Capítulo 931: Chapter 931 Evolved Mutated Zombie

Levi had originally been stationed on the third floor, but with many awakened ability users still recovering their spiritual energy, he had moved down to the wall to fill the gap, ending up right beside Keith.

Their proximity, combined with their closeness in age, made it all too easy for a rivalry to spark. What Levi didn’t realize, however, was that this was the first time he had initiated any sort of interaction with anyone; usually, he preferred to keep to himself.

Maybe it was because Keith was Kisha’s brother that Levi had unconsciously lowered his guard around him. Or perhaps, by provoking Keith on purpose, he was simply trying to keep Keith focused on the zombies ahead so he wouldn’t end up gagging his last meal out of fear.

It could also be that Rakan’s steady leadership had eased some of Levi’s tension, making him less gloomy and defensive than before. Or maybe it was simply because Keith didn’t know about his shameful past, and that ignorance made it easier for Levi to feel at ease around him. Whatever the reason, it was clear that Levi was improving, and that alone was a good thing.

Before long, Keith and Levi had shot down dozens of zombies alongside the others inside the shelter. For a brief ten minutes, the horde seemed to fall into a lull, their movements sluggish, as though they were trapped in a stupor.

But soon, one by one, the creatures began to stir, eyes snapping toward the survivors as the noise of battle reached them. Then, as if triggered all at once, the horde erupted back into motion, zombies charging forward in a frenzied rush.

This time, however, their advance was chaotic. Instead of a single, unified wave, the undead scattered in different directions, their disorganized assault fracturing the once-overwhelming mass.

Oddly enough, this worked to Sparrow’s group’s advantage. With the horde broken into smaller clusters, they could press the attack more effectively. Even better, the number of fresh zombies flooding in was no longer endless as before.

It was a small but vital shift, enough to give Sparrow’s people fresh determination. They dug their heels in, striking harder, bolstered by the thought that most of the horde’s weight had already shifted toward Kisha and Duke’s side of the battlefield.

On Kisha’s side, she fought with everything she had, crushing zombies in quick succession to keep the horde at bay, while Duke faced off against the mutated one. Unlike the weaker undead, this creature had been lurking behind the swarm, revealing not only cunning intelligence but also terrifying strength.

Its hide was thick and scaly, as hard as steel. Duke’s aura-infused strikes barely scratched it. To make matters worse, it moved with the skittering agility of a cockroach, slipping through openings and making it nearly impossible for Duke to corner it.

“Kekeke…” The mutated zombie’s eerie cackle sent a chill down Duke’s spine. Its hideous face twisted into a mockery of a grin, slanted crimson eyes gleaming with malice. Its jagged teeth, like a piranha’s but set in a doglike muzzle, made the creature look even more nightmarish.

“What the hell is this abomination? A crossbreed between a human and a dog?” Duke muttered, his voice laced with disgust. Kisha caught his words, and so did the mutated zombie.

Strangely enough, Duke’s insult seemed to strike deeper than any of their earlier taunts; it triggered a furious reaction.

The creature let out another ear-splitting screech, sharper and more piercing than before. Duke staggered, clutching his head as a wave of dizziness crashed over him. His vision swam, his body swayed, and in that split second of weakness, the zombie lunged. Its long, jagged claws slashed toward his neck.

Luckily, instinct saved him. Duke stumbled back just in time, the claws slicing the air inches from his throat. Gritting his teeth, he shook his head violently, forcing away the fog clouding his mind.

This shriek… it wasn’t like earlier, the ones used to call reinforcements. No—this one attacked his psyche directly. ‘A mental ability?’ Duke realized grimly.

Kisha noticed his struggle. Even while carving her way through the surrounding zombies, her eyes flickered with concern. Step by step, she fought her way closer to Duke, then narrowed her gaze at the abomination. Activating her ‘Eye of Truth’, she locked onto the creature’s status window.

“Hubby! It has mental control, be careful!” Kisha shouted, hurling a wrecked car straight at the abomination to drive it back and buy Duke some breathing room.

Duke immediately shifted into full defensive mode, retreating a step as he steadied himself. Fortunately, he wasn’t entirely vulnerable; he, too, possessed a mental ability, and his formidable ‘Mental Capacity’ gave him a natural defense against another mental type’s attacks.

As long as he actively shielded his psyche, the creature shouldn’t be able to overwhelm him so easily.

Or so he thought.

The mutated zombie’s own ‘Mental Capacity’ was higher than his by nearly three hundred points. That narrow but crucial difference tilted the scales, making the zombie’s psychic pressure heavier and more dangerous than he had anticipated.

“Hubby, step back! That mutated zombie has a strong Mental Capacity.” Kisha called out as she finally closed the distance to Duke, signaling him with a sharp gesture.

Duke gave a brief nod, and without hesitation, they swapped roles. Duke moved to intercept the scattered zombies pouring from alleyways and broken buildings, while Kisha stepped forward to confront the mutated abomination head-on.

Now that she had its status window in full view, Kisha finally understood why her mental assaults hadn’t worked earlier. This creature wasn’t just a brute; it was a mental-type mutated zombie with a body reinforced beyond normal limits. A rare and troublesome combination.

The realization only made its leer more disturbing. Its twisted, mocking expression seemed almost aware of her concern, as if it relished her unease. With its slanted eyes glowing red and its hideous grin splitting wider, Kisha felt her skin crawl.

For the first time, she thought this thing was far more terrifying than any ghost she had ever seen in a horror film.

There was an eerie madness flickering in the mutated zombie’s eyes, the kind that made Kisha think it might once have been a lunatic when it was still human, with scraps of that deranged self still lingering in its undead form. If that were the case, then this fight would be far from simple.

“Duke, cover for me, okay?” Kisha whispered, knowing they had no choice but to work in perfect tandem. Tag-teaming was the only way to bring this creature down. But the steady trickle of ordinary zombies breaking through the streets kept pulling their focus, forcing Duke to split his attention, while the mutated one circled like a predator.

Still, it was better than facing the massive wave of undead that loomed in the distance. Their guttural roars and frenzied growls echoed toward them, announcing their imminent arrival.

Yet instead of panicking, Kisha opened her status window. A faint smile curved her lips. Thanks to the growing swarm drawing near, her stat multiplier had already doubled. And if the horde closed within her radius, without overwhelming her position, her multiplier would skyrocket to x10. At that point, her strength would surge to terrifying heights.

She just needed to stall. For now, she relied on her Aura to hold the mutated zombie at bay, biding her time until her power peaked. She didn’t dare voice her plan aloud; the creature’s mocking eyes were too sharp, too calculating. If it understood, it might flee before she had the chance to crush it.

For now, all Kisha could do was meet its mental assaults head-on with her own ‘Mental Affinity’.
