, and she realized that in the future, she could easily borrow items from either of her bases whenever she needed.

The people at HOPE Base were all stunned and alarmed when the big trailer trucks, normally used to haul materials for the wall, and numerous forklifts suddenly vanished. Panic spread quickly as many rushed out to report the missing machinery to Aston and the other leaders, since they were unable to locate Kisha or Duke. Fear gripped them; worried they would be blamed for the disappearance, their hearts felt like they might leap right out of their chests.
