Capítulo 618: Listing the Evidence

Selina closed her eyes, her smile turning colder.

The Hill and Brooks families—ruined by someone like her.

Her tone was calm, almost detached, but the edge beneath every word could cut glass.

“Mrs. Hill,” she said evenly, “what makes you think my father’s greatest love was you?”

Before Hannah could answer, Selina continued, her voice steady and sharp.

“My parents knew each other since childhood. They were childhood sweethearts. Even after my grandparents died in that ‘accident,’ even when my uncle vanished, even when my mother—because of you and Matt—fell from grace, my father never abandoned her.”

She took a step forward, her gaze unwavering.

“When my mother was forced into Joe’s hands, my father risked everything to rescue her. His mentors, colleagues, and students—all knew this. Every one of his students called my mother ‘Mrs. Brooks.'”

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Several researchers in their thirties nodded fiercely, glaring at Hannah with open disgust.

Selina’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile.

“So, Mrs. Hill, what exactly makes you believe my father loved you?”

Hannah clenched her teeth. “Because—”

“Can’t answer?” Selina tilted her head, almost pitying. “Shall I answer it for you?”

“Selina,” Hannah snapped, her breath uneven. “You—”

“You believe my father loved you,” Selina interrupted coldly, “because you gave him that drug.”

The room went still.

Hannah’s face twisted in horror. “You’re lying!”

Selina ignored her outburst, her tone calm and cutting.

“You really thought that by feeding him that drug, you could make him love you? Love doesn’t come from force. When you tamper with the mind, what you create isn’t love—it’s madness.”

Hannah seemed to latch onto one phrase, shouting, “You said it yourself—love can’t be forced! Curtis loved me! He already did!”

Selina’s expression didn’t change. “Then why, Mrs. Hill,” she said softly, “are you so desperate to convince yourself?”

Hannah’s eyes went bloodshot. “Because he did—he did love me!”

Selina’s gaze sharpened. “Because you saw what that drug could do.”

Her next words struck like lightning. “Amelia.”

A stunned silence fell over the hall.

Everyone turned instinctively toward Logan.

Amelia—the adopted daughter of the Perry family, who had stolen the real daughter’s place, her fiancé, and even claimed the real daughter’s child as her own.

Logan’s so-called “illegitimate son” had been Amelia’s fabrication from the start.

Selina’s tone was soft, almost conversational—but every syllable hit like a hammer.

“People always said the Perry men—Grandpa Perry, Mr. Perry—sided with Amelia because of their own scandals. That they hated Anna, the real daughter, because she reminded them of their mistakes.”

Hannah snapped, “Isn’t that true?!”

Selina let out a quiet, mocking laugh.

“Perhaps. But do you really believe every single person in the Perry family lost their mind? Even after Anna was switched at birth, Grandpa Perry did search for her. He may have been unfaithful, but he never wished for Anna’s death.”

Selina tilted her head slightly, her tone light but her words razor-sharp.

“So tell me—why did Grandpa Perry later want Anna dead? Because he adopted Amelia.”

Her gaze swept across the silent crowd.

“How could an adopted daughter control every decision in the Perry family?”

She paused just long enough for the tension to tighten.

“Because after Amelia was adopted… she fed the entire Perry family that same drug.”

Her voice lowered, cold and deliberate.

“Mrs. Hill, do you know what kind of drug that is?”

Hannah’s jaw clenched. “How would I know? What does that have to do with me?!”

Selina raised a brow, almost amused. “Nothing to do with you? All right then—let’s look at another example.”

At that, Hannah’s heart skipped a beat. Something felt wrong. She tried to cut her off, but Selina was faster—

“That example,” she said softly, “is your grandfather Hill.”

A murmur rippled through the room. Everyone knew that name—lately, it had been on every tongue.

Great-Grandfather Hill had once adopted the son of his late chauffeur, giving him the Hill surname. That boy was Matt.

Matt, a good-for-nothing playboy, had never shown interest in the family business. Yet after adopting Hannah, he suddenly began scheming for control of the Hill estate—even plotting against Charles and his wife.

People had always whispered that Hannah was cunning, manipulative, dangerous—but that wasn’t the real point.

The real point was—Great-Grandfather Hill supported Matt.

Matt? A wastrel, a failure, a man with no talent, no discipline—how could he be the heir to Hill Enterprises?

Charles, on the other hand, was his biological son—educated, capable, the true successor.

But Matt wanted the Hill fortune, and somehow, Great-Grandfather Hill gave it to him. He even scolded Charles, forcing him to relinquish his inheritance. When Charles refused, his own father tried to throw him out.

Did that make any sense?

Selina’s lips curved into a slow, cutting smile.

“So tell me,” she said softly, “why did Great-Grandfather Hill turn on his own son? Why did he favor a useless foster son instead?”

Her gaze slid toward Hannah. “Mrs. Hill, do you know why?”

Hannah’s whole body trembled. Her jaw locked tight, but she forced the words out. “I don’t know! I told you—this has nothing to do with me!”

Someone in the crowd scoffed. “Oh really? So the Perry family has nothing to do with you, and neither does the Hill family?”

Voices began to rise one after another.

“After the Perry family adopted Amelia, they all went insane—it’s just like what happened to the Hills!”

“Exactly! I could never understand it. Charles was clearly the better heir in every way, yet from a certain point on, Great-Grandfather Hill despised his own son and adored that foster boy. It was madness!”

“And that turning point,” another voice added darkly, “was right after Hannah was adopted.”

“I heard,” someone else muttered, “that Matt hadn’t even planned to adopt Hannah—he was supposed to take in someone else. But somehow, Hannah was the one who showed up at Hill Manor. And before that, she’d already approached several other powerful families. What was she really after?”

Hannah’s breathing quickened as the whispers grew sharper. She clenched her fists.

“Selina,” she hissed, “I only spoke up because I couldn’t stand to see you force Curtis together with a woman he didn’t love! Why twist the story and bring up nonsense?”

Selina’s smile was serene, almost sweet.

“I’m not twisting anything, Mrs. Hill. Since you asked, I’ll answer directly.”

Her voice rang out clear and steady:

“You’re so certain my father loved you because you drugged him.”

She paused. The silence in the hall was deafening.

“And Great-Grandfather Hill, and the entire Perry family—they all lost their minds… because of that same drug.”
